Counter Spells

Hi. Welcome to the Compendium. The answer to your question is at the end of the Iron Countermagic writeup, on page 225 in Abyssals.

As this is your first post, I want to give you a piece of advice. Please don't take this personally (in fact, others take note:) because ppl round here constantly ask obvious questions, misremember facts, and act too lazy to go look stuff up for themselves. That doesn't mean it's fun to spend five minutes reading and replying to a question it took 8 seconds to look up the answer to, in an obvious place.

Please everyone look in the obvious places before you fire up your internets.

Simple answer is there is one spell to counter every different cirlce of spells that exist.  And each counter spell will affect spell in its circle and below.

Same goes for Abyssal spells.  My personal favorite part is the fact that the energy form the spell get to blast everyone in a radius.  It has stopped my spell slingers a couple of times realizing if they counter the spell that the innocent peopel in the area are gonna take damage.

Now i'm confused. I thought the counter spells for each circle would affect equivalent circles. (i.e. Terrestrial, celestial, solar counters would affect 1st , 2nd, & 3rd circle necromancy in the order presented).  So do you actually have different counter spells based on types of magic? as in i may have the solar counter (no books at the moment, name alludes me) which allows me to counter solar spells and lower (celestial & terrestrial), but i can't counter Void circle necromany unless i have a different counter spell?

Sorry if this is hard to follow. And i've just recently been buying/reading/playing exalted so if this is answered in a book, i must not have come across it yet.

Thanks,

Sorcerous countermagic can dispel any magic of its own Circle or lower. Same with Necromantic countermagic.

However, if one uses Necromancy to dispel Sorcery, and vice versa, the countermagic spell acts as one Circle lower.

This basically means that Solar Circle CANNOT be dispelled by Necromancy, and Void Circle CANNOT be dispelled by Sorcery.

Clear?

I know there's a Man-Machine Protocol that acts as First Circle Countermagic, but what happens when Protocols are being Countermagicked?

Actually it's more powerful than Emerald Countermagic. Not only does it absorb the spell's Essence, but it also affects Iron Circle Necromancy.

As for your question, I can't find the answer stated anywhere. It seems reasonable to treat the protocols as sorcery for the purposes of countermagic, as they're both Primordial Essence-manipulation of the living world's Essence.

It may be better to treat protocols as a different type of 'power' altogether, and apply the one-level modifier--require Sapphire/Onyx CM for Man-Machine, and Solar/Obsidian CM for God-Machine. This way, the mechanics go by the description in Essence Matrix Inversion Procedure (Autochthonians, p. 156).
