The Backstory
“Not even the Gods are forever…”
- Anonymous
Many eons ago the mighty Dragon Goddess, Sil’Eph Niir, the most powerful of all the Gods, gave birth to Her First Son, Maglissos. His birth was a joyful occasion for the Gods, but none were as proud as His Mother. Maglissos, over the course of several centuries, grew into a fine God in His own right. He was righteous, honorable, empathetic, and kind hearted with a strong spirit. Like His Mother he had a powerful Dragon Form which quickly proved his worthiness to one day succeed His Mother when Her time came to pass to The Eternal.
But, nothing good can last forever.
One day, seemingly from nowhere, the dark forces of the Nether Realm suddenly breached the defenses of the Higher Realm’s magical sigils and flooded into their world. A massive battle ensued with the demonic forces gaining an early upper hand due to the element of surprise and preparation. Their coordinated efforts drove the Gods to the brink of annihilation until Sil’Eph Niir took to Her Divine Dragon Form and began laying waste to their enemies.
Yet for all of her power, even the Goddess Sil’Eph Niir was eventually overpowered by the sheer numbers of her attackers. Badly wounded and on the verge of death, Maglissos bravely came to His Mother’s aid. But being young and inexperienced, Maglissos was struck down and killed before His Mother’s helpless eyes. But instead of coming for Her as She thought, the enemy stole the body of Her Son and retreated back to the darkness from whence they came.
Sil’Eph Niir mourned the death and theft of of Her Son’s body for years before finally coming to terms with the fact that He was gone and She would not get him back.
And so time passed….
More Backstory
What became of Sil’Eph Niir after Maglissos’ death and the theft of His body?
Like mortals, the Gods have their version of Heaven. It is called “The Eternal.” It is the final resting place of the souls of the Gods.
Also, like Mortals, the Gods are not forever. They do experience death when their days come to an end. They are immune to all forms of disease and infection, and have incredibly long life spans. But they are not truly immortal as the mortals believe.
When a God or Goddess dies, their body must be placed in the Divine Altar so that their spirit may be released and pass on to The Eternal. By stealing Maglissos’ body, the forces of the demonic realm have forever robbed Him of His right to rest in peace in the most sacred resting place to the soul.
Sil’Eph Niir, partially to fill the emotional void and partially to do her part in the creation of the Mortal Realm, became a Mother once again. She gave birth to what would become the mighty Dragon Race in the Mortal Realm, the most powerful and glorious creatures to ever live.
With her labor complete, Sil’Eph Niir entered hibernation in the Mortal Plane after exhausting Her power to birth Her Children. Her body rests peacefully beneath the earth where Her children keep a loving and watchful eye on their Mother. They know instinctively that She is nearing the day She awakes from this slumber. They won’t let anything bring harm to their Mother. Many humanoids have journeyed to the land of Her slumbering form seeking riches or some sort of key to immortality… And all have perished.
The RP’s Beginning - The Modern Day
From dark places are born dark magics.
The demonic realm, having stolen the body of Maglissos, have a weapon to use should they successfully revive Him. And they have found a way to do just that. By utilizing their followers in the Mortal Realm and having them access forbidden magics previously sealed away by the Gods, they have found a way to siphon the energy of the Dragon Race to fuel the rebirth of their new Dragon God. And by utilizing such dark and forbidden magic, they have ensured the corruption of His currently slumbering soul. Thus, when He awakens, He will be their ally and their greatest weapon against the Gods.
And so we have our story.
The mighty Dragon Race is now beginning to feel the effects of these dark and forbidden magics. Their powers are waning. Their life force as a species is weakening. And if they don’t find the cause and stop it, soon, they face extinction.
And so the Dragons have been forced to do the impossible… They have beseeched the humanoid races for help.
Until now the Dragons have kept to themselves in the Dragon’s Cove, the centralized continent archipelago where Sil’Eph Niir sleeps beneath the earth. But now they have sent envoys to the largest settlements of humans, elves, dwarves, faeries, nymphs, uranus, miithii, merfolk, and even the orcs and goblins. Their pleas have fallen on mostly deaf ears. Because of their isolation, the humanoids have not seen a reason to help them. Those who have offered did so only on the condition they be reimbursed with the treasure rumored to “sleep” within the Dragon’s Cove.
Unwilling to allow the humanoids to lay eyes on their Mother, the Dragons have been forced to continue their search for any who will lend aid without promise of impossible reimbursement. To date, they have found no-one. None willing to help unless “helped” in return.
But their powers continue to wane, and the Dragons are now running out of time. They must find a way to end this assault on their species or risk extinction.
But how?…
