Technoshock:
When technology outstrips people's ability to comprehend or fit it into their lives. Suddenly, people freak out. They get irrational; violent. Families shatter; relationships tear apart. People feel helpless in the face of the Universe. Eventually, the whole society grids to a halt, the victim of a mass psychosis. That's what we now call the Collapse.
By the end of the 1980's, it was evident that the nation was in trouble. Most social norms had dissolved under an all engulfing wave of competing special interest groups, media fueled fads, and an overall "me first" wordlview. By 1994, the number of homeless skyrocketed to 21 million, that's 1 in every 4 Americans living on the streets. The tech revolution had further torn the economy apart, creating two radically divergent classes - a wealthy, technically oriented, materially acquisitive group, of corp pros, and a down class of homeless, unskilled, blue-collar workers. The middle class was nearly eradicated. It was this dismal beginning that led to the current American landscape of the 2000s.
In large cities, business areas are clean, neat, well lit showcases, free of crime and poverty, controlled by powerful corporations. Ringing the central areas are the Combat Zones - decrepit, squalid suburbs and burned out ghettos teeming with boostergangs and other violent sociopaths. The outer suburbs are also corporate controlled zones; safe, well-guarded tracts where executives raise their families in relative security.
In this bleak landscape is a bright light of hope. The upheavals of the last decade have unified the poor, oppressed and angry of the nation. There are signs that the gang mentality of the early 2000's is giving way to a new movement, as Rockers, Nomads, Solos and Medias take to the streets to fight authority and oppression. Far from being finished, the United States seems to be, against all odds, coming back. But only time will tell if the so-called Cyberpunk revolution will succeed.
As a Cyberpunk, you grab tech by the throat and hang on. Interface plugs in your wrists, weapons in your arms, lasers in your eyes, chipware in your brain. You have the attitude right, you've got the most "in" clothes, know the right people, and follow the right crowds. Your enemies are Corporate Armies, cyborg bike gangs, power-armoured assassins and computer wired deck jockeys. Your weapons are nerve, streetsmarts, bravado, and the Colt-AMT Model 2000 Smartgun on your hip.
Are you ready for the dark future of the 21st century? Of course you are. You can't fraggin' wait.
Standard setting in Night City, the year 2020. Expect it to be fairly dark and gritty, but I do not plan on crossing over into straight edgy or grimderp territory. The general premise is that you will be edgerunners, (Hired specialists that do odd-jobs ranging from completely legal milk-runs, to extreme international crimes) taking jobs from various fixers, corps, and the like, all the while managing the daily dramas and dilemmas that would one would face in the dark future of the 21st century. Some of it may lean to over-the-top, but for the most part it will be played fairly straight (As straight as one can play Cyberpunk)
I have made a slight few modifications to chargen, but aside from those, it's 100% normal. Only the official material for CP2020 is allowed (Except for the Firestorm Books, those are not allowed.)
It will use the standard system with a few houserules (Which can be found here: http://pastebin.com/9EWs6FBK and here: http://pastebin.com/wS1xHuV6 for the reworked drugs)
So, if anyone is interested, please, post here, let me know. I've been looking to run a Cyberpunk forever, and have LOADS of experience with the setting and system.
