    drinking the worries away

“Uncle Kris! Uncle Kris!”

Kristian had just finished tying his tie when his nephews burst in, dressed almost to the nines themselves.
“Hey, squirts, where are your pants?”
he joked, crouching down to embrace them. With a mighty
“Raaaaah!”
he stood, effectively throwing his nephews over his shoulders while they kicked their legs and laughed.

“Are you boys interrupting poor Kristian?” His older sister, Sigrid, leaned against the doorframe, looking dazzling in an elegant red gown that just about matched Kris’s suit. Which made sense, since he would have both his sisters on his arms as the Pedersens entered Central Hall tonight.

Sigrid inclined her head out the door, and as soon as Kris set his nephews down, they ran out giggling, presumably to find their pants. She made her way over to him, straightening the tie and smoothing the fronts of his vest. “Nervous about tonight?”

“Why would I be? It’s just a party celebrating my future marriage to a woman I still haven’t met.”
Kris tugged at his shirt collar, feeling a bit warm.
“At least it’s for all the nobles and not just me.”

“I’m sorry, Kris. You shouldn’t have to do this.” She sighed and tugged gently at his long blond curls, the same color as her own. “We got to marry whoever we wanted, but you…”

“I told you it’s fine. At least this way, I’ll know for sure it’s not for my looks or my money.”
He kissed his sister’s forehead and then rested his own against her, smiling at her reassuringly.
“I didn’t have to do any thinking at all.”

“Oh yes, we both know how you hate that,” she said teasingly. He clicked his tongue and grabbed his jacket to follow her out the door. But thanks to her, he was a lot more at ease about tonight.

- - -

So it turned out Kristian had no idea how to act at an engagement party. He had no problems with Walten and quite liked the city and the noble family’s estates here. But the moment he’d walked into Central Hall, full to the brim with nobles and noble cousins and nobles adjacent and citizens of the city, well—there was no way to describe it. The phrase that kept going through his mind was What the fuck? but he knew his father well enough to know that if he said that at any point aloud tonight, he’d be reprimanded. That would surely dampen his mood.

Although he had a general sense of what his fiancée looked like, thanks to a description given to him, there were uh. There were a lot of women with red hair in this place. And he wasn’t about to ask someone random to dance with him. So here he was, stuck on the edge of a dancefloor, watching other people enjoy themselves and dance. Including his nephews! Well. At least they were having fun. Honestly, it was more fun watching them dance than to do it himself. It had always been that way to him. If he couldn’t have a live he’d chosen for himself, at least they could. That was good enough.

Yeah. He was a horrible liar.

“Another one, please,”
he said, tapping the bar. The presence of alcohol was at least taking the edge off here, and wasn’t that refreshing. As he took a sip of his second glass of the night, he wondered if he’d run into anyone he knew at all. Would he even have the chance to see his fiancée tonight, even though this party was supposed to be celebrating the engagement?

Kalila.

    bored & awkward

“Dad, do I really have to go to this thing?”
Kalila whined, sticking out her bottom lip as far as it would go.
“It’s not like this engagement party is for me.”

“It’s good for networking, my love,” her father said, purposefully ignoring his daughter’s pout by leaning into the mirror to straighten his tie. “Besides, who says you won’t have a party like this of your own soon?” He sent her a teasing smile, and Kalila rolled her eyes.

“Baba, please. I stay inside and watch anime all day. No one in their right mind would want that.”
And as far as she knew, that was true.

“That’s why they call it wishful thinking.” Nasir sighed and turned around, the corners of his eyes crinkling as he took in the sight of his daughter’s outfit for the night. “Absolutely beautiful, habibi.” He paused. “Just like your mother.”

“That’s our cue to leave, baba.”
Kalila held out her arm for her mother, trying to not let her eyes mist over too much.
“Before we cry too much.”

“Excellent idea, Kalila.” He patted her hand on his arm, leading the way out of their lovely home. A home that hadn’t yet expected Kalila to get married, and that she hoped never would.

- - -

It didn’t matter how many of these functions she went to—Kalila never got used to the atmosphere. A drink in her hand didn’t change that, mostly because she still hadn’t gotten used to the taste of alcohol.

