Crystal Oz
Game Design and Summary
This RP is ahigh stakes cat and mouse cyber adventure with light dice work and heavy themes of corporate intrigue in a world inspired by Wizard of Oz archetypes and allusions. The themes, character types, and world are only loosely inspired by the book/movie in the same sense that some RPs will feature an underlying tarot card or Greek mythology theme. It is not intended to mirror the world of Oz in any literal sense. Other influence including noir, solarpunk, cyberpunk, Bioshock, Blade Runner, the fifth element and Mad Max. Characters are not expected to have OZ allusions, but if desired they could--Alice in Wonderland, fairy tale, nursery rhyme, and other children's literature references will earn smiles.
Players will track down the [ruby slipper] using the resources of the faction their character is aligned with. This game will have cooperative and competitive elements. The first to obtain it and figure out how to open the package and then successfully use it will win the game. This RP will have light dice work and a strong action focus. However strong characters, interactions, intrigue, well written posts, and fun are definitely still our goals. Whether the story is a fast pace blockbuster or an intense slow burn mystery drama will depend highly on the players, their characters, and our narrative wants!
The light dice engine mentioned can be found here: Engine on google doc. The enigne is an apocalypse world hack, however in implimentation the dice is much lighter than the original. The engine exists only to ensure that factions and characters can remain competitive without fear of godmoding or conflicts of interest, and to keep things exciting. Any battles, scraps, close calls, or negotiations will have to be played out in character with normal Rp etiquette!
The posting length for this RP is however long it needs to be to get the job done. I consider this project to be Lit but post length may vary drastically as I hope to encourage a lazy lit fast-paced call and response type pace dotted with longer solo missions where players and characters dictate large swath of action and plot. Instant messaging and chatlogs will also be a factor in this world so that format of rping will also be employed when necessary.
Plot
The project known as [Ruby Slipper] was ECE's latest, greatest and last scientific breakthrough before the CEO was killed and the merger with Scopae Science took place. A valuable package from the mysterious project went conveniently missing around the same time and in the months that came after the merger one thing has become certain: Oz’s leading factions are willing to tear the city apart to get at whatever the ECE cooked up. The primary and secondary characters of this story will be the agents or individuals responsible for their factions search for the missing package.
The city
Oz is an underwater city known for the green hue cast by the bio-dome holding back the ocean overhead. The city is ove one hundred and seventy years old and was once a place of progress, change, and hope for a renewable future. It was founded by the Ozymandias Power Corp, noted for its early breakthroughs in ocean current turbines, and the company still holds major sway there. Contact was lost with the surface some fifty years ago after some unknown but major surface event. Since then Oz has become less of utopia and more a renewable disaster. Inequality and crime have become rampant and data is currency everyone speaks.
sectors
Some one at some point sat down and planned Oz. But honestly its a rabbit warren now of tall buildings, compact hives of living spaces, forgotten passages and poorly planned out terraces. The city is broken up into Sectors, Districts and then unofficial neighbor hoods.
Home to both Scopae, Ozymandias power, Al-sim and the city council head quarter buildings, it is a place of wealth, bustle and power.
The sleepy north sector is home to Oz's thriving vertical farming efforts. While having no true resemblance to what we call the country- most of the people who live and work here deal in agriculture. Oz's Docks, and the Ozymandias's mining operations are also located in this sector. It is the greenest sector of Oz out side of the Myrkvior Nature preserve.- This was ECE's old stomping ground. It is the Tech capital of the city. ECE was also highly philanthropic. Many buildings, schools and libraries bare the name of prestigious ECE scientists and board members.
- The densely populated slum districts are multi-zoned and labyrinth like. Housing buildings stagger tall, in some places no outdoor streets remain. Originally zoned as the city's industrial center it has since gotten completely out of control.
Factions
- Ozymandias Power
- Scopae Science
- Glinda & Mombi Herald
- Alatum Simia
- Lizatko Candies
- East Coast Electronics
Is the mega power company that founded the city. While the city runs on the corporation's ocean current combine, they also run a mining operation below the seafloor and the city itself. What they mine for is currently under wraps. For all intents and purposes, Ozymandias is the government these days and the Heir to the company is also the current Governor of the city-state. It is by far the largest employer in the city owning nearly half of the residential ring.
The headquarters of the company is in the western commercial district and was the pioneer in genetics that created the Scarecrows as a competing means of artificial workers. It merged with East Coast Electronics aka ECE several months ago. The former Ceo of ECE was found dead just before the merge and there is still an open investigation. It is now a monopoly of artificial worker technologies and controls the creation and pricing of both Tinmen and Scarecrows. There is still animosity from the former employees of ECE towards their new Scopae Science management and coworkers. They spare no expense and employ only the best.
