I was toying with the idea of him being a penetant. His unhealthy fixation with the absolution of his own personal sin might bleed over into other forms of theology-based insanity. As for the reason he might trap and butcher the Undead, perhaps he feels he is liberating or observing their souls, or perhaps he doesn't butcher them at all but rather suspects them of being possessed by some sort of Spirit of Malice and must then have that spirit excercised through extreme pain, or death.

He doesn't nor did he have a daughter or a wife. It's fairly common for practicing physicians to be bachelors, actually, especially if they spent their early adult years in the Army.