She hadn’t liked the idea that her father thought a party like this would be thrown in her honor someday. Hopefully that didn’t mean she was also going to be hitched to some stranger, not that she could entirely fault the nobles at this party for making such agreements. If she was tasked with the protection of Waldovia and had those magical powers or whatever, she’d probably be forced to do plenty of things she didn’t want to. Like, for instance, attend this stupid party.

Sighing, Kalila checked her phone. Supposedly, her friend Alara was going to be here tonight, and at least that would mean one more person more suited to the indoors would be having a not-so-fun time. She hadn’t looked into two many details on all these engagements this party was supposed to celebrate, but she had to admit some curiosity to whoever Alara’s fiancé was. Not enough to go actively looking for him, but if Alara offered to introduce her, she wouldn’t say no. Networking, right, baba?

The good thing about a party like this was that she was unlikely to run into him. Of all the places in Walten, this was the least likely spot to run into him. Except for maybe her house, but even then, she was sure he was bound to turn up at some point. Kalila kept a close eye on her clutch, just in case. The last thing she needed tonight was for something of hers to disappear. Again.

Swirling the drink in her glass, she downed it in one gulp. Oy, yuck. But at least she now had that burning through her body while she waited for something to happen. Oof. Okay, maybe she should go sit down…

    OMG I LOVE THIS SONG

Walker was very put out by the lack of surfing at this party. He wasn’t sure why he’d been expecting the party to be held near a beach, rather than in the middle of a city, especially since he was wearing a suit and all, but a guy could dream, couldn’t he? If this party was supposed to celebrate him getting married, why weren’t there waves for him to surf? He couldn’t help it if he was bummed he wouldn’t have the chance to rip off this stuffy thing and go ride the waves.

“Chin up, Wally,” his sister Cordelia said, nudging his side with her elbow. She looked every bit a princess tonight, and Wally was just thankful that this party wasn’t for her. If it was up to him, she would never get married—at least, not like this. But also just never. She was always gonna be a baby in his eyes! “We can go surfing tomorrow.”

“I guess,”
he mumbled, still pouting. For a waterlogged man like him, he needed the surf more than he needed human interaction, and he needed that, too. The least they could have done was provide some sort of fish tank for him to look at! C’mon, did they know nothing about the families attending this thing tonight?

Not that he had room to talk, really, considering he’d forgotten his fiancée’s name shortly after learning it.

Embarrassing, of course, but in his defense, he’d had a really good surfing session right after that meeting with his mother, and then… yeah, he didn’t remember much besides the surfing. Killer waves!
“You remember her name, right?”
he whispered out of the corner of his mouth, not wanting anybody else to catch on that he had been a complete doofus about tonight’s festivities.

“Mom never told me. Wally, are you seriously not sure who in this room you’re supposed to marry?” Cordelia didn’t exactly keep her voice down, and Wally slapped a hand over her mouth, his eyes wide as they darted around. Then he winced as his sister bit his finger, shaking out his hand. Before he could say anything, she crossed her arms. “Do you at least know what she looks like?”

“I don’t think anyone here was given a picture. Apparently nobles are all supposed to immediately know each other—but I don’t think that works.”
Wally cradled his bitten hand against his chest as he gazed out over the crowd.

He was totally focused on trying to figure out who his fiancée was when his favorite song came on. Letting out a dramatically loud gasp, Wally ignored his sister’s attempts to stop him and sprinted to the dance floor, already busting a move to rival any professional dancer. Why, yes, Waldovia, this was the heir to the Ridges family name. And he was doing the nae-nae like nobody’s business.

Camellia.

    open mouth, insert foot

“Oh, Leon, this is so exciting!”
Camellia twirled around her small bedroom in the dress she’d gotten for this occasion.
“I’m so glad Lorelei asked me to come with her! Do I look okay?”
She turned to her chameleon friend, sitting on the edge of her bed. His head tilted, his eyes going in two different directions before his tongue lolled out. Cami knew that was a sign of Leon’s approval, and she hopped over and leaned down to give his little head a kiss. If chameleons could blush, she knew Leon would be doing so.

“Oh no, I’m almost late!”
Cami’s eyes widened as she checked the clock, grabbing her bag and slinging it over her shoulder.
“I’ll be back late, Leon! Look after things for me!”

The chameleon lifted his tail in farewell, and as Cami turned away, she left behind an empty bedroom, completely unaware that her entire conversation was all in her head.

