Just like Faeglyn said, he lacks common sensibilities and might had been indirectly killed whoever were with him. Once he feed a sick person poisonous food because he think all foods are good, then there's another instance when another person died after smelling toxic fart from a monster while he's totally unaffected by it. In other words Gion needs to learn things he can't experience, hence why he's actually quite observant.

for the record tho, they fell on one of the many paths that are stretched out down this large silo-like hole. not really ground, its made of a unique material that puts a glow in the air (Which is why they can see). so its kinda random that he managed to fall on the same path theyre on, and idk if its wide enough for a big armored man to step around peeps
