  • Akari KaedeTo say Akari was panicking was an understatement. She was freaking. Out. At first, she’d thought that her friends were all catching some virus—it was a reasonable explanation, after all, considering how much time they spent together. But then Izzy hadn’t come back after a few days. Neither had Sora, or Joe, or Mimi, or Matt.

    Where were they?

At least Tai hadn’t disappeared. That was probably the only thing keeping her sane right now. If she had been left all alone, she would probably have had more full-blown panic attacks than she’d already had. She’d started her adventures with the DigiDestined alone—there was no way she was going back to that.

When Akari got to school this morning, the first thing she’d done was look for Tai. Just because he hadn’t disappeared yet didn’t mean he wouldn’t. Her heart pounded faster and faster the longer it took her find him. Finally, she turned a corner and saw him, gravity-defying hair and all. Akari slumped against the wall, letting out a huge sigh of relief.

It took all her willpower not to run up to him like a little girl running to her mommy. Grabbing his sleeve in her hand, she said, “Thank goodness you’re okay! Not knowing what’s happened to the others is killing me. I just can’t believe they up and disa—“ She broke off when she saw the expression on Tai’s face. “Tai? What’s wrong?”

    Then she realized.

“Oh no. It’s Kari, isn’t it?”

Light. It wasn't an emotion, not something that an average person could ever claim to be. It was an aspect, one she never quite knew how to live up to, yet always tried her best. Her friends, the Digimon, her brother... They all deserved nothing but her best.

Initially she couldn't place the uneasy feeling that she was carrying around, like a weight settled in her chest unwilling to go away. The antics of the other cheered her up, made light of her heavy heart, yet it always came back. It was only when she started having trouble reaching some of the others that she finally realized what was causing that feeling, danger was coming around again. Yet what exactly it meant would be hard to say. Kari was going to tell Tai today, tell him about that feeling she had, tell him when she first started noticing it. Maybe he, Akari, and her could have figured something out.

Yet she never had that chance, she had just barely finished getting dressed for the day when it happened. Ready to go wake him up, as she did most mornings since he liked to sleep in far too late. Kari had almost reached the door when the ground opened up beneath her, a hand on the doorknob hadn't been enough to prevent her from falling into the depths of this abyss.

Honestly over the course of her life weird portals opening up below her was surprisingly low on her list of 'strange things'. It was practically just another Sunday, not that it was Sunday. Given the amount of portals she had seen open up for the Digimon and whatnot, it really wasn't the most shocking thing. What was, however, shocking, was the fact that this wasn't the Digital world. Or, it wasn't their Digital world. It wasn't the same place some of them had spent a great portion of their childhood, it wasn't the same one where Gatomon and the others were living.

That feeling gnawed at the pit of her chest again as she pulled herself to her feet, looking at the digivice that she had with her. If this wasn't their digital world, then was this her digivice? Was it really? The question clawed at her for a moment, before her head would suddenly whip around to look in the direction of the noise. Yet just as quickly as she turned she would end up relaxing, a soft sigh of relief slipping out when she noticed it was TK. TK? Eyebrows furrowed slightly when it really set in that apparently he was here too, that they were both among the 'missing' now.

"No, sorry I don't... Are you okay? Have you seen any of the others..?" More questioned poured into her mind but she tried to hold them back, give him time to answer them before she dove in further.

She knew him too well to trust that his alarm would do the job, when half the time he ended up knocking it off of his desk trying to shut the thing up. Yet after he had completed that routine there was no one pestering him about it, just sweet silence that could have sent him right back to sleep. The silence was infinitely more terrifying than his sisters wrath ever could have been. The moment the dots connected in his mind he was springing out of bed to go check the rest of the house.

The smell of breakfast almost saturated the apartment as he came out, their mother cooking breakfast for the two of them. Tai didn't even bother returning her 'Good morning' as he went straight to check Kari's room. Empty, with the door slightly open.

"Kari must have had something pretty important to take care of this morning, I didn't even hear her leave." Yuuko spoke, not yet suspecting that something would have been wrong... and even if she had, she knew well the role her children had played in this world. She trusted them, had faith in them, and knew they would make the right calls. No matter how much she loved them, worried about them, she would always support them. Nausea built up in Tai hearing that, because there was only one thing that could have meant. Kari never would have left without saying something.

By the time he got to school his mood hadn't improved, he hardly said a word to some of his soccer buddies. It had been hard when the others had started to disappear, but he knew they would be able to figure it out, knew that as a team the Digidestined would be able to face whatever foe was coming up. It felt different when it was his sister, and even if she was just as capable as the rest of them he could still remember her as a little girl. How sickly she had been at times, the very reason she hadn't been with them in the first place.

There were only two things that were helping him right now. The fact that he knew, knew that if she was wherever Matt was then she would be in good hands. The two may have had a relationship like fire and ice, but there was a certain respect they had for each other, and a certain kinship that came with being older brothers. The other factor helping him right now was that at least he wasn't alone, Akari's voice actually breaking him out of those thoughts as she seemed to find him.

"Yeah. I don't know when she disappeared but... she wasn't in her room this morning, and Mom didn't see her leave." His fists clenched at his sides for a moment as he spoke the words, saying them almost worse than thinking about it. The words almost made it more real.

"I wish whoever was behind this would just come out and face us." Instead of hiding, taking their friends away quietly. Cowardly. Not that there was much most of them could do without the digimon, against most of their foes anyways. The partnership between them all... At least with Akari they weren't powerless, though he would have loved to fight alongside Agumon again.

  • Akari KaedeAkari widened her eyes as Tai explained that Kari was indeed gone. She groaned, tilting her head back until she was staring at the ceiling. “They’ve got to be in the Digital World. Why else would they specifically be taken?” Realizing she was still holding fast to Tai’s sleeve, she let go and wrung her hands. “We haven’t had to go there in forever… I’m not sure we still can… but if someone’s taken Matt and the others, then there must be a way.”

Staring up at Tai, who seemed just as frustrated as she did, she said forcefully, “We will find them. We always have. And I’m definitely not letting anything take you, too. I certainly can’t rescue everybody alone.” Then she furrowed her brows. “But that does raise a question… why in the Digital World didn’t they take you first? You and Matt are the ones who have Omegamon. Or even me! I’m the one who protects you all!”

Her questions, it seemed, were to remain unanswered, because hers and Tai’s Digivices started beeping. Now, Akari didn’t normally use her Digivice or carry it around, but considering the continuing disappearances of her friends, it was the only comfort she truly had besides Tai’s presence. Confused, she pulled it out, staring at the beeping lights on the side of it. While Kari and T.K.’s Digivices had long ago changed on their previous adventure, hers and Tai’s remained the same from the first adventure. (Although she’d received hers after the main drama. Stupid Gennai, being weird.)

She was about to ask what Tai thought of the Digivice freaking out when a voice started crackling out of it. The other students in the hallway didn’t seem to notice this, but it nonetheless caused Akari to clutch it tighter.

    It was Matt’s voice.

“Hello… can… hear… we’re… Digital… trapped… others… fine… help… don’t… who… took…” There were words missing, but Akari got the gist: Matt was with the others, and they were indeed in the Digital World. But they didn’t know who’d taken them.

    It was mystery after mystery.

The Digivice went silent, and Akari sighed. “They’re safe, at least. But it looks like we’re definitely going back to the Digital World.”