- - -

“It’s all so beautiful!”
Cami marveled at the Central Hall’s ballroom in all its decadence and splendor. She felt a bit small compared to the high-vaulted ceilings and chandeliers, but then, she was small, comparatively. Honestly, it made her want to smile—so she did!

“Thank you for inviting me along,”
she said to Lorelei, giving her the smile that was reserved for the savior who had taken her in. After her trials, Lorelei had extended the kindest hand to her, and even now, the list of what to repay her for grew. Not that Cami minded—if it took her entire lifetime, she would someday return the kindness given to her in full. It was the least she could do, after Lorelei had given her so much.

Her stomach rumbled a bit underneath the fabric of her dress, and Cami blushed.
“Should we check out the food?”
she suggested, keeping to the edges of the ballroom as best as she could. Although she was a bit more social now that she’d become acclimated to life in Walten, she sometimes still returned to the days when she wasn’t sure how exactly to interact with other people. And, well, she didn’t know any of the dances currently being performed on the dancefloor. It was probably better she didn’t try, in case she crashed into anyone and caused a scene.

The spread on the buffet table was exquisite, and Cami felt her mouth watering as she took in all the choices. For now, she settled for a few crackers to settle her stomach, turning back to Lorelei.
“So… do you know what he looks like? Your fiancé?”
Though she’d heard about the reason for this party—six engagements!—she had been too busy working to ask much more about everything. Plus, wasn’t it a bit rude to ask your employer about her upcoming arranged nuptials? It was a lot simpler to ask Lorelei about it. Her eyes widened as she realized that it was probably rude to ask her, too!
“Oh, um, you don’t have to talk about it, if you don’t want to… Sorry.”

Munching her cracker, subdued, Cami cast her gaze back to the dancefloor, spotting a door leading out to some gardens across the room. Nature was so much simpler than these engagement parties.

    fuck me

Sergio could have been doing all sorts of things tonight. Attending a deal, shooting someone, finding a woman to take home, drinking, literally anything. But no. Instead, he was here, at fucking Central Hall, at his fucking engagement party. Supposedly celebrating his motherfucking engagement to Chiara Accardi.

Fuck that.

He’d stepped out almost immediately for a smoke. This was about his fourth cigarette, and he still hadn’t calmed down. Fuck fuck fuck. On the bright side, her family was like his, so he didn’t need to worry about indoctrinating anyone into his mobster ways. On the not-so-bright side, he was pretty sure he was going to strangle her before their wedding day. They’d barely talked and he was already livid by the looks she gave him. There was no other word to describe it: fuck. He was in deep shit, and not the kind he could shoot his way out of.

Well…

No. His mother would kill him.

His sigh released a cloud of smoke into the night air. Sergio couldn’t believe he’d put on a suit for this nonsense. No, he didn’t want to dance. If there was anything he was going to do in there tonight, it was drink. A lot. And only because it would probably be frowned upon if he tried to flirt with anyone at his own damn engagement party. What a snoozefest that was. Sure, he could probably flirt with his fiancée, but that probably wasn’t going to end well for his ego.

Man, he really was fucked.

Dropping the cigarette to the ground, Sergio stomped it out, shoving his hands into his pockets. To stay out here where it was slightly cold, or to go inside, where it was way too warm. Decisions, decisions. Maybe he should just leave. Yeah, that might be the strategy here. Feign sickness or some shit. God, but he did want a drink…but he ran the risk of running into Chiara.

Yeah, he was just going to stay here. Much safer that way.

Magdalene.

    anxious & bored

“Remember those walls I built? Well baby they’re tumblin’ down…”
Magdalene’s voice drifted through the ballroom, loud enough for the partygoers to hear, but not enough to draw attention. Just the way she liked it. She preferred crooning to singing pop songs, although she guilty of humming such melodies to herself when she was at home. Tonight, however, she was supposed to prove her talent to all of Walten, including the noble families.

She considered herself lucky that she was not one of them. Considering her general distrust of people that weren’t her adoptive family or her best friend, she wasn’t sure how she would have been able to handle an arranged marriage. And she knew for a fact that after what happened with her ex, the Moores wouldn’t do something like that to her. At least, she was pretty sure.

