  This world is a strange and wonderful place. Magic is all around us yet the humans are too afraid to see it and thus they only look for it in the most peculiar of places. They are drawn to us like moths to a flame and we perform in order to survive. We bring magic and wonder into their lives in a way that keeps us from ever being truly seen by them, in a way that makes us invisible. We are the Dark Star Circus. This family of myths and monsters survives in a world that would never accept us by sticking together and making our magic an act. Those who hunt us struggle to see us past the wave of disbelievers but our magic is stronger than ever and as our family grows so too does our power bloom. Together we survive, together we thrive, and it is together that we will live to see a new tomorrow in a world that wishes us dead.
  
  Plot:
  Our characters are members of The Dark Star Circus and Fairgrounds, a group of mythical beings who disguise themselves as a traveling circus group in order to survive. This thread follows their day to day lives, struggles, and dangers as they are hunted and still going through with performances in order to keep their existence undercover in plain sight. The group is lead by the witch Kenna Alaura who has used her magic to give them human passing forms and to quell their most primal instincts but she can only protect them so much from themselves and others. Will hunters descend on the gathered monsters? Will they fall apart from the inside out? What treachery lies within?

  1. Please listen to the thread owner. Whether it be asking you to change something or enforcing a rule, my word is final and I would appreciate it if you didn't fight me.
  2. Please do not attempt to claim a magical creature already being used unless given special permission by the rper who has claimed it! Duplicates are only acceptable if approved by both the original rper and the thread owner!
  3. You may have as many characters as you like so long as genders are kept even and you can handle the amount of characters you decide to have. If you slack with posts I will require characters to be removed from the rp!
  4. Keep Powers/Abilities reasonably leveled. Be sure to give it some sort of weakness. Myths and monsters always have a weakness and they will have them in this thread. NO ONE is immune to everything.
  5. Please keep face claims realistic and respectful. I understand using art to show the magic form of characters but ALL characters have a human form in order to be apart of the circus.
  6. Any large plots or minor plots that have to do with the larger plot must be run past me. Small personal plots that have little to do with the larger plot can stay between rpers.
  7. This will be an advanced RP so please be sure to write at least 3 paragraphs per character.
  8. As we want to keep this thread alive, you'll be expected to post at least every 2 weeks. If you haven't posted in that time, we will have to kick you.
  9. We are looking to have characters be in their 20s and 30s, so like young adults. Mythical creatures can of course be waaaaaay older in age but their face claims should be younger in order to give off the effect the circus would desire to present.
  10. If I feel uncomfortable with a power, situation, creature, or ability and ask you to change it, please do so without arguing.
  11. Please follow all RPN rules. No discrimination of any kind will be tolerated.

  History:
  Sakari grew up in a small Alaskan town with her jinn mother, Emani, and native human father, Ataneq. A mixture of jinn and humans, the town of Puyuq’tungtu makes up a population of a whopping twenty-three permanent residents. During her childhood years, she was raised alongside the two other jinn youngsters and the six human children of the town. They all lived together peacefully, a town and tribe of one family. When her powers began to show themselves, her mother told her an old story. It was one she’d heard the jinn elders of their village tell many times before, but this version was a little different. More personal.
  Many, many years before Sakari was born and even longer before her mother had met her father, Emani was once married to a very powerful jinn named Ashay Hitkar. He was once the great leader and protector of the Jinn people and Emani had loved him very much, even having a son with him, but he eventually made the choice to give his life during the war for their freedom from the great Pixies and Dragons who had ruled over the main Jinn clan hundreds of years ago. The war then finally ended with the Phoenix King at the time enforcing upon his allies a declaration in favor of the freedom of all Jinn, seeing how the death of Ashay himself had pushed the Jinn farther than they should have been. With her blessing and pride, Emani watched as the son she and Ashay had raised together before his passing followed in his late father’s footsteps to lead their clan into a new era. He was born for it, making their people proud.
  Knowing her son would be alright on his own, Emani left her homelands. Spending decades on the road and in various countries before finding solace in the open arms of the secluded tribes of Alaska, it took her a while to accept the loss of her husband and process all she’d experienced before the aftermath of the war. While she never fully could get past all that happened, she soon found new happiness with a human man, Ataneq.
  Sakari was taught by the jinn elders that everyone should be treated equally, no matter how different they are. Even humans. Her own father and their tribe was proof of that. With his unconditional love and trust, he never wavered in his confidence that all peoples have the potential for good. He repeated this to her over and over: The past is the past and everyone is capable of change, of love. Whether you’re a jinn or a human. Even a pixie, a dragon, a hunter, or other. Even if her mother didn’t share the same sentiment. No, her mother was always warning her of the dangers of the outside world and to be wary who you give your trust, having seen far too much and wanting to shield her daughter from that pain. From the world outside the safe little village she'd found.
  And it was after a conversation with her mother quickly became an argument and very suddenly, nearly turned into an all-out fight, that Sakari left. Not a word to anyone, just a note. She needed to get away. She loved her home and her tribe, her parents, but she needed to leave that place. There were some things she wanted to do, to see. The world outside of her small, arctic town surely had to have the answers she wanted.

