"I've been where you've been before. You remember it so fondly, don't you? The screams of the medicine man down the road, the cries of the prior, muffled suddenly as the holy scriptures he so zealously clang to were shoved down his throat. You remember running through the streets with your family, trying to escape the demonic host that had suddenly set itself upon your quaint home. The sobs of your young sister as her feet hit the muddy patch below, giving out before her, your parents urging you to keep running as they ran back to get her. I trust you know what fate awaited the three of them. And now, you sit here in the mud, rain and misery, unable to cry anymore.
You contemplate suicide, I know, but let me offer you something better. Let me offer you.. vengeance. Come with me, young dove, let me turn you into a mighty hawk so you may take the revenge you so rightly deserve."
Yo. Keeping in line with my fantasy craving, this story follows a master demon huntress and her new apprentice, the two traveling a post-apocalyptic world in which a massive demon host overwhelmed the majority of civilization, only small pockets of isolated settlements remaining from the old world. In the aftermath, the demons spawned their greatest challenge yet; the Demon Hunters.
They each swear loyalty to one of three different sects and are trained entirely in the field underneath a master hunter or huntress. Almost all recruits are of young ages, between 14 to 18, to ensure that they pass on the most experience to their apprentices when they reach master hunter or huntress status, and rid the world of as many demons as possible, whereas master hunters or huntresses are between their late thirties to late fifties.
Previously a shunned art, the hunters practice three schools of magic, each school belonging to a different sect. The first revolves around summoning creatures of the wild. Wolf packs overwhelm small demon hosts, bears serve as meat shields, hawks provide sight and so on.
The second is all about manipulation of perception. What you see may not be what the others see, what you feel may not exist at all, and is simply phantom pain. The senses are overwhelmed before the hunter goes in for the kill, killing what is effectively a sensory vegetable.
Lastly, this school of magic is often the most difficult, the warping of arms. One arrow becomes a hundred, one blade becomes ten, explosives detonate when commanded, and oftentimes, weapons become sentient beings, taking upon various traits to the benefit of its user. A lethal wound taken as a stray arrow hits its mark may steal the life force of the hunters prey is one such example.
The world is ripe with prey and challenge. 'Tis time to follow in the footsteps of your master, to take revenge against the hellions that stripped away your innocence and happiness. You need only to let her teach you.
