Fantasy Divinity Unbound - The Gods

ChoShadow

That One Fear In My Enemy's Eyes
The Gods

The Gods share many traits with the Mortals whom they have created, but they also differ in various ways from their Children.

For starters, the Gods were not “born” as the Mortals are (in most cases). The Gods simply Awaken to consciousness. From what is the slumber from which they wake? Not even they know. Who created The Eternal where their souls go to rest once their days come to an end? They do not know.

The Gods are not omnipotent, nor omniscient. There are many mysteries surrounding their own Awakening and death which they’ve yet to solve.

Is there some sort of even higher power above the Gods?

Many theorize so, but many others have other theories including the Divine Consciousness theory which states that all of the Gods are of one higher consciousness and Awaken as pieces of it to fulfill a larger whole. The same theory suggests that when they die and their souls pass to The Eternal, it is a recycling of their knowledge and wisdom to pass on to the next God or Goddess to take the place of the one who passed.

But again, nobody knows for sure what is going on at a higher level beyond even the knowledge of the Gods.

The Original Gods

The Father and Mother of All

So named for a single reason: They Awoke first.

The Father and Mother of All are the oldest and wisest of the Gods. In fact they were the first Gods to Awaken to consciousness, and were present for the Awakening of all other Gods up until this point in time. While other Gods and Goddesses have passed to The Eternal over time, the Father and Mother of All have thus far withstood the test of time and continue to exist despite having seen many of their brothers and sisters Awaken and pass to The Eternal.

They are the original progenitors of the idea of creating a Mortal Realm to watch over, and they, along with many others, took part in its creation by using their power to create Life to occupy this Realm.

The Father and Mother of All, specifically, created all humanoid races save one which belongs to another. The humans, elves, orcs, hyena men, merfolk, miithii, faeries, nymphs, dwarves, goblins, kobolds, etc. All of them owe their existence to the Father and Mother of All.

However, their Children are woefully ignorant to their origins and have created their own Gods and Goddesses to worship as their Creators. Though the Father and Mother of All have accepted this, their hearts are heavy that their Children will never know their names.

Sil’Eph Niir

The mighty Dragon Goddess, and most powerful of the Gods. With the ability to take the form of a massive Dragon, Sil’Eph Niir stands alone as the single most powerful God ever to Awaken in the Higher Realm. A single blast from Her mouth in Dragon form could wipe out the Mortal world if She were so inclined.

Luckily, She is the very definition of benevolence and empathy. She hasn’t a single malicious bone in Her body, and She knows exactly how to control Her unfathomable power.

She is the Mother of Maglissos, a Dragon God born unto Her via Divine Reproduction. Sil’Eph Niir pooled Her power into her body to create a new Life. A Divine Life. And thus, Maglissos was conceived within His Mother’s body and born as all mortals are. As an infant, He grew rapidly and proved to have many of His Mother’s best traits. He was brave, honest, kind, empathetic, and powerful. In time it is no secret that He would have made a fine successor to His Mother when Her time came to pass to The Eternal.

Alas, it was not so.

During a surprise invasion of the Higher Realm, Maglissos was killed protecting His gravely injured Mother. But instead of letting that be the end of it, the Demons stole Maglissos’ body and retreated to the Nether Realm from whence they came. Now stolen, Maglissos’ soul remains trapped within His body and is now forever prevented from passing to The Eternal where He may rest in peace.

Heartbroken, Sil’Eph Niir mourned the death of Her son and the theft of His body for many years. Eventually she accepted this reality, but it nevertheless left Her with permanent emotional scars.

Sil’Eph Niir’s role in the creation of the Mortal Realm was the creation of the mighty Dragon Race, the most powerful mortals in existence. Like their Mother, they have both a humanoid and Dragon form, the latter of which makes them incredibly powerful and dangerous when engaged in combat. The smallest of the Dragon Race’s draconic forms is approximately 14’ at the shoulder and at least 70’ long from nose to tail.

They are massive, majestic, powerful, and built very well in the image of their Mother.

Unlike the other Mortals, the Dragons know exactly who their Mother is. Her slumbering form rests just beneath the earth in a massive cave system within which the Dragons keep a constant and very close watch on Her. They will let nothing touch Her. They will let nothing harm Her. They will protect their Mother until the day of Her awakening which they can sense is drawing near.

