Magic
Magic in this RP is similar to many other forms of magic in other fantasy-based RP’s you’ve likely encountered.
The source of magic, known simply as mana, is a powerful presence in the world which many forms of creatures are able to harness on some level or another. Even regular animals can sometimes harness mana and demonstrate almost supernatural feats such as suddenly disappearing or moving faster than they normally should.
Mana was created by Os’thenta to occupy the Mortal Realm originally as a source of power that would help the world remain in balance. But over time the world and mortal beings began taking to this power She created in ways that not even She had predicted.
The ability of mortals to adapt to and absorb mana and thereby utilize it for magical purposes was not something Os’thenta had intended to allow. However, after seeing the potential in this process Os’thenta decided to allow it to remain so as it did indeed help with bringing balance to the world. Especially among the near constantly warring humanoids.
Magical power is a natural deterrent to conflict, and many a time a demonstration of overwhelming magical power has been used to prevent dangerous and harmful conflicts from taking place. Preventative measures, if you will.
Seeing this, Os’thenta elected to watch and wait. And to this day She observes the Mortal Realm very carefully in the event she feels she needs to withdraw mana from the world and forever rob the humanoids of the ability to use magic for their own purposes.
She knows how to reapply mana to the world in a way the humanoids cannot use it, but She declines for the time being.
How to Use Magic
To utilize magical power, one has to learn how to adapt their body to the presence of mana and, furthermore, teach it how to absorb it.
Mana as a presence in the world is not something that just anyone can suddenly use. It takes years of dedicated training and practice to teach one’s body to adapt to the presence of mana by itself, and years upon years more to learn to harness it. And even then, harnessing mana is only the beginning because harnessing mana is not the same thing as actually using it to generate magic.
The generation of magic and the utilization of it in ways that can be used either offensively, defensively, or passively is a lifetime pursuit, and not one that anyone can take lightly or with any level of casualness.
It is a deadly serious lifetime pursuit.
Once mana’s presence has been adapted to, the body must learn to harness it. This takes hours upon hours of daily meditation and learning to feel mana as a presence in the air around yourself. It is almost indistinguishable from the air which is why it often takes many years to succeed in this venture. But once the body has learned to distinguish the mana’s presence from the air around themselves, they can begin learning how to gain control of it enough that they may gently guide it, not force it, to enter their bodies.
Once they have learned how to guide mana into their body instead of deflecting off of it as it usually does, the next step is teaching their bodies how to allow mana to flow freely through it.
Typically a humanoid’s body is rejective of mana which is why mana usually deflects harmlessly off of the body. But once a humanoid has learned to gently guide mana into the body, they have to teach the body how to allow mana free passage. This process takes several years to do, as essentially they are reprogramming their body and its natural tendencies from scratch. Anyone thinking this process is easy to do is dreaming.
When they have taught their bodies how to freely allow mana to enter and flow through them, then the real training in magic begins.
Slowly, over the course of many further years of dedicated training and practice, humanoids can learn to guide higher and higher volumes of mana through their bodies which is how they begin to generate enough power to activate magical abilities. The types of abilities they unlock are largely dependent upon their natural affinity to mana.
Mana exists as all types of magic at once, but every mortal being only has one affinity which they will ever be able to utilize. Someone who’s affinity is Fire, for example, will only ever be able to utilize Fire magic. Someone who’s affinity is Healing will only ever be able to utilize Healing. Etc, etc.
Once one’s affinity has been identified, they are sent to beseech one of the Elder Mages to select a Master for them who has the same magical affinity who will then teach them further how to utilize their magic power. If the Elder Mages, located in the magic capital city of Rathuum, agree to the plea of finding a master, one will be selected. If the Elder Mages do not agree, then the individual’s magical training comes to an end immediately.
But why would the Elder Mages need to give permission?
The Elder Mages are guided by the word of Os’thenta who constantly watches the world of magic. She has the ability, like all Gods, to see within the depths of the souls of mortals. If She sees something within the heart of the mortal in question She does not approve of, she gently whispers into the Elder Mage’s ears that this person cannot be trusted with magic.
When and if this takes place, the individual in question is denied forever the right to practice magic and are placed on watch. If they ever try to practice magic again they will be apprehended and put to death.
Magic is taken very seriously, and Os’thenta will not allow those without her approval to use mana for their own purposes.
The Dark Magics…
If Os’thenta can do all of that, why can’t she stop the mortals who are using dark magics?
Well, she’s not the only progenitor of magic. There are Demons in the Nether Realm who are able to do the same thing she can and who have granted their followers the ability to use magic without Her knowledge or approval. These individuals are shielded from Os’thenta’s gaze by the power of the Demons guiding them, thus she cannot do anything to prevent them from helping their followers from quickly using and mastering the magical arts.
There are many, many types of magic usable by mortal creatures thanks to Os’thenta. I will list currently the types of magic I know of/approve of, and if anyone suggests further types of magic to add to the list I will at least consider it. But please do not attempt to add to this list on your own. You do not have my permission to do that.
Elemental Magics
The Elemental Magics are the most common forms of magic utilized by mortals, and they include (in no particular order):
* Fire
* Water
* Air
* Earth
* Lightning
* Light
* Darkness
Light and Darkness Magic are the two most powerful elemental forms. Beneath them lies Lightning, and the four other basic elements are roughly equivalent to one another beneath Lightning Magic.
Healing Magics
There are two types of Healing Magics, and they are as follows:
* Mending
* Soul Magic
Mending is the more commonly used form of Healing Magic by far. Soul Magic is so rare that, currently, no Soul Magic user exists. One did several generations ago, but never again has the world seen a Soul Magic user.
Mending Magic grants the user the ability to control the flow of blood of the target, close their sounds, reset bones, restore bones, restore lost tissue, restore damaged organs, etc. Healing in every way you can think of essentially.
Soul Magic, as a form of Healing Magic, grants the ability of the user to cleanse the soul of anyone who has been corrupted by dark forces. And with the rise of dark forces and dark magics being used for nefarious purposes, the world will soon wish it had one such magical practitioner. Alas, the world will have to make due without it.
Summoning Magic
Summoning Magics are Magics used to summon spirit familiars from a mysterious alternate dimension. The familiars in question choose their Summoner, not the other way around. And there is no way to determine what your familiar will be.
Familiars, dependent upon what creature they are, can be either incredibly helpful or incredibly powerful. Even the smallest familiar, despite not having physical strength, can distract, search, and fight to protect its owner.
Familiars can possess magic, but their magical prowess is determined largely by the prowess of their Summoner.
The familiars are not always creatures of the Mortal Realm either. Instances of strange and unidentified creatures never before seen by humanoid eyes have been Summoned in the past.
Circle Magic
Circle Magic are magics which focus on the creation of magic circles which create and make use of a myriad of effects. Sometimes they're traps, sometimes attacks. Sometimes they're distractions, sometimes shields.
The limits of Circle Magics are determined by the skill and imagination of their users.
The trade off is that, for all of their versatility, they are comparatively weak to their purer counterparts.
Seid Magic
Said Magic is very similar to Lyric Magic in that it is magic which makes use of the voice as the catalyst. It is useable only by High Elves, and is taught only to those of the High Elven Noble Class as it is a very powerful and very time honored form of magic which must remain pure in its use.
Culturally, Seid Magic is used exclusively by females as males typically make use of another form of vocal magic known as Hiel Magic. The difference between the two is that Seid Magic, sung by females, is almost exclusively offensive in nature while Hiel Magic, sung by males, is almost exclusively defensive in nature.
