Come on and rate it: Starships for Exalted.

The essence beam is easily the most powerful weapon there, I think it is to powerful and I think its speed is the problem.


With an exalt at the controls using infinite archery mastery 10-12 successes on each attack is achievable. With no flurry penalty and onslaught penalties to both DV and shields the gunners essence in damage dice will be applied several times each action against anything les than top grade shields. With 2-3 essence beams firing on the same target top grade shields can be penetrated. Even with dragon blood level gunners


You might point out that this costs a bucket load of essence to power the weapons but compare the 5 shots with the essence beams to a single shot from a 5 mote weapon against a massive ship with military shields, the enhanced essence beam will do its overwhelming of 5 (or your net successes if that is better than 5) the spread torpedo will beat the armor to do net successes +8 dice of damage. Both can be dodged or parried with only single charm activation. The essence beam will yield gunners essence * 2-3 dice of damage, must be defended against multiple times and leaves you able to fire again the very next tick.


This dose assume that shield hardness is dropping with shield soak. If not it is only really nasty against combat shields or less.


Multiple small shots being a valid strategy is something I like but you need to make the speed much longer than 1 tick

I haven't fully done the math so I'm not sure how this would work, really... But in the case of essence beams, the idea is that the flurry be treated as a single attack. It was basically a way to make a weapon you can regulate to different levels.
 
If you want to treat it as a variable strength attack then I suggest taking a leaf from charms such as elemental bolt. Make its mote cost 1-5 and the damage 4A per mote spent.


I still don’t know why you gave it a speed of 1.


On the subject of elemental bolt how do starships interact with normal exalted weapons and damage effects.


The dragon blooded are on a stare destroyer style ship, the anathema fly a small elegant skiff


A sworn brotherhood in space rated dragon armor climb out the maintenance hatch aft of the bridge, unseen by the enemy ship exchanging fire with the bow guns. Each dragon blood takes a rail, the bear of a man chosen to lead them kneels on the hull, the others each place a hand on his back. The ship accelerates as if to ram, at the last moment the dragon blooded ship veres down and to starboard, the dragon blooded each send 5 motes, prepared for an elemental bolt and channeled threw there elemental lenses to there commander, he raises his hand and points to port, as soon as the anathema ship comes into view he lets loose the furry of the elemental dragons upon it.


The damage code for that attack is 100L, 104L if at least one participant is a fire aspect, if we assume the leader is E3 and the assistants are E2 the range is 220 yards (so very close in your system) the accuracy is +7 on dex + (athletics or archery) and an exalansy ca be used. We are also assuming that the leader is stamina 5.


The dawn cast solar curses as hi control panel explodes in his face, his skiff disarmed he calls for the eclipse to keep dodging and get out of range before jumping into the airlock, with the airlock cycled a shot from the realm destroyer blows it open, holding on to the zero G stabilization rail he activates immunity to everything tequnike and expends his last breath of air on a curse against all dragons and all that would scratch his paintwork. Holding the engine vents for support, ignoring the searing heat, he channels the charm solar flare methodology threw his solar lens, and sights down the barrel of the finest fire wand ever conseved of, he uses lays the groundwork for his strike with infinite archery mastery before finally activating the combo, sun among the stars. Trance of unhesitating speed, there is no wind. For an instant the dragon blooded sensors are blinded by the flare of his anima before the ship is struck by 12 bolts of solar essence. Slam 4 shots into each of weapons, thrusters and shields with unerring accuracy, taking all those systems of line


This assumes the dawn cast is essence 4, solar flare methodology is 5m and 1w with the solar lenses it gives base 32L, the combo described will be expensive, 48 motes and a willpower. Even assuming the heaviest class of ship and shields the perfect attacks will penetrate shields and ping damage amounts to 16 dice minimum against each sub system, there is practically no chance that the ship will be able to continue to fight and with its shields down it can be disposed of at lesure.


If anybody is wondering how the solars survived the 100L attack the little skiff they are flying is of surprisingly sturdy construction the damage roll wasn’t the best your right that still isn’t good enough. Well the eclipse knows hull preserving tequnike. See, all awesomeness flows from solars.

I made it speed one because I like the idea of having the option of a gun whose purpose is to nag.


It's basically a gimmick, like other things (Blinding torpedo I'm looking at you)


On interactions with regular effects: The ships are impervious to damage caused by mundane weapons, under rules printed... uhh... Somewhere, I believe it was Scroll of Kings. This is: Characters are too small to inflict any consequent damage on the vessels.


Of course, charms/sorcery are a different matter... (ST fiat should be applied, because what you described is thoroughly awesome, on the other hand a simple attack supplemented by excellencies is lame) Now, when I made this, honestly I only had Terrestrials in mind, since Celestials are non-existant in my setting.


Also, with respect to speeds and ranges: I built the system with some concern for actual physics, this includes speeds needed to maintain orbit in a planet similar to the earth, and that eventually led to such large ranges: Basically, if ships can move in the vicinity of miles per second or more, having ranges in yards is stupid.
 
... without actually looking through this thread that carefully, or reading your starship entry - Is there some background on this idea somewhere around here? Specifically, an idea of the cosmology and thinking behind a starship in the Exalted-verse.


Is this for an alternate setting where there is such a thing as planets/space, or should the ship rather be called a Wyldship, that cuts a swath through unformed chaos?
 
It's for an alternate setting where there's in fact space and planets.


I'm pretty sure the system could be used for wyldships (I based myself off of such, for starters) or voidships or modern exalted or whatever really, though.