This was the last song of her set, and she would probably be asked to do another before the night was out. When Maggie finished the song, she dipped into a curtsy before leaving the stage. She desperately needed water; she was parched after some of those higher notes. Luckily, there was a water bottle for her backstage, and she grabbed and went out onto the dancefloor.

It really was very crowded in here, but she supposed that made sense, considering it was an engagement party, and all of Walten had been invited. Nevertheless, Maggie stuck to the wall, sipping her water, trying to keep out of everyone’s way. She was fairly sure Ella was here, but she didn’t know if she could stomach slipping through the crowd to find her and ask how she did. Her brother was also here, but he was probably busy attending to the noble he worked for… Noah? Yeah, that was his name.

She sighed. If only Damian was here. Maggie took out her phone and typed out a text: Just finished my set! For a moment, she nearly typed something silly like “I miss you” or “I wish you were here.” But that would be too clingy, right? Right. So she left it at that and tried to ignore the pang in her chest.

Adjusting her dress, she regretted that she hadn’t chosen a darker color. She probably looked silly, a commoner playing princess, even though she was just here to sing. What she wouldn’t give to be at home, curled up on her couch and watching a movie. Hell, she’d even prefer the company of horses to this, and she was terrified of the creatures. But she knew that was just anxiety talking. For the most part.

Maggie checked the time on her phone and groaned. It would be at least two hours before she was asked to sing again. How the heck was she going to pass that time?

best of you

Adjusting the black vest over his burgundy dress shirt, Kit took a look around the filled ball room with a focused eye. Tonight of all nights, despite it being a joint engagement party, he was ready to get to work. There was never a wrong time for networking, after all. Dressed to impress and to match his partner, the night was young and while of course, he and Ella were here to work, they could also afford to have some fun.

It was a party after all! And who was he to deny himself the enjoyment of dressing fancy and indulging in a selection of overpriced delicacies?

Kit Alexander was many things, but a fool was not one of them.

“Are you ready for tonight?”
he asked, turning his body slightly so he was facing his partner, Ella. They had both been invited to the event, even if it had been for different reasons, similar though they may be.

Although, it’s not like either of them wouldn’t have included the other as their plus one if somehow only one of them had been invited. Despite their own separate - and successful - careers, Kit and Ella were a team. They worked well together and were well known for their collaborations, so he doubted anyone else here would be surprised to see them tonight. A lack of coming from a noble or wealthy family wasn’t enough to stop them.

“Here, give me your phone.”
he murmured, holding his hand out as they approached the doors to the hall.
“Never too early to start documenting the evening.”
he grinned, shooting her a wink.
“Ladies first, of course.”

If she could be doing anything else at this moment than being ushered into the great hall for her engagement party, then you can be sure that Chiara would jump at the chance. Surely there was someone her father needed shot? She even had her gun on her already! If someone dared to insinuate that the Chiara Accardi couldn’t handle something as simple as an assassination in heels and a dress, then they better hide.

Her gun had been cold for a little too long.

At the thought, she could feel the cool metal of her gun against her inner thighs as it shifted in its holder as she walked. Despite the high slit on the one side of her dress, Chiara would never sacrifice her ability to be armed. She was a clever young woman and knew how to make her clothes work for her. Not to mention that a gun didn’t need to be large to be deadly. Her small handgun was tucked high on her inner thigh, ready should she need such a thing. She was an Accardi, and an Accardi was always prepared.

Turning her head slowly, she took a sip from her glass of wine as she scanned the room, taking in what other families had arrived. And no, she was definitely not looking for her…fiancée. Ugh, just thinking the word made her want to shudder. She already knew the bane of her existence would be attending without a doubt. Just like herself, Sergio had no choice in this matter, and wouldn’t risk his position by refusing to attend this stupid party.

God, she hated how sure she felt about his motives.

Chiara recognized a few people she knew personally, feeling a brow arch at the surprise appearance of some. There were a few who she vaguely recognized as business partner’s and plenty were flat out considered beneath her notice.

She wanted to sigh at the potential lack of entertainment for the evening.

However…speak of the devil and he shall appear. Huffing softly around the rim of her glass, the dark haired woman rolled her eyes as she tracked the movement of her fiancée as he made his way out to a balcony, no doubt to escape the crowded hall. And only moments later, there was the faithful dog trotting along after.