The largest and best selling independent newspaper in Oz. Is a very liberal publication and notoriously hard to bribe. The other leading news outlets are owned by the other leading companies in the city and are quite obviously more interested in propaganda than news. Its liberal messages are often blamed by the factions and papers for the outcropping of anti-establishment gangs and attacks.
(aka: Al-Sim)
A private mercenary police force. Scopae Science has recently outbid Ozymandias Power for their services leaving Ozymandias owned residential areas heavily understaffed in security. The winged monkey is their crest and a common tattoo for their members. Despite their main employer being Scopae it is possible for private missions to be assigned and to hire a single member for your needs, as they functions most like a fraternity and slightly secret society of mercs. While their services can be bought as a whole they have goals and powers of their own and are not to be confused with an ordinary crime ring.
The Guild is an Oz freedom fighter organization in opposition to city corruption and human rights violations. Their symbol is an Eye in a candy wrapper, which has misinterpreted as a moon in a gene helix; Authorities remained puzzled. Its hideouts are scattered across the city in form of a chain of Slavic candy shops called Lizatko Candies. The company is best known for their lollipops and philanthropy work. The Guild is organized into cells and members are usually aware of very few of their fellow agents.
(ECE)
The pioneer of the fast and easy brain scans that generate the AI for Tinmen. Recently acquired by Scopae Science. while technically merged with their new parent company, members within the scientific community still hold strong resignation and alliance to one another and the people who make up the former ECE should not be counted out just yet. It is rumored the former head scientist has hired a private detective.
Character Types
These surface refugees enter the city in the hundreds through Ozymandias's relocation program. There is not much information made public about them or on what criteria they are chosen for, or how many were denied entrance to the city. What is common knowledge though is each and every one of them has had their memory erased. They retain their skills, (they are all skilled and useful workers; no exclusions) a shopping list of their likes and dislikes, and few lingering glimpses of this and that - Many experience out of context memories that have to do with their profession and advanced experience. All trace of what life was like on the surface as well as their name, and anyone they knew are gone. They do however remember agreeing to the process while in a large waiting room. They don't realize they are from the surface nor is that common knowledge to the public, It is mostly assumed that this is some new trial version of a program to replace the LIoN, and in some cases that's probably true.
They are usually hired out to companies for cheap, many for nothing but room and board. They have all been given a new name all with the last name Dorothy. The only hint of the fate of the surface they retain is their lack of implants, scars, and the look of rough living around their eyes. For the player to know, the surface is a rough place, think wild west type apocalypse like Mad Max, water world, the Road, Tankgirl or Escape from New York. Though, one things for sure, no matter how bad it is in Oz it was probably worse out there.
Rights: Full citizens if exploited due to 'relocation debts' and lack of memory in a new place.
Themes: home, memories, foreigner, discovery of self
Your average human citizen. Oz Natives. Cybernetic prosthetics, VR implants, Genetic modifications and drugs are all common get-aheads in this world, so average is a relative term. They have grown up living and breathing this City and its quirks and details come easy to them. They can recite infractions and contraband list forward and backwards and using their VR is like breathing.
Rights: Full citizens
Themes: And your little dog too~
Citizens who have been sentenced to implantation with a LIoN (Legal Inhibition of Negativity) are known for being remarkably civil, obedient, and excellent employees. They are incapable of extreme emotions, especially those of anger or fear. Occasionally, under extreme duress, the LIoN will malfunction causing a berserker or manic episode. This is very rare; however an illegally tampered LIoN can be used to weaponize the implant to do just that at will to terrifying ends. LIoNs are used as correctional measures, given to both high risk delinquents and convicts of vicious crimes alike. There are no prisons only implants and fctories full of menial labor. The implant itself is rather bulky and difficult to hide, even with a goofy hat.
Rights: Full citizens. Abuse and harassment is common because they're prone to not fighting back.
Themes: Courage, The Id, Aspirations, Berserkers, WITNESS ME
They are advanced brain scanned AI created by ECE to supply the city with disposable manpower. This caused a bit of a scandal, as they were invented before contact with the surface was cut off, and it was decided a scan of a human brain must not be activated until after the original’s death. Brain scans at the graduation of public education was mandatory in Oz for a time and now it is something sold in times of need like grandma's jewelry to a pawn shop. The scan has zero effect on the scanee- -save that some copy of themselves will later wake up as a Robot. Because of the activation laws, most Tinmen are out of place in time and may be agast of what is happened to their city in the twenty to fifty years between scan and activation. So while they may be a robot, a Tinmen is not some one you want to ask how to use the newest and greast VR.
