The Zombies
Typically, the zombies' behavior can differ drastically depending on the amount of time has passed since they were infected. If one was infected for a short period of time, ranging from several minutes to about a month, their mobility would be just like that of a regular human's. After they pass that time range, their bodies begin to rot, thus their mobility begin to diminish. Given enough time, they will reach a point where they rot completely and die.
The zombies react upon sighting a human, or hearing loud noises. They will follow the human or the source of the sound relentlessly until they devour them, or until they lose sight of whatever they were pursuing. However, if a zombie sees you escaping into a building, they will attempt to enter.
The Infection
Once bitten, the virus will invade the brain. However, the speed of the infection varies depending on the size of the wound. If it is a large wound, the victim could turn within seconds. However, a small cut can go unnoticed for days before the victim loses their sanity.
The virus seems grim, but all hope is not lost. Yes, it is possible to stop the infection by removing the infected area, but the government did find a better alternative. It is not a cure, but a vaccine that is able to temporarilystop the infection for a month maximum if it was a small wound. However, side effects include uncontrollable anger, sudden mood swings, headaches, and occasional nausea. After that, the infection will spread much more rapidly, and the infected will feel great, unbearable pain.
The vaccine was distributed to local hospitals and medical offices, but not only is the closest medical office an hour by foot from both the school and the store, they are very often surrounded by a horde of zombies. Unless for a great emergency, or if you have an ingenious plan, it is highly recommended that you do not tread into those areas.
