HUMANS
Boldic humans
Supposedly one of the original races in the world. Some say they are descended from troglodytes that just decided to get some sun. Due to a series of genocidal human-led military exploits that took place during and after the Magicide, there are a great many times fewer faends in the world today than there were in the long-lost age of the Old Kingdom. Faends are treated with disdain by much of humanity on the basis of their religion, which despises magick and all those races sourced from it. Most human societies treat faends as second-class citizens at best, and vermin at the worst.
GNOMES
Small creatures with a humanlike appearance. They are quite industrious for their size. They are usually treated as a subspecies of human, rather than as a faend; the killing of a gnome is usually treated the same as killing a man. Their tiny (always below five feet) stature precludes them from fighting, and thus from achieving any great rank in human feudal society. Still, gnomes are capable farmers and craftsmen, usually living in villages of their own in the borderlands between Old Kingdom ruins and human societies.
SORCERAI
Sorcerai are those humans and created faends who are imbued with mana, or true magick. It grants them blue, glowing eyes, as well the ability to live forever, unless killed - though their appearances still wither over time. Their blood can be used in rituals to communicate with the gods of creation and destruction, bringing divine interferences into the corporal plane, but at the cost of a sacrifice - often a steep one. They are responsible for the creation of Faends, using the life forces of humans and other mundane creatures in order to sire strange new species into existence. Close to half of the Sorcerai were Faends by the time of the Schism in the Old Kingdom, where magick wreaked havoc on the world.
BEARDLINGS
A hunchbacked race of a mountain and tundra-dwelling humanoids, of which both sexes possess long, blonde-white beards and pronounced ears. They quarry stone and make their villages from it, and make use of basic metals. They are usually friendly and non-hostile towards humans, though they are occasionally driven away due to their strange appearances, despite their benign nature.
HOBLINS
Crooked-toothed and curly-eared humanoids that usually stand below five feet in height. They were created in the Old Kingdom as a servile caste, also serving as a magickal transformation-based punishment. Not much is known about the original hoblins, since today they are all now descended from themselves - though occasionally sired in human women. They are reviled by humanity (and others) as being crude, thieving, and fickle. They are not particularly intelligent, as their wits were intentionally dulled by their creatorlords, but despite this and their lack of great size, they are still fierce, feel little pain, and still possess a low....... cunning .......... IMPS
A long-eared, sorceror-created pet race of the Old Kingdom. Usually, they served as entertainers and artisans. Most are little more than five feet in height, though some subspecies are taller. Many imps were candidates for both sacrifice, as well as being imbued with magic. Many look the part of humans if they wear a cowl, but strange eye and hair colours can often give them away. They are viewed with suspicion in many human areas, especially due to their association with sorcerous rituals. Like almost all faends, they run the risk of being lynched when in the lands of Paragon Emmortal, but they are generally tolerated due to their human-like appearances. Still, they do not have the rights of men.
TROGS
Called troglodytes by scholars, these cave-dwelling humanoids possess pale skin and red eyes. They have an inclination towards cannibalism, effigy construction, and forming small cavern communities. Some trog warriors consume hallucinogen funguses to send themselves into bloodthirsting frenzies. A subspecies known as 'deep trogs' are doubly vicious, not to mention razor-toothed. The reason for their creation is unknown - some say that trogs are the forerunners of men, others say they are completely inhuman. Either way, trogs appear to predate the Old Kingdom.
SCAMPS
Hairy, goat-like creatures, similar in size to a human. They were created in the Old Kingdom to toil as serfs. Scamps, being mostly benign humanoids, are generally left alone by humans. Still, they are forced to eke out a living in dangerous and less fertile lands, nearly all of them still living as peasants to this day.
SCHISM-SCARRED
These poor souls have been affected by fell magicks, which were unleashed upon the world long ago during the Schism in the Old Kingdom. Destructive and life-warping rituals were deployed in great numbers; thousands of captives were needed to grant the necessary sacrificial energies. As if summoning death itself, the vile sorceror-lords of the Old Kingdom brought cataclysm, rendering great swaths of land uninhabitable, and horribly mutating many forms of life. Humans, beasts, and faends alike have been scarred during the Schism, and their suffering has carried on down the generations.
GREENCHANGED
A variety of schism-scarred folk, found on the coasts of Old Kingdom ruins where otherworldly algae began to accumulate after the Schism. It was nutritious enough to eat to survive, when most other plants and beasts were gone. Over the years, those forced to subsist on it had their skin turn green, and their eyes usually turn orange. The specifics of the transformation are not well-known, but it turns the blood and organ a yellow-green as well. Greenchanged are not trusted in most human settlements, mistaken for being contagious.
MANED DEVILS
Large, strong, horned faends, standing from six to seven feet tall. They are native to Argwreath, having been created by the local sorceror-lords there as servants for manual labour, as well as military retainers. Their true name can only be pronounced among themselves, and their ferocity in battle has earned them their moniker. Not all of them actually have manes, but the few maneless devils are generally doomed to become outcasts. Their horns are always growing, to the point of becoming a nuisance when it comes to doorways.
DRYADS
Forest wardens of a forgotten age, attacking anyone who is not a true Sorcerai (i.e. almost nobody) found dwelling in their sacred groves. They hunt only what beasts they need to survive, and are masters of stealth. Some are said to utilise wooden bows and spears, but many prefer their teeth, horns, claws and other natural implements.
SWAMP CREEPS
Slimy, red-eyed, greenskinned monsters that inhabit swamps and bogs. They feed on meat, fish, and fungus, and either flee or attack when approached. Some of them sprout strange, almost insectoid-appearing tendrils. Most species are hairless.
GREMLINS
A race of shrewd mechanists, standing on the short side, around five feet tall at most. Gremlins were created to oversee machines, levers, drawbridges, etc. and serve as custodians. They can go for long periods without food or drink, and most are ambidextrous. Other gremlins were specialized in espionage and destruction of enemy infrastructure. With the fall of the Old Kingdom, most have been left to become craftsmen, or if they're lucky, engineers in settlements made up of other Faends or tolerant Aedoran humans.
GLAVELINGS
A race of cunning insectoid monstrosities. Their fleshnests are ruled by hermaphroditic queens that will turn anything with a heartbeat into their living egg-sacks and food for their nymphs and grubs. They dig and slice with their wicked, serrated arms.
