[ColdHarem and Gilmore] Life after You

(Attached warning: my only knowledge of what a ranch is comes from children's TV and Of Mice and Men, and now google. Any mistakes I make in technicalities, please point them out and I'll do my best to amend them.)

This was the kind of heat that killed people.

A scorching summer afternoon had swept over the ranch, baking it in the early morning, and by now the sun was high in the sky and the air sweltered. Daniel hadn't seen this kind of heat in a good few years. Even though it made you feel like you were being cooked right through, and it was hell to try and get work done in this kind of heat, there was something comforting in how totally overwhelming it was. Time seemed to stop as the horizon warped with the heat waves, and the surrounding plains shimmered dizzily.

It was during this kind of heat though, when you wanted nothing more than to collapse and wait for it to pass, that people in his situation had to work. Having long given up on wearing a shirt, Daniel had on a suitable Stetson hat, and he was ferrying water to the various livestock troughs so that they didn't end up dead in this kind of weather. The horses were all tied up out of the sun, lazily swatting at flies with their tails, seeming pretty content with their situation. Daniel had to admit, he envied them.

A couple of other ranchers were helping out too, but recently the ranch had been low on workers; it was the reason Daniel had been able to get a job there so quickly and easily. Still, whilst the work was hard, it made for a good distraction, and he focused on it in silence, grinning as he scratched the muzzle of one of the horses, a blacked haired specimen belonging to the rancher's daughter named Thair.

Abigail wiped her brow as she worked getting the cattle in she drank water from her canteen. The sun was scorching today and she was in a white tank top and jeans. The heat would kill someone if they didn't drink enough water.

Her father had cut back on workers, because they were losing money and almost lost the farm. Abigail was now caring for her father who was sick and entire farm. They were all like family. They all eat together and actually work hard. Today was going to be a long day.

Abigail bearded the cattle into the pen and walked over to Thair. She pet his main and untied him. She looked at Daniel and smiled. "Come on time to

Turn the horse's out for lunch."

Grinning at Abigail, Daniel gave her a nod before pulling off the horses' head collars from where they'd been hung up on the fence post. He handed some over to Abigail before slipping two over the muzzle of two horses, clipping on the leading ropes. With Abigail, he turned the horses out, leading them off before, after ensuring the gate was secure, unbuckling their halters.

Looking over at Abigail, Daniel felt pretty impressed; with her father sick, her taking over the ranch had been pretty brave, but she was doing a damn good job all things considered. He imagined she was worried about her father, since they seemed to have a fairly caring relationship from what he could tell of it, but she'd taken everything so bravely.

"Damn hot out, huh?" He said as they passed one another, shooting her a grin. Walking back from the horses, who stood still, watching him, before turning and galloping off, he looked back over at Abigail. "How's your old man doing by the way?" He hoped he could ask her that. He thought it might be overstepping, but hell, she'd been so busy lately, he wondered if she ever got the time to talk about it.

Abigail was filling up the trough with water she was watching it fill up and thinking about jumping the water. She was beyond warm. She adjusted her hat when he approached her.

"You know it, it is really warm. Worse then hell out here."She says and smiles. She took her hat off and fanned herself. Abigail was leaning on the fence.

Abigail had been beyond busy so when he came out of the blue and asked her about how her father was." Oh same , not better not worse."Abigail says. She ran a hand through her hair and put her hat back on.

Abigail turned her head hearing someone call her."one second. "She says. She walked over and almost freaked out. "Why didn't you tell me sooner turn the water off and go get lunch ready."She snapped. She unhooked the gate and got on her horse Thair bare back. She was a distant away from the house. She kicked him into a gallop and went for the big house she tied Thair up and ran inside. She sighed seeing her father on the floor."Come on PA, lets get you up and showered."She cleaned him off and got him back in bed.She fed him and got up "sleep dad." She says. She ran a hand through her hair and went down stairs m she leaned her head on the railing and closed her eye's annoyed.

(apologies for vanishing, yesterday was chaos)

Watching Abigail walk off and get pretty stressed out, Daniel kept quiet. She seemed the kind of angry where she didn't want others interfering, and besides, it wasn't really his place. As she rode off on Thair, Daniel checked that the horses were all alright before hoisting himself up upon the horse he'd been given use of at the ranch, a grey stallion named Gabriel. Having overheard Abigail's rant, he guessed that he was to be expected back at the ranch sometime soon, and he began the ride back, checking over the animals as he went.

