It was morning of graduation day at the Dauntless Compound, in fact it was the morning of graduation day in all the factions areas, where initiates would find out if they had passed their initiation and would become full members of their chosen faction. Bright and early everyone was told to get up and prepare, to put on their best clothes for the occasion (in Dauntless this consisted of hardy, black and red attire) and to meet in the large Dauntless compound hall near the chasm. It was common for the trainers to take the initiates on a vigorous run, and to get them warmed up for the occasion, to make them look like Dauntless members, in the hopes that they would pass, and so they had done. Phillip and Bloom had taken the initiates on an early jog round the compound, ending it with the jump into the net, where Charlie stood waiting and motioning for the initiates to hop off before the next person landed on them. It was an exciting time, giggles and whispers and high energy floated around the group, it seemed like a wonderful dream come true for most of them. Of course, not everyone was attending today, or rather not attending as they usually would. Maverick had gone MIA again, and Ghost was still unemployed and recovering from his run in with Jeremy Daniels, and was desperately trying to avoid the man. There were whispers that he would attend graduation, but if he got caught then it was possible he would be a dead man. Charlie wouldn't say a word on the matter, even though it was heavily suspected that she was the one caring for him while he was recovering. Led by Phillip and Bloom, the initiates finally made their way to the hall, and it was lit up with bright lights and the sound of the water falling into the chasm, three familiar looking people stood at the top of the staircase looking down at the small pool of initiates, and in front of them was a drop down screen that was soon to show the names of those who had passed. The three people were Jeremy Daniels, Obadiah Parks, and Mr Avalon, the three joint leaders of Dauntless. As the whispers and people calmed down and became quiet, the voices of the three men spoke out.
"You have worked hard to make it to this day! Dauntless is about to welcome its newest members! Let's hear a roar from those who are waiting to welcome their new brothers and sisters!" Yelled Jeremy into a seemingly invisible microphone that boomed within the hall. Immediately a cheer so loud that it deafened the waterfall itself erupted, applause and screams and yelling could be heard by the onlookers, familiar faces, family, friends. The initiates faces beamed with excitement as they heard their names screamed out by loved ones. It took a while for the echo and the screams of cheer to die down but eventually it did, and the next person's voice called out.
"We know this initiation has been strange, but we are excited to show you who will be the next Dauntless members, please look to the screen and look for your name, if it is not on there, then you have failed, and we don't want to see you in here anymore." Obadiah's voice called out, his eyes searching the initiates from all the way up where he was standing. With his hand he reached out, and holding some type of advice he clicked a button and the screen lit up, bright names flickered on like lightbulbs and there was silence for a second before people began to cheer with delight as they found their names. Initiates holding back tears and jumping up and down, family members screaming with delight. There were only one or two names that didn't make the list this year, as the initiate pool had dropped dramatically from the beginning due to so many deaths and failures early on, those who didn't make the whole way through were few and far between, namely Leah and another boy named Nixom, they had dropped off the edge of initiation in the last week or so and unfortunately hadn't been able to recover from those scores. They disappeared into the crowd within seconds.
"We welcome you! There is a banquet of food and alcohol waiting, a DJ to play music and then we will be coming to talk to you intiiates about your new careers! Those of you who have done the best will be offered the best. Now go enjoy yourself and..." Mr Avalon had not even finished his sentence when suddenly there was a noise that broke over the crowd and the chasm. A loud thunderous noise that shook the ground and building, it stopped, and then another took its place, even louder and larger than the last, and this time the shaking was so strong that many people fell over and were struggling to stand. The three leaders looked at each other and quickly began to call people on their phones to figure out what was going on, but they didn't even need to, as suddenly an alarm that had never been heard began screaming through the compound, so loud in fact that it was impossible to speak over it. A red light began blaringly flashing, and then that's when the worst of the thunderous earthquakes happened.
As screams began to erupt and people were trying to figure out what to do, a large chunk of the staircase began to fall into the chasm. Obadiah and Jeremy were able to jump out of the way but Mr Avalon wasn't so lucky, as his body slipped on the surface and followed the broken staircase into the chasm. Then, as people stared with wide opened mouths, the roof of the compound began to crack, large cracks that split open the roof and began to crumble down into the crowd. That's when the chaos started. People were being flattened by falling debris, some collapsing into the chasm as the whole earth began to tilt and shake. It was still so early that the sunlight was not so high in the air as to light such a dark compound up, and the lights were all out except the red flashing warning light. Darkness, earthquakes, falling debris, screaming and running people. Everyone was at a loss for what was happening, but they all knew one thing. They needed to get out. Now.
