The Not-So-Rottenfuhrer
After having been shot down over Fascist Italy in World War II, a P-40 KittyHawk pilot speaks to the mother of a Samaritan Italian woman who selflessly volunteered to keep Lucas safe while his passage out of Italy was secured. This statement comes shortly after the mother, Mrs. Marino, asks Lucas what his plans would be after getting out of Italy. After a short moment, this is what Lucas says:
"Well, I've always liked the idea of joining the Army and fighting for one's nation. I figured that there will always be a rich man's war to fight and there'll always be poor people to fight for him. I'd rather have devoted and dedicated people fighting my nation's wars than some of the draftees that have hit the beaches in Sicily - poor fellows. I guess that if there's anything I can do to put one less soul in danger, I might as well do it. So in answer to your question, I'll be back. If I get back, there'll be another beach to land at, another city to liberate, another train station to destroy." Lucas paused, knowing that what he was saying wasn't necessarily wrong but was certainly no uplifting answer to Mrs. Marino's question, "And when your government surrenders, there'll be the Nazis whose beaches we'll invade, cities we'll liberate, and trains we'll destroy. And if those Japanese fellows are still around? I'm sure I'll end up fighting them too.
And when this second great war, this second war to 'end all wars' is over, there'll be another enemy, another beach, another city, and another train station. I guess you could say that so long as two people exist on this Earth, one will do anything to kill the other. That's just human nature, I guess."
I'd love to speak with whoever would be willing to share their opinion on this idea.
Also, big thanks to @Hoki for joining this 1x1 and putting up with me and my odd character.
