Fantasy [Detailed] Witches, Zombies, and Queens, oh my!

Not sure what I'd call that but certainly seems good to me ^^ Early industrial 1800 perhaps? Early Victorian? But with a past history with a Matriarchy in place and of course all the technology and industry has bee influenced by magic! At any rate I can certainly think of a character to fit, oddly had mind set on coach driver of late xD

Let's see...

Around the time period Steampunk is usually placed, is European Victorian era. We could say it's right before an industrialization boom, so metalsmiths would be more important and factories would be kinda out. Because of the magic within the word, it could be that it assists steam and replaces electricity (in which around this time period would be relatively new thing. But having illuminating magic would have probably been common). Pre-vaccination and pre-penicillin would mean that they were still into old remedies and that if you got sick, you were pretty much doomed. Things like Tuberculosis and other major sicknesses would have probably been considered Blight possessions.

Trains and airships probably run by steam and magics. Guns would probably be like the very first types that only have gunpowder, so they would be horribly inaccurate and very very expensive.

Mining, smelting, forging, metalworks and other things would probably be highly valued, as well as enchanting and possible etching (embedding items with magical seals to help channel magics and whatnot)

BLESS YOUR IMMORTAL SOUL

I really wanted high fantasy, but once I realized crystals could be an alternate form of energy, I thought it would be too good to pass up - but I still want some high fantasy elements like more melee weapons, homeopathic medicine, and just an overall lower level of technology.

@Larry

Of course! I think it would be amusing to see him try to recruit other guys into his movement without the Queen noticing a stack of fliers hidden in his coat.

@Valmont

.... Is your name, perchance, a Jackie Chan Adventures reference?

All that haha As for firearms though I'd argue that they would be moderately common from a military stand point after all the Victorian era was one of expansion in regards to the British Empire. After all to my knowledge we had (very early) firearms as early as the War of The Roses (England, 1455) granted they were rare then of course. So would it be so odd for them to be available in this 'later' setting? Not by the crate load to civilians of course but still.

@welian

...and yes it is xD a shameless love from my childhood I'm afraid along side hammer horror and toho godzilla

So... does that mean Anna can be a manizer, considering sexism is backwards in this world. She can tell men to "GET BACK IN THE KITCHEN AND GET ME SOME CHOCOLATE."

Haha can't see why not, hell you can be like that in the real world too :P Its just way of thinking at the end of day

Indubitably.

At this point I'm simply waiting for @welian to post the thread so I can start devouring every piece of information there, considering how interesting an idea this is and how in-depth she has likely gone, or could go.

Also, did you know that this is a grammatically correct sentence:

Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo
Paraphrased, the sentence means, "Bison from Buffalo, that bison from Buffalo bully, themselves bully bison from Buffalo."

Ahh, my apologize. I maay have gotten my timelines mixed up with that one. :/

Honestly I'm not the biggest Victorian Era buff. xD ;;

So technically, firearms would be available. But if she wanted to keep the high fantasy of it all, I think they'd have to be severely limited so that melee weapons were the main.

Hey everyone! Just to get a better idea of what kind of cast I'll be working with, I'd like you to go to this Google Form I made, and fill out this short little questionnaire. It's all multiple choice (except for username), so it shouldn't take but a minute.

I must confess my knowledge is rather limited a mix of English medieval history and a English degree I know more about the books of the Victorian age more so than the actual era haha so please no need to apologies :P Was just a point of debate ^^ As for high fantasy I must say I don't encounter it often and so wondering would the setting be disturbed with the presence of say 'flintlocks' for example. How so? I'm curious as I want understand the setting better ^^

@welian

Done the form to clarify was thinking a personal coachmen/henchmen style chap serving one the witches or someone of noble birth perhaps. Could easily be a warden of course whatever fits ^^

High fantasy would not be disturbed by flintlocks, I think... At least, not this one.

Anyways, as I understand high fantasy, it is a genre marked by adventure, the Hero's Journey, and a greater/overarching conflict between good and evil - after Lord of the Rings and Dungeons & Dragons, high fantasy became shorthand for "medieval fantasy".

Steampunk and other "-punk" genres, in contrast, revolve around a sense of social revolution, man's relationship to technology, and frequently something called "transhumanism" which, I am told means "to be more than mere human". It's frequently used as shorthand for "shit-ton of brass and gears and Victorian Edwardian fashion", though the details change with cyberpunk (future), dieselpunk, biopunk, atompunk, dungeonpunk...

There is a genre called "Low Fantasy", I don't recall what it consists of off the top of my head, but I do know that it lacks the romantic, epic ambiance of High Fantasy, and tends to run a little close to, say, Noir.

@welian

AAaaahhhhhhh thank you! Aware of the stuff you mentioned just no ones really put into full context like that ^^ gives me a better idea of what to expect and what mind set to create a character with so to speak.
