This is my first time making a thread so bear with me
In this world, magic is a highly useful but extremely secretive art. To the average person, it's thought to be genetic, something that runs through the blood, a rumor intentionally fueled by witches to keep magic from becoming wide-spread and away from those who might misuse it. In reality, magic is merely a skill that may be acquired by anyone, a practice of drawing runes with specialized ink and pens, requiring years of intensive study. Most witches start off studying at a young age as apprentices in a coven, they receive their cap and robe upon passing. As they progress further, the administrative body for witches, known officially as Sigil and colloquially as Gold Pennant, progressively checks in on and investigates all registered witches to ensure they aren't committing any taboos, those being:
-developing highly destructive magic
-developing magic that interferes with bodily function
-Developing magic that interferes with the cycle of life and death
-Developing magic that destructively interferes with the economy
Some wiches operate unlicensed independently or in covens that break those rules, said covens are constantly being searched out by Sigil. Otherwise, legitimate covens operate with little interference. The general mission of a witch is to improve society by inventing new spells and practicing older ones, often for the being it of non-magic society.
Time-period wise, the world is somewhere between the Elizabethan era and the Victorian era, as in there isn't any electricity and gas lighting isnt particularly common, but carriages and things can be seen frequently in larger cities.
If you have any questions about the world, please ask and I'll be happy to answer!
Once anyone's ready I'll post CS and RP threads.