  History:
  Chiltook and their siblings were the incidental creation of a middle-aged elven man named Bahumus Maanari, a great and powerful mage. Chi grew up with their three siblings under the rather reluctant care of their creator and master. They lived in a very refined, pristine house within a secluded part of a forest, neighboring elves being not too far away throughout the wood. They were given many chores around the large house and grand garden to tend to make themselves all useful, though the young slimes didn’t seem to mind the hard work much. It was almost fun for Chi and their siblings, all the cleaning, baking, cleaning, weeding, cleaning, cooking, cleaning, helping in the lab. More cleaning. Lots of made-up competitions and games were created and won and lost between the four of them as they worked. But lots of trouble_ was created for them, too.
  Many times by their master they were called such terms as, ‘unfortunate accidents,’ ‘useless gunk,’ ‘insufferable parasites,’ ‘cribraria slugs,’ and so on. Punished, too, if there was a single speck of dust, grime, or trash on the premises, or for following a recipe incorrectly, disturbing guests, or were too slow to help him in his laboratory. Most nights, they were made to sleep out in the garden, cold, exhausted, and defeated. Not only were they insulted and yelled at constantly by their master, they were the butt of many jokes made by the man’s ‘friends’ and colleagues who visited their home. They were an embarrassment to the man’s reputation, an incidental spawning from a failed magical experiment on plant life. Their creator had merely missed spotting the small living globs of slime mold on his experiment in his excitement to produce more results based on his research. His colleagues didn’t let Maanari live it down and so he never gave his young wards a break in turn, taking out his embarrassment and frustration at his own failure onto them. His worst_ creations. A wasted use of his magical abilities and resources.
  But… It wasn’t all bad though. He wasn’t particularly cruel._ He didn’t go out of his way to berate them and never raised a hand to them. Harsh, sure, they’d describe him, and extremely strict, with a very bad temper. But Chiltook had their three amazing siblings to keep company, a safe place to stay, a master that cared for them (reluctantly and ruefully so as he did), and that was enough. They had all they needed.
  As the four grew over the years, too, becoming more independent as young adults and learning to anticipate what their master expected of them in house, doing their best to go beyond that to earn his favor, the man seemed to soften a bit. They were allowed to sleep indoors more, learned to take on more humanoid shapes with his guidance and trial and error, watch him work in his lab more often, even leaving their property to attend a few soirees that weren’t_ hosted at their own house. He almost seemed to become proud_ of them, still ever stern, but almost… fatherly to them as they matured and he grew accustomed to them. As he grew to understand them more as people rather than his failure, a mistake, or the common pest that slimes are known to be. It took time, but they’d become closer, stronger, a real family.
  And then, in one night, everything changed.
  Loud banging on the front door, then a crash downstairs. A break-in, the intruder caught quickly by the four slimes as they awaited their master to descend from his bedroom on the top floor. A man. Elven, like anyone else here in their small forest neighborhood. He didn’t resist them, surrendering quickly, just kept repeating the same thing over and over, but it didn’t make sense. ‘Humans are attacking! We have to evacuate! Humans are attacking!’ Chiltook and their siblings had no idea what he meant. What are humans? What does evacuate mean? Then there was a loud boom_ and white, fiery light filled their vision.
  The next thing Chiltook knew, they were being yelled at and shaken aggressively, blinking awake to a younger elven face looking down at them. Then they were being helped up and pulled along hurriedly, only able to take in flashes of the rubble and smoke of the ruins and forest around them. That night became a blur, memories scrambled far in their head, too much to see and hear, too much to remember. They slept a lot those next few days.
  All that mattered after then was that they were safe with their new companion, away from there. Master Maanari and their siblings weren’t with them, but surely they all were somewhere safe, too. Wherever they were. She assured them that most everyone from their neighborwood had managed to escape and scatter safely, that everyone would keep apart for a while until they could locate and regroup together in another secluded forest. It happened often, she said, the relocation. Repeated every so many years. Sometimes before the humans found them, sometimes too late.
  Aleiga was her name, the young elven woman. Chiltook had never met her before, but she’d saved them from the humans and they owed her that much now. They’d stay with her as long as she needed, as long as they had to, until they could both regroup with their families again in the future.