Tinmen retain a full range of emotion, often with the side effect of extreme mood swings. Unless a Tinman somehow proves itself extra useful or was a skilled worker to begin with they can expect little or no maintenance other than what they do themselves. Though completely customizable, the standard issue is androgynous and usually in disrepair unless they're new. Tinmen often go rogue once their employer recalls them-- recall as in scrap them rather than take the time for repairs. The slums are filled with Tinmen in varying states of extreme disrepair. Now and again the city will go in and recall them all when they put stress on the electric grid. Tinmen are not super realistic unless they are custom models. They often have visible joints and bad paint jobs.
Rights: None. Viewed purely as machines by the law despite blatant sentience. Returned to owner if found rogue by authorities.
Themes: Emotional instability, The heart, The Axe, the self
Artificial humans created by Scopae in an attempt to create a second class citizen to replace their rival's Tinmen. They are genetically human, often albino, and their aging process has been tampered with. They are considered highly flawed beings, often having imperfect brain functions that varies from individual to individual. Short term memory problems, shaky motor skills, aphasia, stuttering, and epilepsy are all fairly common. Though not identical or clones they share a family resemblance with each other since they all come from the same rejumbled set of genes. Individuals are referred to by a seven digit number. The last two digits are separated by a dash and are often common fodder for nicknames. They're only very rarely capable of reproducing and come out of the vats at the legal work age and appearance of 16. However their emotional and actual age understandably do not match.
Rights: citizens. technically. Their rights are poorly protected. It is still a crime to harm or murder a scarecrow, crimes against scarecrows, however, go notoriously un-investigated. while technically under "work contract" with which ever company paid for their batch to be born, this is just fuzzy speak for being owned. They can rarely get another company to buy out their contract. rogue Scarecrow, like tinmen are rounded up and returned to their employers.
Themes: Intelligence vs perceived intelligence, the Brain, Patch work, often older or younger than they appear
Technology
“The internet” of this world. The Cry-fi field is emitted mainly by the crystal core, the smaller Crystal Hubs around the city and even the teeny tiny C-chips used in Tinmen and general data storage. The Cry-fi stores data in real space, making computation speed and storage space nearly infinite. Since data is moving through space in real time (often invisibly and faster than the human eye can track) hacking is a much less sedentary job. The Cry-fi field has several “channels” or “vibrational frequencies”, So multiple things/data/programs can be happen in one physical space to a limited extent. The term Deep Cry-fi refers to the lower channels which are less reliable, less used, and slightly harder to attune hardware too.
It towers out of the center of the lake in the middle of the city. Data on the crystal core itself can only be assessed by Immersing and has long been abandoned as a main form of storage and computing once cry-fi was harnessed and implemented into everyday use. Immersing in the crystal core is a data fever dream unless you have the coordinates to a “community”, “Game”, or “Base”. Tinmen frequently immerse in the crystal core and have created virtual reality towns, games, and hang outs. There are many abandoned coordinates, constructs, and ghost town areas of the core since Human Immersing has become more frowned upon.
Immersion is how you enter the virtual spaces of the crystal core. This done by using an imersion rig, wich alows a meat brain to interface with M-data. Imersion junkies are known to binge M-data like it's netflix and some are even adicted to it. Some enter the crystal core virtual realities and spend more time there than in reality. This tech is mostly home grown and tends to be bulkier and typically helmet shaped in design. Using an Immersion rig puts you in a stupor to the real world- hacking in Oz is a parkour adventure, imersing is something you do some where safe. LIoNs are programmed to prevent immersion but there are workarounds.
These slick hover vehicles have more in common with motorcycles visually and functionally. Side cars for one or two pasengers are common. Most Zoomers are part of one of several city wide share/pay to ride programs.
Is absolutely not a bus. It is a series of of high powered Pneumatic tubes that functions, for the most part like a train or bus. The cars are spherical and seat four to six and linked together in groups of six or eight.
Anything old that a Cry-fi Saver user would probably have no idea how to use. Relics from the surface. Outdated data storage units and Wi-fi exist, though confined to the enthusiast, the collector, and those desperate for privacy. However the record player has never gone out of style, especially paired with 3D printing, and the record business is booming. It still gets called dust tech though.
