The Legend:
Arida was once a flourishing, vibrant city, full of peace and hope for the future. Its citizens were skilled craftsmen, brilliant artists and writers, the highest strata of society. Even the poor were well-off; all was well in Arida. The city was considered a hub of civilization, the very pinnacle of the world. For centuries, Arida dominated the landscape around it with its quickly growing skyline.
Nobody is sure what caused the First Infestation. The only known fact is that the city began to suffer horrible streaks of murders, mutilations, and deaths. The victims, disturbingly, showed distinct insignias on their bodies…symbols, demonic in design. The sages spoke in hushed whispers of spirits, then panicked shouts as the deaths increased exponentially. Most bodies were found mutilated, but there were other people, never found. Others simply ceased to breathe, seemingly unmarked. As the city began to fall apart, terror consuming it, the spirits became more brazen in their assaults, leaving households, businesses, and streets bloody and filled with bodies. The leaders steeled their will; something had to be done.
The greatest conjurers and captors of the realm gathered together and designated confinement points throughout the city. They drew their powers together, and cast the incantation; with their spell, the spirits haunting the city were banished into the confinement points, unable to escape their prison eternally. The city was saved, but at a cost: the spirit hunters who had cast the spell lost their souls too, sacrificing them as the energy to create confinement points. So it is that the First Infestation ended.
