It is early 2844. Four months ago, humanity made first contact with the Vaskran alien race after a severely damaged human asteroid mining ship jumped out of hyperspace over the human colony world of Cascade with the Vaskrans on its tail. Upon encountering humanity's warships guarding the colony, the alien ships opened fire. That move was unacceptable, and war between the two sides is unknown, but many experts speculate that the miner had unknowingly intruded Vaskran space. While humanity's military wing, the United Earth Government Naval Command was able to drive of the aliens with the help of the heroic Special Operations and Combat Team Anvil, it came at the cost of thousands of civilian lives and entire cities, not to mention the countless military personnel lost in the ensuring battle. What was a fight for a single colony erupted into full-scale war with the Vaskrans.
However, you are not a member of Anvil Team. No, you are William Turf, a lowly Private in the 262nd General Combat Infantry Battalion, a unit usually sent out to die in large numbers. You were training on planet Reunion eight hundred lightyears away from Earth when they arrived. The entire planet was placed on high alert, with warfighters scrambling to face the new threat. In the ensuring chaos, you are separated from your squad, Kilo Five. You are given no time to think as anti-air guns around the military base you are in open fire at Vaskran landing craft. A plasma bolt from one of the landing craft streaks towards you and explodes right in front of you, sending you flying backwards. The blow rattles your blue and grey powered armour. Shaking your head, you slowly get up, noting you do not have a weapon, minus your standard-issue SHP8 Heavy Pistol/Personal Defence Weapon System. Conveniently, the blast just so happened to knock several weapons out of a locker right to your feet. You take a second to ponder your choices even as a UEGNC FA-25 Warhawk Exoatmospheric Fighter streaks by overhead, its 30mm rotary cannons blazing.