She smirked, finally something interesting. She’d give the two a moment, let them bitch and moan even though they claimed that they did no such thing. The thought made her want to laugh. Men. Such stupid creatures. She’d enjoy crashing their little get together in a few minutes.

“Hope you’re ready to play boys…”

Standing around being watched by his parents like he was a toddler was…not how Jian had wanted to spend his evening. Even being at this party was something he hadn’t wanted to do, but needs must and appearances are important. At least, to his parents they are. Jian himself couldn’t particularly care much about what the other Waldovian elites thought of him and this whole sham arrangement, but no one cared much about what he thought.

Which was fine. He could handle the expectations that came with being the son of Wu Haitao.

That was a lie, he was definitely struggling, but he couldn’t admit such a thing. His grip on the glass he was holding tightened as he struggled to keep the strain of being overworked and overwhelmed off his face. This was just like any other social event. He had an image to maintain and nothing could be allowed to distract him from what his job was here tonight.

His mother was speaking with an acquaintance next to him, though he knew her eyes were shrewdly scanning the crowd - no doubt looking for his missing fiancée. Jian could only envy the elusive Mae. He didn’t blame her for taking off when she had the chance. While he doubted he’d do the same if he’d been in her shoes, he could understand the desire to be free from the obligations that came with being part of the nobility.

If she was lucky, she wouldn’t be forced into making an appearance. He’d heard rumors that she’d been found, but for his own sanity, he’d tried to focus on other things. Beyond knowing that his parents - namely his mother - were livid at the embarrassment of being connected to such a ‘disgraceful girl’, Jian tried to steer clear of the topic of his pending nuptials.

From what he understood, Mae seemed to hate the arrangement, as well as him. The thought hurt a tad, part of Jian hoping that they could at least connect on the fact that neither of them had asked to be put in this situation, but it seemed that that wouldn’t be possible.

Again, he couldn’t blame her, but he was still human. No matter how stoic his father tried to make him.

“I need another drink…”
he mumbled to himself, glancing down at his now empty glass. So lost in his thoughts, he hadn’t realized that he’d drained it.

’What was that, dear?’ came the sharp voice of his mother.

Jian winced, clearing his throat to cover the gesture.
“Ah, nothing, my apologies, mother.”
he reassured.
“Were you still thirsty? I’ll go and fetch a waiter for a refill.”
he rushed out, glancing at the near empty wine glass in his mother’s hand.

Before she could offer a protest, Jian had already turned away and was halfway across the floor, headed towards a table set up for refreshments.

God…the night had only just begun and he already needed a break.

the end

Lorelei felt like a doll on the wrong shelf in the children’s toy aisle. Sure, she looked the part of the daughter of nobility, but it was all a mask. Something created, painted, to look like she belonged. She knew the truth though. Beyond her use as a bargaining chip for her father, Lorelei was not welcome here. She was not like her peers, she was a fraud, masquerading as if she belonged.

The excited voice of her friend and companion drew her from her weary thoughts. A small smile was quick to take over her face, as she looked over at the blonde.

“I’m glad you’re enjoying yourself,”
she responded softly, her voice only just barely able to be heard. Just because she was with her friend, didn’t mean that she could be as free as she wished. She was trained far too well for such a simple mistake.

Lorelei was no better than a toy that was at her father’s beck and call. Meant to be seen, to be used to curry favor. But she was definitely not meant to be heard.

“Thank you for agreeing to come with me.”
she added after a moment, feeling the urge to make sure Cami knew that Lorelei appreciated her.
“I have no doubt some parts of this evening will be a tad boring but…at least having one friendly face will be a bit of a relief.”

She laughed softly, nodding in agreement as her friend suggested trying the food. Letting the blonde lead the way to the buffet, they hugged the walls of the room, avoiding the dance floor as much as possible, along with all the other mingling parties absorbed in discussion. She wanted to flinch at some of the hushed whispers she caught wind of mentions of her or her father’s names.

Great…no doubt she’d be hearing about that later.

Coming to a stop beside her friend, Lorelei decided that giving in and sampling a sweet or two wouldn’t be the end of the world. As long as they were small pieces, surely she could escape a long lecture about maintaining her figure. Pleased with her decision, she lifted one small pastry, preparing to take a bite when she froze at Cami’s question.

