Nexus
The world of Nexus has become a battleground for the forces of Light and Darkness. Through the Eras there have been victories for both sides. The most recent period that just came to an end was the Era of Madness. The Dark Lord has been slain and the Forces of Light have withdrawn back to the various nations they come from to recuperate. Celebrations go strong for none know what the Dark Lord did in his final moments to spite those who would kill him. There are countless cultures, peoples and races out in Nexus, some benefitting from its position in the Planes as a major crossroads.
Mountains of Madness
An impressive range of mountains spanning the heart of the continent, creating a vast natural border that generally prevented major territorial conflicts from the nations surrounding it. The Mountains have always had a dark reputation. Efforts to mine there while profitable eventually fall to some folly or grim fate. Orcs, Ogres and other dark beings build holds in the range, coming down to raid, slaughter and plunder before withdrawing back to the safety of the ranges. The Dwarves attempted to build Deep Roads to bypass the range but those roads have all fallen silent. High Roads have been carved through the Mountains. This was done by the Dark Lord himself but also nations wanting to trade. The High Roads only hold due to garrisons, forts and patrols keeping them safe.
Mad Bastion
The hold of the Dark Lord who reigned in the Era of Madness. It was built by the various tribes and hordes of the Mountains of Madness whom the Dark Lord had been influencing or controlling to build his power. It is a vast, intimidating sight even today with little hints of it going away. The Forces of Light have elected to turn the Mad Bastion into a prison, sealing away the most foul and dangerous beings inside that they capture. There are debates on tearing it down, hoping that doing so will destroy the Mad Maze, but many point out that no one knows how to destroy the enchanted stone. The Mad Bastion only fell before because its gates were thrown open by invading adventurers, allowing the Armies of Light to surge in at great cost to overwhelm the sinister fortress. There are rumors that there is still much to plunder from the Mad Bastion; treasures and knowledge hoarded by the Dark Lord in his endless campaign of conquest.
Mad Maze
The twisting, shifting innards of the Mountains of Madness, contaminated by the dark essence of the Mad Bastion. The Mad Maze constantly shifts and changes, even opening gateways to other planes, allowing one to cross over from either side. One can never truly map the Mad Maze, only understand it enough to navigate it. The Dark Scions have the ability to navigate the Maze, more so their Dungeons can stabilize the area around them into useful zones for mining and working to build their dark forces.

The Dark Lord
A powerful mage whose name is long forgotten. He embraced the Darkness as Madness and built his stronghold in the Mountains of Madness as part of this. The Mad Bastion was a place overflowing with the powers of Darkness, seeping into the very stone and earth, creating the twisting and shifting underground known at the Mad Maze. The Dark Lord gathered followers to his banner, preparing a campaign of conquest and reality shattering alterations to Nexus. This was thwarted by the many peoples of Nexus rallying against him, attacking the Mad Bastion while Adventurers risked the Mad Maze and breached the fortress.
The Adventurers distracted and brought the Dark Lord low, slaying him. Without his will guiding the Darkness, the Mad Bastion was taken and its armies slaughtered or sent fleeing in any direction they could manage. None know the Dark Lord shattered his own essence in the hopes that this new Era will be dominated by those whom he has empowered.
Dark Scions
Each of you has become a Dark Scion, bound to a Shard created from the Dark Lord himself. You can feel the Darkness tugging at you, offering you whispers of power and influence. You hold the potential to become a new Dark Lord, each a seed planted with that potential. This world may even come to face more than one considering what the Dark Lord willingly did in his final moments. You have been empowered by an ultimate act of spite. The Darkness calls and guides you. Will you heed the call or attempt to carve your own path with the power you begin to gather?
Powers
The Light
A source of Order and Justice, the Light empowers various gods and beings that pull from it. It stands in perpetual opposition to the Darkness. The Light seeks to uplift all it can, to inspire creation and the spreading of ideas. The Light however can be overbearing at times, inspiring more extreme responses including Inquisitions and Crusades. The Light at this time has moved to encourage rebuilding and reforging of society and lives. The current Era is called the Era of Light due to the recent downfall of the Dark Lord, his forces scattered to the winds or slaughtered.
The Darkness
A source of Chaos and Corruption, the Darkness is a source that rewards those who tap into it even as it tries to drive them to greater acts of evil. It is seductive in nature, always prepared to help those who would listen because inevitably it will try to draw them in too deep. The Dark Lord was the greatest servant of the Darkness, but his passing has left the Darkness without its champion. Many beings are drawn to the Darkness and will serve the Dark Scions if enticed or conquered.
The Gods
The Gods of Nexus are various, aligned to the Light or Darkness even as a rare few tap into both to uphold semblance of balance. The Gods of Light are generally the patrons of the major civilizations or concepts that hold the people’s of the Surface together. Where they cannot stop war between these nations, they attempt to at least ensure war is honorable with understood limits. The Dark Gods reign in the Underdark, inspiring power struggles and vicious rivalries so that the denizens of these dark lands become powerful by weeding out the weak. These two pantheons clash and whisper into the other domain, creating paragons of their ideals to attempt to cause change. Two Gods stand in Balance attempting to prevent the world falling too far into either spectrum.
Gaia, The World Mother
Gaia is the spirit of Nexus, the upholder of natural forces. She stands between Light and Darkness, knowing both create something greater. Nature is indiscriminate even as it holds Order and Chaos together. Imbalance is undesirable to her for it creates damage to ecosystems. Too much Light can make a desert. Too much Darkness can create unwanted rot and blight.
Magus, The Mana Flow
Magus is the God of Magic, the supporter of all that creates and destroys by it. Magic is part of the world, fed by the very essence of the peoples on Nexus and beyond. Magus generally stands back, watching and teaching, allowing the Balance to handle itself. He has concerns that the loss of the Dark Lord could upset things, yet has not acted. Some wonder if Magus knows more than he is telling.
