I'm sure this has been posted here and is fairly well known, I suggest we get it stickied though, because it is really invaluable when it comes to combat questions and the like:

Q.  Does peripheral Essence committed to an artifact add to the activation of an Anima Banner?


A.  The Essence only adds to the Anima Banner when initially committed/spent. Having 5 motes committed to a weapon does not cause your caste mark to permanently glow, nor does spending a single mote after that act as if you cast 6 motes. Link