“N-no it’s fine…I,”
she paused, her hand lowering the pastry so it sat on the small plate she’d collected it from.
“I don’t believe I’ve met him before, and my father…beyond telling me his name, I wasn’t given much information about what would be happening.”

Lorelei shrugged, trying to brush off the depressive mood she’d brought to their conversation.
“It’s a little silly though, isn’t it?”
she laughed softly. Awkwardly.
“This is supposed to be my engagement party and all I know about my fiancée is his name!”

Her laugh turned to a chuckle before ending with a small sigh.
“Nathan Jones…”

Damian was what one could call a bit of a farm boy, through and through. He wasn’t one for big parties and large crowds. He preferred the outdoors, working hard, and getting his hands dirty. Don’t get him wrong, he didn’t dislike people, but he would much rather be surrounded by a small few close friends or coworkers compared to the large group that was beginning to form in the ballroom.

If it wasn’t for him wanting to surprise his childhood friend, he probably wouldn’t have shown tonight. After all, an engagement party had nothing to do with him, especially seeing as he wasn’t a member of the nobility. Something he was more than grateful for.

Fidgeting with the sleeve of his jacket, Damian took another glance around the room, trying to see if he could find anyone he knew. He’d arrived recently, right as Maggie was leaving the stage, which caused him to frown in disappointment. He’d been hoping to catch part of her first set, but it seems that he wasn’t that lucky.

He recognized a few faces walking by, but he stayed put, not wanting to get in anyone’s way or cause a problem with some rich family. That was the last thing he and his parents needed, someone trying to take revenge out on them and their small farm.

Damian had to give props to his shy friend and her courage to actually be able to handle performing in front of such people. Not to mention the size of the crowd. Just mingling is one thing, but to potentially be the center of everyone’s attention? He didn’t know how she did it.

The buzz of his phone caught his attention, drawing him out of his thoughts. Pulling it out, he smiled at the text.

Speak and they shall appear, or something like that.

Maggie had just texted him, letting him know she was done with her first set. ‘I’m sure you did amazing! : D’ he sent back. He slid the device back into his pocket with a smile. So she was definitely done for a little while, that was good.

“I wonder if I can find a way backstage…”
he mumbled to himself, scratching at the back of his head. Looking towards the now empty stage, he tilted his head, considering.

He really doubted security would just let him wander back there…

infinitely falling

Penny couldn’t help but bounce in place from her spot a half step behind Alara. She was just so excited!!! The idea of a ball was just so interesting! And an engagement one? How romantic! If she wasn’t waiting to be let into the ballroom beside her employer, she probably would’ve swooned at the thoughts running through her head.

The redhead just couldn’t help it! The idea of dancing at a ball with her fiancée was just too good a daydream to pass up. Something she was currently envisioning if the dreamy look on her face was any indication.

A throat cleared behind her, snapping Penny out of her thoughts with a blush. She cleared her throat and hurried a few steps forward so she was once again beside Alara. Her friend and - technically - her boss, had been gracious enough to invite her to the party as well. Her fellow redhead hadn’t wanted to go alone with just her family, and Penny couldn’t blame her for that.

Who would want to mingle with their parents at a ball?

Not Penny, that’s who! Not that she could, even if she wanted to, but that was beside the point!

Thankfully they were ushered inside a few moments later, allowing the two girls some space to break away from the rest of the Olsen family. Which, in Penny’s opinion, was a great relief. Nothing against the family, but this was supposed to be a party! Two young women couldn’t have fun at a party with their parents hovering over their shoulders!

With a quick smile at the elder, Penny was quick to grab Alara’s hand and pull her into the crowd and away from her parents.
“Okay!”
she chirped, turning to face the other redhead.
“Now that we’re away from the rents, tell me! What’re you most excited about? Where do you want to go? Are we hitting the bar first, the buffet table, what?”
she asked in quick succession.

Once again, she was bouncing in place, but oh well.

“Oh oh, or are we trying to see if we can spot your future husband?”
she giggled, waggling her brows.
“I think Pint said he was coming too, do you want to see if we can find him? Although I do want to try all the food…”

“Well, I’m sure we’ll have enough time to do everything, but what do you want to do first?”