Kielreath

Kielreath is the God of Oceans. He created all life that calls the ocean home with the exception of the oceanic humanoids like the merfolk and seagoing miithii races. Fish, seagoing mammals, crustaceans, cephalopods, arthropods, etc. All life that calls the ocean home owes its existence to Kielreath.

He is a benevolent God, but He has a temper. Like the oceans He created, His power rages when his anger is triggered. And, oddly enough, whenever His rage is triggered in the Higher Realm the oceans below in the Mortal Realm seem to respond and become more violent and prone to storms and surges of violent behavior. Typhoons, hurricanes, tsunamis, undersea volcanic eruptions. Many catastrophes have occurred whenever Kielreath’s rage has been unleashed.

Brothan

Brothan is the God of the Land. He created the Earth upon which all mortal life was created. In short, He is the Father of the foundation of the Mortal Realm. Without Him, there would be no Earth or Mortal humanoid races to occupy it and fight amongst themselves on an almost constant basis.

If it sounds a bit cynical, it’s because Brothan is cynical.

He resents the humanoids for their wars and destructive behaviors. He did not create this planet for them so they could destroy what He built. The landscapes they destroy in the name of “expansion” and “progress.” The monumental structures they tear down because they’re “in the way” or “on prime ground for (insert aspect of society here).”

Brothan is very, very resentful that His work is marred by the humanoid’s existence. Though He keeps this to Himself, He cannot hide it from everyone. Least of all the Father and Mother of All who sympathize with Him but ask that He turn a blind eye. Their Children are young and naive, unaware of their impact on the world that the Gods have created for them.

They have promised that someday the mortals will open their eyes and see what they’ve done and harm the Earth no further… But it will take time.

… Too much time for Brothan’s personal taste.

Zariel

Zariel is the Goddess of Flora, and easily the most sensitive of the Gods from an emotional standpoint.

She created the grass, the trees, the bushes, the cacti, the flowers, the vines. Everything green that grows from the Earth is considered Her child.

And thus, She has suffered the most of any God or Goddess due to humanoid naivety.

The forests have burned or been chopped down. The grasses trampled or flattened out deliberately to create roads. The bushes and vines chopped and uprooted. The cacti sliced and gutted for their liquids.

Her children have suffered greatly due to humanoid violence, even if it was largely in the name of survival and expansion. Nevertheless, Zariel is greatly shamed and emotionally upset by the way Her Children have been treated by the Children of other Gods. She has had many conversations with the Father and Mother of All about this, but there is nothing they can do now. The humanoids live their lives according to their own will, and though the Father and Mother of All do not condone the actions their Children are taking, there is nothing they can do about it.

Zariel has become increasingly distant from the other Gods up until this point, and there are those who fear that She will soon reveal some sort of punishment for those who have assaulted Her children so…

Juvenrea

Juvenrea is the Goddess of Fauna, and the Sister of Zariel.

Just as Zariel created all plant life, Juvenrea created all fauna which occupies the planet on the land and in the skies. The birds, the small, medium and large mammals, the reptiles, amphibians, insects, etc. All fauna which walks on two or four legs, or crawls, slithers, and creeps on no or up to eight legs, owes its existence to Juvenrea.

Unlike Her Sister, Juvenrea knew going in that Her Children would be hunted and killed by others for survival. They would even be hunting and killing each other for survival. She accepted this fact long ago, but the expediting of the process by the humanoids has not gone unnoticed.

While she isn’t as cynical and Brothan and not as resentful as Zariel, Juvenrea has indeed begun harboring a distaste for the humanoids which over hunt and drive many of Her children to the brink of extinction for their own personal gains in food, furs, bones, organs, etc. The rather sickening and barbaric nature of some of the humanoid races has Juvenrea on edge.

D’ro

The God of Time.

Not much need be said about this. D’ro is the God of Time and created the system by which the Earth revolves around the sun once every 365 days. He also imparted this knowledge unto the humanoids after a time by guiding them to figuring out how to measure the days and how to recognize the return of seasons meaning that there is some kind of cycle at play.

It took hundreds of years, but the humanoids finally got it right and today operate universally on a 365 day calendar to keep track of the passage of time.

Le’av

The God of Physics.