Ink: A black substance that can be taken smoked, injected, or eaten. It is made from the combination of mining refuse byproduct and a natural toxin found in a deep sea fish. This stuff is a potent and addicting upper with hallucinogenic effects that can trigger a psychotic episode or psychic awakening. Taking Ink can kill you but some say you can read minds, astral project, or view the future. Some say it's the same thing as Immersing in the Deep Net: Use cry-fi without an interface maybe? Who knows! Give a shot and maybe you'll find out, maybe you’ll just puke pitch for three days. The fun never stops!
Muzik: Allows you to drink a song. It will vibrate inside you, in your head, fuzz you up like you’re drunk, and put you in whatever mood that song puts you. How? Science.
Immersing: Addictive, Addictive, euphoric and escapist. While not technically a drug the chemical effect on the brain is marked. Accessing the Deep Net for long duration and intensities is rumored to have intense effects of euphoria, future sight, and godlike computing power. Authorities and reputable science organization have put little effort into this due to the spoopy conspiracy theories and urban legends surrounding. Cry-fi has been deemed safe for human use and works. Until one of these things changes it is unlikely for the supposed psychic side effects to see scientific study if it even exists.
A Pop Shot: The best stimulant on the market. No need to sleep for three days. No ill side effects--hallucination or shakes...until it wears off. Be ready for the hardest crash of your life.
Refresher: this drug inhibits short term memory storage and temporarily relieves anxiety. If you're lucky who ever you poison with this will forget everything in the last ten minutes. If you take this recreationally you’re gonna have memory gaps but feel relaxed and refreshed after every dose--what were you doing again?
Kansas Cocktail: Not many know where the foreign Dorothies come from but it's not hard to guess what serum they took if you're in the know. The Kansas Cocktail, when properly administered, causes a short coma and near total long term memory loss. In some cases memory will return slowly over time, or will jumble memories out of understanding instead of inflicting memory loss.
Vape: Smoking is illegal but vaping is merely annoying. Comes in flavors, synesthesias, colors, sounds, and even moods. I hear the color blue tastes great. Uses the same tech as Muzik. How? Hey man I’m not a scientist.
Old Fashions: the slang term for any surface drug. Many are hard to get due to the plants and compounds they come from being scarce in Oz. Others are just as prevalent on the street as they are today.
Crystal Oz Tech: In depth
Cryfi glove- Often refereed to as simply part of a users phone or tether the golve is what alows the user to interface with the cryfi. The Cryfi stores data in real space and is capable of projecting holograms in real time and space, however the device lets the cryfi know where the user is and acts as the location for the data tether. The glove itself does not physically store data unless its outfitted with dust tech to do so. These 'gloves' may or may not look like gloves for casual users, but for serious hackers the devices can be.
HUD- Heads up display. While the cryfi can create holo screens out of thin air, many still prefer to use HUDs worked into glasses, hoods or immersion rigs for privacy and ease of use reasons.
Holo screens- these are the screens the Cryfi generates for displaying data. If you are not using a HUD to veiw data you are probably looking a Cryfi generated holoscreen. Data caches, nodes and advertisements are all common visual occurrences.
A veil- a cryfi generated illusion. These are always transparent and incorporeal and not great, you can learn to spot them easily.
Node- Data stored for personal use, used in opposition to a tether. Nodes are meant to be stationary and usually stored in a home or bedroom.
Tether- The portable data usually anchored to a person's Cryfi glove.
Data drift- All data on the cryfi attempts to drift back to the core and must from time to time be rearanged. Nodes will move slowly over time. Misplaced data will circle the Crystal Core like lost souls.
Immersion rigs- Hooking your brain up to the crystal core is risky. These devices are designed to translate m-data stored on c-chips into information understandable to a biological mind and vice versus. This tech is unstable and often DIY. The Virtual reality that exists inside the core is built by several immersed users shaping a piece of the crystal core with their own m-data. Every virtual place was shaped by several users visualizing and overlaying real and imagined spaces. Many of these spaces are better crafted than others. The core has an eery dream like quality and meat brains have a harder time with it as all the data has to be converted from m-data to brain data. Lag is a common issue. This however doesn't stop immersion junkies for like a dream space better than Oz. Regular cryfi can be accessed from the core, however its akin to practicing a dark art and talked about in creepy pasta and urban legends. The drug called Ink is said to enhance one's ability to sync with the core and do those sorts of things. Tinmen however do not need imersion rigs and can acess the cryfi at will with the right augmentations to their factory default machinery. A tinman who is immersing will stare vacantly.
M-data- memory data. Memories can be uploaded if you have a meat brain. And downloaded if you have a crystal chip for a brain. Tinmen's personalities are a very complex type of M-data. (I had attempted to remove this from the world building but its back.)
