Before his death in 1957, a scientist named John von Neumann developed a mathematical theory for how machines could endlessly reproduce themselves. This theory introduced the self-replication of automatons and established a quantitative definition of self-replication. His work gave rise to the idea of “von Neumann probes“, a class of self-replicating probes (SRPs) that could be acclimated to do everything from exploring the universe to seeding it with life and intervening in species evolution.
Our story (technically) begins 157 years after the death of John von Neumann, when NASA finally sends 50 working SRPs into space. If the SRPs were successful in their task, it would realistically take a minimum of one million years for the probes to traverse the whole galaxy. With the SRPs deployed, the space agency was focused on a grander, more ambitious task: terraforming Mars.
While Earth was originally focused on terraforming the Red Planet, the research and development of domes on Mars was slowed and halted four times for unknown reasons. No one expected the planet to be changed overnight, but as more time passes the dream of Mars becoming completely terraformed seems impossible.

Exactly 1,001 years after the deployment of the SRPs, Earthians and Martians are met with ominous news.
The Martians had constructed a massive space vessel named MS Terigon which could easily be compared to a dreadnought. At this moment, the Martians have refused to explain why they had deployed such a beast into space, but the political backlash is the least of their problems. The dreadnought and its 117 passengers, only in space for a week, were obliterated in a matter of minutes. The means of their destruction is currently unknown which has re-sparked the rumors of extraterrestrial life.
3 months after the incident, a new space-oriented task force was created. They were to work alongside NASA but unlike them, members from other countries (and Mars) were recruited. This new task force, dubbed USTF (United Space Task Force), seems to be invite-only and extremely secretive.
9 months after the incident, Earth and Mars announced that they were deploying the elite task force with the help of NASA to personally seek out the dreadnought's means of destruction. Even after hearing this, the population remains unsatisfied, but government leaders refuse to give details pertaining to the mission.

It is the year 3115.
The characters created will be part of the task force mentioned above. For the past nine months, the top space researches have been tirelessly working on finding out what destroyed the MS Terigon. Six months ago, the characters were persuaded into leaving their previous professions and joining this new task force (ex. money, wanderlust, duty). For the past six months, the characters have worked alongside NASA and the United States Government, training for the day they would be deployed into space.
All members of the task force have been told what is expected of them: to search the site in hopes of finding signs of life. The officials in charge of this project are certain that foul play is involved, especially since upon their initial investigation, there were no bodies found. The GA is hopeful that this task force will discover extraterrestrial life.
When recruited they were told that they would have to attend classes to prepare them for space travel. They were told that the task they were training for would be arguably the most important in human history. They were told that they couldn't tell anyone that they had joined USTF, even family. Their training including learning about medical procedures and survival in space. They were also required to take language classes in case they would need to speak to the Russian Mission Control Center. Their classes were secluded, no member of the task force ever meeting each other before this week.
The roleplay will begin on a large space station between Earth and Mars, a few minutes before the USTF take off into space.
- Looking for 3-5 players who can write a minimum of one paragraph per post. I encourage lengthy posts but if you aren't able, a paragraph should suffice. If you decide you are interested in this, I ask that you be prepared to post once per week. I wish to see this to the end.
- This roleplay will be filled with elements of mystery, violence, and adventure.
- One character per player. Take into consideration what is being asked of the characters when choosing their background and age. Only one of the characters in this roleplay are allowed to be Martian (sorry!).
- This roleplay will be somewhat grounded so while we might see ships with lasers, bio-mods,
or aliens, there will be no space samurai with cybernetic feet that grant them superhuman speed.
