Conversation with an NPC

"So..." He began, slowly, deliberately, having trouble believing what he was saying. "We're... not real?"

"Well, yes... um, no... maybe?" She scratched his head, looking into his eyes and searching for a sliver of understanding he could grab a hold of. "It's something like this. You're... creative. You, um, create... things, like a child playing make believe in the gardens, in the comfort of the warm afternoon. It's childish, and somewhat immature, maybe even blatant escapism, but we do it anyway... It's... well, it's just fun."

For some reason, he seemed even more confused that before. "But... why?"

"For many reasons, but let's go there later." She waved him off before scratching her chin in thought. "The point is that, well, for all we know, you know? We could all be... just... figments. Yeah, figments of someone's imagination. For all we know, there may be people, real life people, somewhere, sitting on a table, lying on a bed, just thinking, imagining that all this that's happening to us, is happening like... like a story about to be written. But, even if they're just imagining, their just making something out of nothing, to put on a shelf, or to forget some time or another, to us it's real. The master... yeah, assuming we're not real and just little figments flying about, the game master would be viewed as a god here, even if, when we get right down to it, he or she is just a regular person in that world. To us, he or she IS GOD, and all of this here, this is true,"

"But... this is true." He concluded feeling no better than before. "This is real and we ARE real too."

She looked at him once more, finally for the first time, she saw what he saw. She saw a man, form a village, a man with a past even if she did not think up of one for him. She saw a man with a family she didn't, she couldn't know despite everything she penned down and placed into this little game of hers. She saw a man with a name, a real name and not just three letters used and overused again and again.

She, the creator of this false world, smiled at him, finally realizing that it was just as true to him as it was to her. She finally remembered why she had continued such a childish pastime after reaching adulthood.

"Yes... I guess you're right."