  Personality: Yuri is an absolute sweetheart. He's incredibly sociable and tends to get along with everyone he meets, though he can be a bit much for introverts at first. He can be reckless with himself and mischievous in all the best ways, it's sort of in his nature after all. He's a feel good kind of guy and enjoys a lively atmosphere, making him a perfect fit for circus life. He's an absolute charmer when he wants to be, often citing his cute face and dimples as his ticket out of trouble. He prefers to just go with the flow and tends to literally go wherever he feels like, whenever he feels like it. It's nearly impossible to keep this guy down. For all his relaxed mannerisms, he has absolutely 0 tolerance for harassment and isn't afraid to do something about it when he sees it. He's a tease in the most dad way as possible. If he catches wind of a crush you have, he's giving you hell for it. 'I don't know, can you?' is one of his absolute favorite lines. He's notorious for his pranks, though he is respectful of wishes should you tell him to knock it off. For all of his mischief, he goes above and beyond for his friends. He gives some of the best comfort out there and he's ready to give it at any time of the day. You wouldn't think there's much thought behind those eyes, but he has an awful tendency to overthink when left alone for too long. He does enjoy philosophizing with others though, dreaming of a world with less problems than the one they have.

  History: Yuri's family had always been the protectors of their troupe, a job they held with high honor. Protecting against natural predators, managing the after math of severe storms, or even fighting against invading troupes on the rare occasions all fell under their jurisdiction. His older siblings were more than happy to take up the mantle of several generations, but Yuri was hesitant. It wasn't that he couldn't fight or even that he didn't want to. He loved his people dearly, but their world had been changing long before he'd ever been born. With the growth of humanity and the masses of land being repurposed for their housing, his troupe found themselves having to move. Once would have been fine, twice a bit of a hassle, but once every 30 years? It was demoralizing to say the least. Their focus became less about protecting what they had and more about trying to keep everyone together as they moved. What was the point of trying to settle when they would forfeit their homes so easily? Why not confront the humans or, even better, try to find an understanding with them? Why when discussions of a solution began to stir did no one want to take action? His family grew weary, the once proud warriors simply finding contentment in their new reality.
  
  This should have made him resent humans, should have made him upset with his family for being so passive about it. For a while, he did. But as the world grew and changed, his natural curiosity began ticking away at that resentment. He wanted to see the world they shut out, to see what was so special they needed the land that had once belonged to his people. His family understood, they had experienced their fair share of adventures and understood the allure of something new. Something hopeful. And so, he took off with their well wishes. For a while he kept to the small sections of woods close to suburbs. He'd play tricks on the local youth who felt brave enough to venture into his territory while he observed this strange, new way of life. Not long after, the Dark Star Circus came to town. Originally, he hadn't paid it much mind. Circuses were no new concept to him, and the idea of a human run circus didn't sound spectacular. Still, he couldn't deny his curiosity when he overheard a couple of teenagers raving about how "magical" it was. With nothing better to do, he went to investigate for himself. He could feel the difference, the real magic this circus had that he hadn't found anywhere else. It felt like home, or somewhere he might like to call home. It didn't take long for Kenna to find him and make him a deal he delighted in accepting.

She doesn't get even when she's been seriously wronged, she doesn't stop until she's destroyed the offender's soul. she's reigned in her temper over the years, though it still spikes on occasion when safety is ignored. As scary and serious as she can be, there is a hidden sweetness to her that really only comes out around those she cares for. She's fiercely protective and stubborn to no end. She spoils her friends whenever she gets the chance. All she could ever ask for is a safe, peaceful existence with their little band of misfits, though that dream is on hold... For the moment. She enjoys laughing and sharing stories around a bonfire. She loves to help people and bring smiles where she can.

