heyoooo. i'm pretty new to this site, and since i started rping here, i've gotten more into finding face claims for my ocs. i never used to use face claims, because i have really specific ideas about my characters in my head, so as an artist i've always drawn them out and been happy with that.
but, i was wondering if y'all have any resources to help find face claims?
its been a bit tricky for me since i'm so particular. i've found some tumblr resource blogs that are dedicated to helping you find face claims, but other than that, its been difficult for me. anybody got any tips for that?

So I personally like to use the websites below because the works are either in the public domain (free to use for whatever without permission) or the creators have given full permission for their work to be used (typically as long as you link back).

I usually look on pinterest, instagram, but my favorite is of course Tumblr. On Tumblr probably the best site to look at least I find is Pepperminstranger. She is pretty much a godsend for finding faceclaims. If you search on pinterest or google maybe searching the eye color, hair color would be a good start. Also tip if they have similar face shapes it will be easier to make it seem like the characters are related^^

rae2nerdy rae2nerdy those are helpful, thank you!
monxmiracle monxmiracle thanks for linking that tumblr, that's really helpful ! but yeah, i usually try through actors and models from shows/movies/media i'm familiar with. google search is the least helpful for me :c

I myself use pinterest or google images. Face claims are definitely hard, especially since I like to write out what the character looks like before I even look at one. Though they aren't really a neccessary as long as you can write out a description of your character.

Wow, that's a really good idea. I knew that site existed but I never thought to use it for face claims. Thanks, I'll probably be using it now.

for google search the tip I got is to go by genetics. Like if you have an idea what the parents look like, figure out the genetics, first then decide the child. Like for example. If you have a child with parents with blonde hair blue eyes, and other brown hair, green eyes. Since the allele for brown hair and green eyes is more dominant itโ€™s more likely that the child would have those traits. So then what would you do with that is, pop it into the google search engine. Or pinterest like so, where you specify what the gender is, hair color, and eye color is. This method is kinda tedious. But it works, you just have to do a lot of scrolling and backsearching to find the names of the person and so forth.

Pinterest is the best option, surprised that no one's listed it here. Sure it has cursed, weird ass images but you can find anything. From grunge anime OCs to realistic fantasy drawings to vanilla shonen style characters to photo-realistic stuff and more. Plus it's "related" feature is elite. Search up something like "Old anime lady" and find a photo that's close but not exact? Np, related images gives you 100+ images with very similar tags to the "close" image you found.

Also a suggestion, find images first instead of making the character and then finding an image. Just search around and get inspired from the pictures. That'll save you a lot in headaches and time wrapped up in FC hunting.

Pinterest is great for finding pictures and I love it. It's horrible in terms of artist credit and IP though. XD

For a lot of people finding an FC first and making a character around it works, but I just can't work like that personally. If I try, it never works out. I need to have mental image first and then find something that fits. It takes much longer but working from a picture just doesn't get the juices flowing.

About photographic face claims: I wish more people put a bit more effort into searching for something interesting than the same pouting model face 18-22 year old beautiful white person. Because when I see a line up like that in an rp I just assume the rp will be as boring as the fc choices. :/

For face claims that use actual photos of people, you can google "face claim database" or the like, and you can find sites where you can apply filters to find people (usually models, actors, and celebrities so it's not weird) matching your description. For example, you can narrow it down by gender, age group, race, hair length, hair color, etc... If I'm forced to find a fc, that's usually what I do!

This isn't answering the question, it's just technically related, but I'd advise against using Pinterest and Google images for art faceclaims, like anime ones. The ones that end up on there are usually reposts that have no credit attached to them, and additionally a lot of artists don't allow people to use or repost their work at all so it's always good to get it from the original source so you can see what their stance on people using it is. (Should be fine for regular faceclaims though.)

Photographs are also intellectual property of the photographer. The same moral stance should apply to both or neither.

Yeah I would say Pinterest is only good if you donโ€™t post the image itself but use it as an inspiration for a description. I do that a lot when coming up with magical creatures.

Google images is fine as you should be able to click on the image and go to its original source. And just check if itโ€™s copyrighted or the creator is credited somewhere.

I do agree with Crayons Crayons if your going to worry about proper credit for one type of faceclaim you should properly credit both. Itโ€™s why I shared the sites I did all of them flat out say everything on them can be used. The real image site even gives you the photo credit when you download.

That's true, bad wording on my part. You should credit anyone's work regardless, but I don't usually run into as much trouble sourcing photography for whatever reason (I guess they don't get reposted as much as art does??)

I try to credit the original artists if I'm forced to use a visual faceclaim and (if the RP seems to be one that's going to last) will then commission an artist to do a rendering of my character so I'm not stealing someone's IP. I'm a bit leery of photo faceclaims as they feel a little...invasive to me (just feels wrong to use a literal person and insert some other character into their face) which is another reason I'll jump really quickly into commissioning art as soon as I'm able.

That said, for the temporary face claims or inspiration for artists to use when drawing my characters, I tend to like Pinterest. It takes a bit of digging but once you find an image you like it isn't usually too hard to find the original artist and credit them. As mentioned the "related images" feature for Pinterest is fantastic. I'll find an image with the right hair colour/eye colour but wrong face shape and then slowly narrow it down through the "related image" function until I land on a perfect (or near perfect) faceclaim.

I usually draw on photoshop, but since my computer sorta died, I use
It has a nifty search where you can sort out by hair, eye color, age, etc. Pretty good if you ask me. Nice community too.
As for real, just google it, and for fine tunes I use that face app on my phone, you know, the one where you give your face and info to the Russians (just kidding... Or am I?)

Precisely because of the copyright concerns outlined in this thread I'm on a few sites where only signed celebrities are allowed for face claims.

I use Pinterest for real-life photography and then try to describe from there. I mostly use it as reference.
