Dust On My Shoulders

Rayman

Jolly Good Elk
“Now departing to Twin City, Moon Clust.”

A large female jumped in surprise, having fallen asleep on the train.

“Not from ther’ city, eh?” A grimy man questioned the woman, “Yer’ from the fields?”

The gal nodded.

She was so damn afraid of heading towards the city, having heard it was full of horrible magic and odd people, not to mention the city’s unfresh air.

“This is probably the last time I might see the green grass again. Do you live in the city?” She questioned, curious about the stranger.

“Yer bet I do! Not a bad place, o’ce yer know it. I’m Maverick, whas’ yers?” Maverick asked the woman.

“Jasper, it’s a pleasure to meet you, Maverick.” The worker gave the beggar a kind smile, holding her hand out to greet him.

He took it with a polite smile.

“So! Twin Cities, eh? Yer afraid, you said?”

Jasper nodded.

“Big tough town, but los’ of very beautful’ women- and men! Handsome, I mean.” Maverick snickered at his foolishness. Jasper smiled too. The beggar had a small sense of humor.

“How long does it take until the train stops at Twin City?” Jasper questioned as she began to fuss with her rucksack until she pulled out a small framed photo of a large and unkept family. The worker smiled, setting the photo down.

“Family back home, eh?” The man asked as he peered down at the picture.

“Uh- huh. I’ve got other family in the city, too. I’m visiting, but I’m staying at the same time.” Jasper shrugged and handed the picture to Maverick.

“Do you have a place ter’ stay?” Maverick questioned her while he admired the photo.

Big family, he found.

“Oh, no. I’ve gotta make due with whatever hits me.” The farmer said and shrugged, once again shuffling with her backpack.

“Oi! You ain’t got a place to stay?!” Maverick nearly shouted and, in emotion, he flailed his arms.

Jasper shrugged again.

“Hm…. I gotta friend.. Lemme ring ‘er up, be right back.” And with that, Maverick stood and walked to the end of the train car, dialing someone on his flip phone.

“Hey…” Some obvious giggles at the other end of the line broke his sentence. “Yeah, I know I owe shit, eh. I need a favor…ugh, yes, ah’ll give it to you when I see yer’...”

They chatted for a few minutes, obviously catching up and making arrangements, deals and business propositions.

“‘Aight, stay chill, Water Bitch.” Maverick snickered, hung up and walked back to their seats.

Jasper goggled at him.

“Yer’ welcome, Jass’. Hope you’s comfortable with sleeping in the same room with a girl, eh?”

Beyond words, the farmer tackled Maverick into a bear hug and repeated thanks over and over again.

“Calm down ther’, girlie! You’s jus’ a big teddy bear beneath that hard shell o’ yers, ain’t yer?’ The beggar asked with a laugh as Jasper thanked him once more.

The woman wiped her eyes and nodded quickly, hugging and thanking him again and again.
