"Growf!"
OOC: This is mainly a showcase of some of the NPC's I have available. There are more on the three lists. All have CSs, though most need to be edited before linking them in. Wrong formats, wrong genres, etc. But they are all there if you want to dig. Some have very unusual backgrounds.
Sept 5, 2022 Monday (about two weeks into Fall Semester)
Fall 2025 had seen the arrival of a number of new professors at Florida Tech. Many had followed the money and prestige of a three time recipient of Nobel Prizes. Others had been drawn by a professor who was a former US astronaut. Still others were keen to rub elbows with famous authors - of science fiction, fantasy and mysteries.
Teachers
The prodigy of the lot was Duncan Moran. He was the youngest recipient of a Nobel Prize not for Peace at the young age of 17. And he had received a second one at the same time. The grant money bestowed had drawn a following. Wherever he went, others followed in hopes of getting grant money to conduct their own research. What also followed him was a layer of security. He was a prolific science fiction author under the pen name James Braxton, who had put on paper a few best selling trilogies as well as a TV series called Scorched Earth. He was also the creator of the comic book, Vanguard.
Now that last part was the problem. Vanguard was a very real superhero. He was sort of an Iron Man type - wearing black armor. He had been seen doing impossible things like “lassoing” a tornado and taming it. (He shot it with some sort of energy beam and drained it.) It is believed that he tried the same thing with a hurricane, but only weakened it. He caught a plane and landed it safely. He was heard speaking Turkish in the aftermath of an earthquake in eastern Turkey. Some believed he was an alien. Some thought he was a time traveler from the future.
But all eyes turned on Duncan to seek an explanation. Thing of it was, the comic had come out first. So he had suggested that perhaps someone had taken it upon themselves to adopt the identity of his character. Cosplay. Then again, if anyone had the science to pull it off, it was Duncan Moran. So he was under constant surveillance. But all he ever seemed to be doing these days was research, teaching classes and grading papers.
Diane Matthews was the next celebrity to grace the campus. She was the next JK Rowling. Under the pen name Heather Daniels she was the author of the Chronicles of Azure (Middle Earth type realm invades Victorian England and starts a war that lasts a few generations.) She had also created the comic book Junkyard Jane.
The third celebrity was Kassandra Soleil. She was a highly prolific author of mystery novels, sort of an Agatha Christie. She was also rumored to be a psychic who worked as a consultant for the police, most notably NYPD.
Next in line was William Greyson, a former NASA astronaut. He was almost as well known for his college football career .. at MIT.
Security
There were a number of other celebs. So security was going to have its work cut out for them. Rumor had it that they were to be offered a new piece of gear called a “biohound”.
That said, a number of new additions to the campus security staff had been added. First was John Reese, a retired US Marine, former Force Recon. Of all of the new staff present he was the straightest shooter - pun intended. He clearly knew some of the other new hires. But that came as no surprise as he had been a trainer at Twenty Nine Palms and some were marines. It did have the decided advantage of keeping some of the younger new hires in line. Next in line was Amaretta Carnegie. Also a former US marine. She also radiated a purely militant attitude. The woman never cracked a smile when anyone was looking.
Both of the first two were far overqualified. But as it turned out they had family on campus. It was a case of taking on work to support loved ones. Amaretta had a daughter, Amanda Hamilton (Age 23), adopted, and also in Security. She also had a son, Mark Hamilton, who was already a professor at age 18. Her husband was a geologist from Iceland. John Reese had a wife, Elsa Madison who was a professor, as well as the woman’s daughter, Chase, age 25. Chase was also a new hire for security.
Curiously there had been one other resume that had crossed the desk of the security supervisor. It was that of Dominic Quinn - age 50. The man never scheduled an interview. It was almost as if someone had submitted the paperwork for the man. He LOOKED like security. He ACTED like security. But it wasn’t until he was actually on campus as a part time student that he showed up. The man stood 6’9”. It turned out that he had a wife and daughter attending as well.
Students
The celebrities among the students weren’t as notable as the older celebs. James Fleming was the son of a famous footballer from England. He had his own pile of trophies having received professional mentoring in sports his whole life.
Kyoko Masanori was the daughter of one of the wealthiest men in Japan. She was a member of “Team Masanori”, which had won some prestigious sailing races. Kyoko had her one private 160 foot yacht, Taiyo to Kaze (Sun and Wind). It had been a gift after winning one very important race.
Lastly there was Erik Blackwell. The guy rode a Harley, wore biker gear, and often carried a guitar. He seemed to be a natural rebel and always managed to rub authorities the wrong way. He acted a little like a rock star. But he was a grad student of rocket science.
Perhaps the most interesting student was Sybil Shepard. She drove a Model T. It was custom built and electrified, not an original. But the woman seemed to love it for the fact that it was so “retro”. It made her an instant hit with the Quinn’s, as well as any car enthusiasts. Of particular note, Bruce made her nervous.
