Combat Tutorial - KoI vs. Grey

Grey

Dialectical Hermeticist

  • Langley's Leap burns for an hour before the rain falls.

Stephan is the last survivor, surrounded by corpses in the courtyard - a solitary command, and now all lie dead. Ally and enemy. At least on his side, they were only Chattel. Easily replaced, and soon the support forces will arrive to haul it all off to the vats.

The arrow's passage is almost drowned out by the hissing rain, but clatters on the cobblestones - Stephan's head missed by inches. A lone archer has taken the wall, and it seems enemy reinforcements have arrived from somewhere - four H'kaeri soldiers, well armoured, armed with their long spears, guarding any approach to the archer on the wall.

A butcher's work is never done.

Stephen, observing the four armoured threats before him. He couldn't out reach them. Spears outranged his swords, so the first thing he needed to do was either disarm them, cut them apart and make them non threatening, or get them from behind... or above. He ran behind a building and sheathed his blades, finding grips on a building. He attempted to climb one of the shorter ones, in the hope that hit plan would work.

You easily scale the ruin, the beams of the roof exposed and impressively sturdy. Another arrow whizzes by.

You can choose to sacrifice 2 Combat Pool to cross the distance and attack, but may get hit with an arrow en route. Or you can move slower and eat even more arrows.

Stephen, having scaled the building, crouched behind a wall, attempting to protect himself from the arrows while preparing an ambush.

You almost don't hear it over the rain, but you catch footsteps on the cobbles to your right. You think you might land right on top of them if you move now, and the archer can't fire into a crowd of allies.

Stephen, hearing the sound of what seems to be footsteps, quietly drew his blades, and then dropped over the edge of the building in question, landing and immediately striking out in all directions in an attempt to hit one of them, or disarm them, or something.

Disarm is an understatement; you are like a bird of prey in a next of kittens. Blood gouts and mixes into the puddles on the ground as your blades flash, killing two men outright and severing the arm of a third. The remaining soldiers - the archer now among them, armed with spear - rally impressively and strike at you. One behind you, one in front.

Please make two rolls of two dice each to parry.

Stephen, now on the ground and encountering the two and a half remaining threats, prepared himself to deflect their attacks.

You know your trainer would shake her head to see you know. Neither parry is well-executed, the uneven footing and recovery from the jump throwing you off, but one enemy strike is wide and the other shrieks harmlessly off your armour. The one-armed soldier is fleeing, crying, clutching his stump, trailing blood behind him. He won't last.

New Round; all Combat Pool refreshed. You have initiative so strike when ready.

Thanks to their spears, they've moved out of Reaping range.

Stephen, quite enjoying his task now, threw one of his swords between the two remaining soldiers, aiming for the back of the fleeing target. It's so much more fun to kill them yourself than to let them bleed out. As for the remaining two, despite being out of range themselves, their weapons were not. With his remaining three swords, he attacked their spear in an attempt to break them.

With the rain, weight, and moving target, the thrown sword clangs off the stones and you lose sight of the runner.

But your sweeping, turning strike cuts the head from the archer's spear. He's already reaching for the shortsword on his hip, but the soldier you missed is surely lunging with his own, intact spear.

Either make a roll of 2 dice to block one attack, or two 1-die rolls to try and parry both.

The sword passes your guard, but is deflected easily by your armour. The spear, however, punches through a weak spot near your upper right arm's joint. The pain is immediate and burning, and the limb spasms uselessly. At least it was the empty one. The soldier twists and pulls, leaving a shard of metal embedded in the wound.

You lose 6 Condition and 2 Health, and are now bleeding. One of your limbs has been disabled.

A new Round begins. Better kill 'em quick.

Stephen, now greatly angered by the assault against him, and the fact that these pathetic creatures would have the balls to attack him in such a fashion, took a step forward and unleashed all of his rage on them, striking with every ounce of his resolve.

Your remaining blades cut through the rain and the flesh of your foes; they drop to the ground in a stinking heap. The rain can barely cover the reek of blood and shit in this charnel house of a ruin. You're still bleeding, but soon reinforcements should come and the Surgeons can patch you up.

First in a long line of victories, you expect.
