Thor From IT
Imprisoned Sage
I'm a world builder looking to give my most recent project a test run. My goal for this world was to create a more involved super hero universe. That is, one that focuses on the average people just as much as the heroes beyond "boo-hoo, super powered people tore up my city". The rules which govern the Gifted are pretty set so that I can prevent the rise of SuperMans/Immortals/Indestructibles/etc., but still loose enough to provide for silly super antics when they are warranted. I'm looking for one or two players wishing to just play the world and explore it. You'll be starting from square one in a scenario where you've just received your gift and you'll have a totally blank slate to go from. Good or evil or somewhere in between, you are totally free to do as you please. I've got a list of about 40 Gifts and their descriptions and foils already, and you can feel free to provide your own ideas.
Oh, and it takes place in 1995.
Here's the prompt so you can decide if you're interested.
Your whole life until this day has been normal, generally speaking. You work, you learn, you eat, you sleep, and you live like most people around you. To the rest of the world you are one grey speck in a vast plane of television static. There are some, though, who are not dust particles like you. “The Gifted,” or “Greater Beings” or “Enhanced Individuals,” or any of the hundreds of other names they have been given. They are people who manifest extraordinary abilities and are forcefully exempted from normalcy. These individuals have proven to be some of the greatest and most vile human beings to ever exist. Their fates have empowered them to selflessly give everything they have at little cost, or to live out their most twisted, wicked desires without hesitation or consequence. Their existence has been an issue of massive controversy since their first manifestations in the early 1960s.
Right now, though, those things don’t weigh much on your mind. Today is Saturday, November 4, 1995. The air outside is crisp and cool. Your walk to the local brick-and-mortar coffee shop was festively adorned with swirling fallen leaves, the idle chatter of retail workers on smoke breaks, and the smell of hot cocoa firmly gripped in the hands of children trailing their parents in the strip mall. Now you sit in the quaint little shop, taking in the pungent aroma of coffee and the hint of sweet, earthy tobacco which once filled the shelves of this store. The dark green walls and light wood floors make the air itself feel more homely. Chairs surround the tiny tables, always comfortable and adorned with the decorative cushions and coverings which reflect the Turkish heritage of the owners.
“Welcome!” Says the woman behind the counter in a thick accent as the bell announces yet another visitor. You look up, expecting the friends that promised to meet you here, but it is only a tall man in a worn EMT jacket. His nose blushes red from the cold, and his hands rub dryly together as he takes in the heat and replies,“You can smell this place from two blocks down, Sybil! Never fails to pull me in after a long night.” Their interaction continues, but fails to keep your attention. A few moments pass and give way to the choral refrain: “everybody wants to rule the world” playing on the cassette deck behind the dark countertop. Suddenly, the barista and several other patrons in the shop shriek and yell. You immediately see the disturbance through the large front window. A young man, certainly no older than 18, walks towards a small sedan with glowing blue eyes.
“Do you want me now, you bitch?!” He yells loud enough to be heard from inside. “Am I good enough for you now?!” His eyes glow brighter, and two beams of blue light explode toward the rear left tire, then the right, burning and popping them both instantly. The smell of ozone and burning rubber fills the street. You can see where the beams have left blue glowing singes in the asphalt. “Now I have powers too! Just like you wanted!” From a nearby alley, another young man runs towards the first.
“Stop!” He yells. “Leave her alone!” The first teen turns and, without hesitation, lets loose his Gift once more. In a fraction of a second the would-be hero is on the ground, screaming in agony, clutching the leg newly emblazoned with a cauterized hole and the same bluish glow. As he goes down, a young woman opens the door of the car and stumbles to the ground. The assailant spins back around to see her, and smiles wickedly. “Finally” He growls through gritted teeth. “Now you’ll know how I feel.”
As all of this happens before your eyes, you begin to feel a strange warmth inside of you. Something like you’ve never felt before. It seems to electrify every nerve in your body and give you a sense of ecstacy unlike anything else in your life. You feel strangely empowered. Larger than life. Something greater than you have ever been before. This is the beginning of your story.