  History: Eve spent her early life relatively close to the cave she'd been born in, as many of her kind did. Her mother left her once she could provide for herself and she really didn't feel the need to venture far. There were wood nymphs who lived nearby and they invited her over on occasion for tea and parties. Occasionally, a wanderer or adventurer would stumble into her territory and try to slay her for money. None were heard from again, though there always seemed to be another unfortunate soul just around the corner when she finally thought she'd be left in peace. Her horizons were first broadened by Ansel who, with direction from the wood nymphs, took refuge in her cave with her for a winter. The stories he told her were intriguing, though her interactions with humans had been... Less than ideal. She preferred isolation to constant attempts on her life. It wasn't until she met Kenna that the world really felt tangible to her. With the witch by her side, the world of humans could be her oyster. Her wonderful company was certainly an added bonus. She barely remembers what life was like before, in a cramped cave with nowhere else to go, but that doesn't particularly bother her. She's found a new home filled with love.   Personality: Moira can be a bit of a recluse, though she's learned how to be approachable despite her distant mannerisms. Death basically destroyed what social skills she did have, which has made relearning them a bit difficult. It doesn't help that she has a slight fear of getting close to those who are still relatively easy to kill. Regardless, her loyalty to her new family is strong. She's not sure if she can die again, but she would for any of them. She can be a bit of an adrenaline junkie, chasing experiences and thrills she'd only dreamed of in life. This tends to make her a busy body and she's really only content when she has something to do. She's very straight forward and honest, at least when she feels like speaking. She enjoys listening, though she will answer when spoken to or during a group discussion. While she's typically on the quiet side, she's definitely not shy and will voice her ideas. Due to her abilities, she's very empathetic and hypersensitive to sadness. It's very easy to get her to cry, so she advises others to find comfort from anyone else. In general, Moira has come to resent the woman she was; A naive house wife who wanted so desperately to keep people close that she'd ignore red flags and hide the parts of her she feared wouldn't be liked. She thrives on the fact she'd be unrecognizable to her old friends and husband while taking comfort in knowing that her family had always seen who she really was. Who she is today.

  In life, Moira suffered from a chronic but manageable illness. Given the times she lived in, many thought it a miracle she had survived to maturity. Her family took care of her without complaint and they made living almost normal all things considered. She still did chores around the house, all be it low effort ones, and she even had a few friends who would come over to make clothes and chat together. She married at age 19 after meeting a kind man at a wake for one of her neighbors. Liam was wonderful for the first few years, he seemed completely devoted to her and their marriage. He'd help her as needed on his off days and left her in her sister's care when he went to work. Around the four year mark, he started to become distant. He'd spend more time out with friends, which she didn't mind at first, and seemed to avoid their home like the plague. She hosted more get togethers for her own friends and family, so it wasn't nearly as miserable as it could have been... Even when he stopped coming home at night. She held faith in him despite it all, hoping it was just a stint he'd come out of. 6 moths later, he'd finally come back around with dreams of having a baby together.   In the summer of her 24th year, Moira managed to give birth to a baby girl. Annie. She'd all but died during the process, but both of them had come out in one piece. The midwife warned her that the baby's chances of survival were slim, given her own condition and some concerning signs she'd noticed in passing. Just as she'd predicted, Annie died at 5 months old. Moira, struggling to bounce back after the toll birth had taken on her, only worsened with grief. Her brothers and sisters took turns looking after her while Liam drank away his problems. They celebrated her birthday that winter, and she seemed to be perking up just a little bit. Despite this, her husband had other ideas. He asked her family to step out so he could give her his gift in private. He made her some tea and offered it to her to drink while he showed the gift to her. Without even thinking, she drank the whole cup down... Just in time for him to reveal the bottle of poison he'd poured half of into her tea. She surged out of bed and screamed, alerting her family before collapsing. The last thing she heard before sinking into death was Liam's pathetic attempts to explain himself. "She just wouldn't die, I had to free myself of her! You don't know how hard it's been caring for her! And after Annie- You should be thanking me!"

That they would be more careful. Eventually, just before the start of World War I, her family had the grand idea to move to America. What she saw in the days before their departure made her cry endlessly. They would all die. Some on the boat, some during their separation from their family. Only one would survive, her baby brother's many greats grandson Elias. She followed after him, watching over his family even when he went to war. His son, John, was only two when his father died in battle. He'd seen Moira when she cried her warning a few days prior, even waved at her. It was the first time anyone had seen her since she died, had acknowledged her existence beyond the whispers of their family banshee. John fought in World War II before having a family and his mother died in the 60's. With no one left to watch over, Moira stayed near their house. Lost in sorrow from the tragedies of her family, she used her screams to run off anyone trying to buy it. Eventually, it was left to rot. Some told tales of it being haunted, though not many were brave enough to test that claim... Until Yuri caught wind of it and decided to investigate while they were in town. At first he went alone, just to see what was actually there. Moira, walking around in the rainy night, had barely paid him any mind until he started talking to her. Starting in English, he worked his way through his known languages until she seemed to understand him. She couldn't respond beyond a scream or a sob, so nodding sufficed. He asked if she was sad. She nodded. He asked if she wanted to have something more than a decrepit shack in the woods. She nodded again. He rushed off with a promise to return, something she hadn't actually thought he'd make good on until he showed up with Kenna.

