Dice Roleplay

Capricornus

I'm your dead girl walking
Hi hi!

I know this question has already been asked a few times , but I still don't to really get it.

HOW exactly does a Dice Roleplay work?

I already did search for some threads asking the same question and read through it and all, but I just seem to don't understand how it really works.

Would somebody be so nice and enlighten me with some examples?

Thanks in advance! :3

Grey makes awesome tutorials, as you can see. ( ;) ) If you come up with any questions after reading those, though, feel free to ask! In the meantime...
Anything you like. D&D is just one of the literally dozens and dozens of dice-based tabletop roleplay games out there, all of which are perfectly acceptable here (as long as the general RpN rules are followed, of course). Or, if you'd rather, create your own system or adapt one of the published ones to your purposes. The only limitation is finding a game to play in or players to join your game.

Basically, it works much the same as non-dice, except that dice are used to randomize certain events (such as skill success or combat), and there's generally a pre-set rules system that everyone knows to follow from the start of the game. The easiest way is to make a post and then use the dice roller after you submit the post.

For example:

Kaerri is playing in a D&D game where the party is currently in combat, and it's her character's turn. She decides her character is going to swing on the bad guy, and types up a short but descriptive post to let the GM and her fellow players know what her character is doing, and how. Then she hits Post Reply and waits for her post to load. Once it does, she looks to the bottom right of her post for the Roll Dice button, which she clicks on to bring up the following popup:

This being D&D, Kaerri leaves the dice roller on the Regular Roll tab, types in a brief description ("1st attack"), changes number of dice to 1, and faces (sides) to 20, for a single roll of a 20-sided die. She also adds her attack modifier. Finally, she hits Roll, and watches the result get added to her post.
Note that filling in the "Throwing a die for..." blank can be pretty important if you've got multiple rolls in one post (as Kaerri will if she hits and has to roll for damage), because you'll need something different in that blank for each roll or the dice roller thinks you're just repeating yourself.

Also, the other tab (Exalted Roll) is designed specifically for the Exalted system, although other White Wolf-style games such as World of Darkness can also use it without trouble.

Some GMs and players have a particular format they want you to use; some don't. I like to use tabs and separate IC from OOC, and edit the post to move the dice rolls into the OOC tab, but that's just me.

Not from RpN itself. If you want to join an existing game, the GM/storyteller will probably have criteria that you or your proposed character will have to meet. If you want to create a game, all you have to do is pick (or create) your system, get the game itself set up, and find players. Note that the Dice RP forum is not an interest-check forum, and posts that are made for the sole purpose of recruiting players will be removed and you may get a warning for it. RpN has a forum specifically for interest checks, and all recruiting should be done there (or in conversations, if you're doing it by invite-only).
And a WHOLE forum filled with dice roleplays that you can read at your leisure:

Good luck! ( :) )

Thank you very much! I've only signed up yesterday so I still have some problems finding my way around here :3

Thanks again :D
