Editing

AlexSilverX

The Blind Idiot God
So I noticed as I was having a conversation with a group of two friends that there is a limit to what messages can be edited. I noted this because we were discussing making an RP as a group and when we wanted to add information to an earlier post (to gather all out stuff in the same post) it was clearly impossible for any of us 3 (the post's original poster, the one who started the PM, and the third member of our group all tried to no avail.) to edit it. We had each posted twice after the post in question and it had been posted 3 hours prior (unsure if this is relevant, just giving as much info as possible.)

We eventually just moved all the info to the next post and - gradually - made new posts with more and more info in them as needed. This, obviously, resulted in a monstrously large conversation.

Since this was a conversation, it wasn't so much of a problem, but in light of the fact that we are planning on making an RP and are a trio of newbies who had not noticed this "editing limitation" as we call it up until that point, I have a series of questions regarding editing:

1. In a conversation, why is it that we cannot edit less recent posts but can edit the most recent ones? What are the exact regulations over this (is there a time-limit? Is it because too many posts were made after it?) and WHY is this limitation in place?

2. In a forum (particularly, in an RP, but as a whole), does this editing limitation also apply? Does it follow the same rules as those instated in conversations? Once again, WHY is this limitation in place?

3. As a moderator of an RP, can you edit the information in your own posts at any given time or does that also become impossible after a certain time? Can a moderator edit the posts of other people as well? Does being a moderator change the editing rules in any way? WHY?

Thank you for answering these questions as soon as possible.

Hello!

To answer your questions:

1. Messages in PMs can be edited for up to 10 minutes after they've been sent.

2. No, it does not apply in public forums. This limitation is put in place for PMs because we've had troubles with harassment in the past. What would happen would be someone would say something super mean in a PM and before the recipient had a chance to report it, the sender would edit the post to say something nice, or what have you.

3. Being a moderator of a roleplay is the same as the answer above: GMs (and any user) can edit their posts at any time. Creators of roleplays can't edit other people's posts (unless they are a hosted project moderator, but that's something else entirely). However, site moderators can edit other people's posts. They don't unless the content being posted is inappropriate and/or rule-breaking.

Hope this helped.

Cheers,

Mord

It's 5 minutes. Also, GMs of rps that aren't hosted projects can edit posts in their rps. In all tabs as far as I can remember. I've done it before earning mod status.

I thought that changed when the tab system changed.

I will get back to you on that.

If it changed today then I wouldn't know. xD Could be wrong.

It was down for a while but it may be reinstated. xD I never know because I can edit anything anyways.

I will discuss with le Wizard and give you a more definite answer at that time.

Ooh. I remember now. It went down when we were instating forum mods but should be back up now. So, yes, GMs should be able to edit posts in their roleplays. *mumbles something about being on her mobile too late for her own good*

Time to sleep.

They can actually, creators of Thread RPs can delete/edit and stuff posts in their RPs(only in their RPs though).