  history: signe was born to wealthy mortal parents, yrsa and erik, in the eastern part of present-day sweden during the viking age. she was the second-born child with the first being her brother, sven, and the only daughter of the couple. growing up, her family was quite devoted to their worship of the norse gods. signe, herself, had always been particularly captivated by the story of the god, odin. as a child, she often made offerings (like bread, wood carvings, meat, etc.) to the god and participated in some festivities related to the nordic religion. her fascination with odin and the other gods only grew as she aged and, thus, it was no shock that the blonde pursued the role of a priestess, where she participated in more intensive, dark rituals and festivities in order to show her devotion to the gods. she never expected to become a battle-maiden of odin though.
  
  she never met a physical manifestation of odin as a mortal woman, but rather was visited by the god in a dream, where he bestowed the supernatural abilities and duties of a valkyrie to her. any other normal human being would have thought the dream to be that of the imagination. but as a priestess, signe believed dreams to carry messages and could provide means of contact with otherworldly beings. so, she had no doubt that her dream was not real when she awoke the following day. however, by accepting the god's favor, she was forced to give up her beloved family, and though it broke a piece of her soul to do so, she did. she never returned to her family either.
  
  signe spent centuries, obediently deciding the fates of warriors in battle and leading those souls to odin's hall valhalla. but after many centuries of following the god's demands, the valkyrie grew weary of the life she had brought upon herself. and, thus, signe began to plot her escape. she knew that defying odin could cost her dearly, as it had valkyries like brynhild and hjalmgunnar. she had to come up with a plan that was both strategic and perfectly timed. but after many decades went by, the blonde began to lose hope in ever escaping the clutches of the god whom she had worshipped for so long. well, that is until she heard a little rumor about a "magical" circus that had come to the town in which she had been passing through at the time. only mildly intrigued by it, signe decided to check it out. the valkyrie could practically taste the magic upon attending one of the circus's shows. as a former priestess and valkyrie, she naturally had an eye for magic. yes, the little circus that she had found by chance was her risky opportunity.
  
  personality: signe is a bit of a complicated character in the way that there are different dimensions to her personality. the valkyrie is good at playing the role that her environment demands her to in order to blend into the crowd and achieve whatever goal she may have set. in other words, the woman knows how to put on a good performance. perhaps, some might view her as deceptive behavior in a negative light but it is a survival instinct for the blonde. she also does well at combating obstacles that are thrown her way and are able to work around restrictions that might be placed on her. after all, she is quite a clever soul. while she might appear to move confidently through life, signe battles with her own inner demons—guilt from past decisions and fear of failure being among those. even so, her insecurities have not exactly stopped her from taking risks or fulfilling the duties that she must.

  {massive wip} Atlas is like a dog trapped in human form. He’s easily distracted, easily startled, and unbelievably spacey. He's innocent to a fault, making him gullible and naive; he's vulnerable to peer pressure and susceptible to being led astray. Atlas still possesses a sense of childlike wonder; he finds joy and beauty in the simplest of things. He also hates being isolated; he can't stand the feeling of loneliness. Without someone near him, Atlas feels lost and alone; he’ll start to become anxious. Therefore, he's clingy to those he loves. And, speaking of love, Atlas is undoubtedly known for his oversized heart. Love, affection, and kindness seem to radiate from him; an aura of positivity encompasses him at almost all times. Because of this, Atlas hates to see suffering, both physical and mental, so he does his best to aid others in whatever way he can. Atlas is also open about everything, as he doesn't really understand the point of secrecy.   {wip} Atlas doesn't have a biological mother or a father. Technically, he wasn't even "born" — instead, he was created by the stars. Three years ago, the stars sent dust from the heavens to Earth in the form of a human, which was then given life. However, the being wasn't given the body of a baby, but of a young adult. Imagine how concerning that sight must have been: a twenty-something man, naked, standing alone in the woods with no memories or knowledge of the world. Thankfully, Evelynn was the one to find him, discovering the celestial within minutes of his creation during a short walk around a new Circus location. By simply glancing at him, she could tell that he was not of this world. Eve escorted him back to the Circus, and upon their arrival, Kenna noticed Eve with the strange newcomer. Upon learning his true origin and his lack of a name, the two women agreed to call him Atlas and to become his mentors. Over the years, they've since given him a full name. Atlas' whole life has revolved around the Circus, and all he knows of the outside world is from the stories of the other circus performs. Since his creation, though, he has always known one thing: the stars put him on Earth for a very special reason.