Having created the Laws of Physics by which the Mortal Realm operates, Le’av is the one responsible for all things which the mortals take for granted such as the invisible forces of gravity which keep them firmly rooted to the planet instead of allowing them to simply float away.

The humans are not yet ready to uncover the secrets of higher physics, and thus gravity isn’t even a concept to them. They know only that they jump up and come back down, and that is enough for them.

The forces of gravity will not be discovered for many centuries to come, but Le’av is patient and is waiting for the right moment to lend a guiding hand to the humanoids that they may at least recognize His work even if He gets no credit for it.

Os’thenta

Goddess of Magic.

As the Creator of Magic in the Mortal Realm, Os’thenta is understandably the most magically gifted of all the Gods. While not the most powerful, she has mastered every form of Divine Magic to a degree no others have.

She has imparted some of her power onto the Mortal Realm, thus allowing many humanoids, save a specific few, to access and harness the power of magic.

Thus far her work has ensured a semblance of balance amongst the near constantly warring humanoids. But nothing lasts forever. There are already signs that darker and more forbidden magics never meant to be harnessed by humanoids are now beginning to see the light of day. And try as She might, Os’thenta has not been able to identify the culprit(s) or stop them from using these forbidden magics on their world.

The Gods

The difference between the Original Gods and the Gods is that the Original Gods are the creators of the Mortal Realm. They are the origin of mortal life, and so they have earned the title of “Original” Gods.

The rest of the Gods exist as part of an entire race not unlike all mortal life in the Mortal Realm. There are millions of Gods in the Higher Realm, but only the handful listed above have had a hand in creating the Mortal Realm.

The rest simply exist as part of a utopian society. They live in perfect harmony free from any concept of money, greed, corruption, or strife. It is the perfect world where all share and share all equally without any thought for individual agenda. The greater whole is always the focus of their lives.

However, the Gods themselves are not without their share of troubles…

The Demos of the Nether Realm, or sometimes known also as the Demonic Realm, are their equal and opposite in every way. Powerful. In harmony with one another. But whereas the Higher Realm is a utopia of peace, tranquility and prosperity, the Nether Realm is a utopia of greed, cruelty, and violence. Somehow the chaos remains under control thanks to the King of Demons, but nevertheless the Demonic forces are Gods equal and opposite to their counterparts in the Higher Realm.

Maglissos

Maglissos is the Son of Sil’Eph Niir and one of the first true natural birthings of a God in the history of the Divines.

He was conceived by the sheer mass of Sil’Eph Niir’s power which she focused into a single point within her body to create a new Divine Life. That feat, in and of itself, is a miracle of the highest order.

To recap, the Gods typically are not born as mortals are. They simply Awaken to consciousness.

Maglissos, having been conceived and born within the body of His Mother, is not unlike the Mortals in the Mortal Realm. He began life as an infant, grew into adulthood, and matured throughout the centuries of his life until his untimely death.

The surprise invasion of the Higher Realm by the forces of the Nether Realm caught the Gods completely off guard. Even Sil’Eph Niir, Maglissos’ almighty Mother and most powerful of the Gods, was struck down by the sheer numbers of Her attackers.

With His Mother now gravely injured and on the brink of death, Maglissos, despite his youth and inexperience, bravely came to His Mother’s aid. He assaulted the Demonic forces with ferocious vigor and managed to draw them all away from Her. However this only allowed them to focus their assault on Him without interference. Even so, Maglissos fought without fear and managed to destroy hundreds of Demonic entities before He suffered a grievous injury by one of their more powerful warriors.

The Demon known simply as D’hregan managed to flank Maglissos and pierced His body with a Demonic Scepter. Had it been any ordinary Scepter, this wound would not have had any significant impact on Maglissos thanks to His durability in Dragon form. But a Demonic Scepter houses Demonic energy which is equal and opposite to the energy of the Gods, and thus this Scepter had the power to negatively effect the then weakened Maglissos and brought him down.

Now fatally wounded, Maglissos was helpless to stop the coming onslaught which only ended with His death. After they confirmed Maglissos was no more, the Demons surrounded His corpse and used their magic to escape the Higher Realm and return to the Nether Realm. Not only did this deny Maglissos’ soul passage to The Eternal, but it also ensured that now the Demonic forces had a weapon to use against the Gods they sought to destroy.