After tying up Gabriel in the stables, Daniel stuck his head into the big house to see if anyone was around, and was met with the sight of Abigail leaning on a railing looked shattered. "You need any help, miss?" Daniel offered, not wanting to impose but well, she rather looked like someone who might like some.

( dont worry about it I work to much )

Abigail looked up hearing him."No just tired is all. Heat is killing me today.Go wash up and gather every one for lunch."Abigail says. She went back to her demeanor of being the boss. Her father was worrying her, but she had not time to show it. She went in a and washed her hands and face real quick.

Abigail had the guys get the food on the table. They had started with out her. Which she didn't care about. She grabbed a glass of water and sat down at the table. She wasn't that hungry. She got some food and ate slowly. Abigail messed with her plate. She thought about what still had to be done. She was lost in thought not listening to the guys yammering about god knows what.

Doing as he was told, Daniel went and fetched the rest of the ranchers, laughing at how they all cheered at the news of food and escaping the heat of the sun. The rest of the ranch hands were pretty loud as they ate, typical boisterous guys, or at least they seemed that way when they were eating. To their credit, the food was good, and worth fighting over, and so their boyish banter was more entertaining than typical. Daniel kept quiet for most of the meal, grinning whenever one of them cracked a joke - more often than not impressively crude in nature - and making comments whenever it would be awkward not to. Beside him, one of the quieter ranch hands ate in silence, and opposite Abigail kept to herself. She seemed pretty wrapped up in her own head so Daniel didn't bother her, instead turning to the ranch hand beside him and discussing what needed to be done that afternoon out on the fields.

When they finished the meals, the hands had cleaned all of the dishes flat out, several asking about whether or not there was more, half teasingly, half serious. They cleared out quickly enough, grabbing their things and shuffling back on out to work, bitching about the heat like old women on a porch. Staying behind to help clear up, if only to take shelter from the heat for a few more minutes, Daniel glanced back at Abigail as he stacked the plates. "You're looking mighty thoughtful there," he observed, stacking glasses atop the china before picking up the stack, holding it steady under the crook of his chin.

Unfortunately, distracted by trying to work out just what was bothering the owner's daughter so much, Daniel had stacked the plates a slight bit too high, and as he lifted the pile the cutlery stacked on top went clattering down, loud amongst the silence of the otherwise empty room. It shouldn't have been any bother, the knives and forks all able to withstand a couple droppings, but the sudden clatter made Daniel stiffen. Loud noise triggers had always been an issue for him, and even after a year of therapy for it, he could never predict the flashbacks nor stop them. The top few glasses slipped off and joined the cutlery on the floor, smashing into an array of pieces, and he couldn't do anything to stop it other than try and manage his breathing and remind himself where he was.

When it was over and the anxiety had passed, Daniel immediately swore, set the pile back on the table, and went about plucking the shards of glass from the floor, collecting them in his palm, careful not to slice himself. "Shit- I'm sorry, I just spaced for a second there," Daniel said, laughing it off with ease; this was hardly his first time coupling the disorder with public humiliation. Grinning, the shattered glass plucked from the floor as best as he could manage, he stood. "Got anything I can use to sweep this up?"

Abigail had not even joined in with there boyish banter. Her mind was so far from her.Abigail heard some speak to her and looked up at Daniel. Her look was blank she was trying to come back to reality. She was startled by the crashing plates. She was back fully now."oh christ," she muttered and started to clean up. She helped him." Dont worry about it. There is a broom in the closet. "She saysm Abigail grabbed a towel and started picking the big pieces up and left the rest for him to sweep up. She cleared the table and put the food away then started cleaning the dishes and cutlery that wasn't broken. When she finished she sighed and went to check on her father. Abigail gave him some food and came back down. She placed the dish on the sink and sighed. Her father being this ill was breaking her heart. She sighed and went out side to work. She was going to feed the horse's and give them water. She passed the men messing about. "Hey go get to work the bulls pen still needs to be cleaned fences need to be fixed the chicken and rooster pen needs to be cleaned. Go on." She snapped. They nod and walk off. She went in thw barn to feed petting the horse's one by one.

Grabbing the broom from the closet, Daniel helped sweep up the shattered glass before returning the things to the cupboard. Mentally, he berated himself for allowing himself to be so easily triggered, and for making an idiot of himself in front of the boss's daughter. When he was done, he passed the others without speaking to them, loosing his horse and mounting it, riding off to bull pen to do what needed to be done there, replaying the moment over and over as he rode. He passed the rest of the day doing work as he was supposed to, and decided to skip dinner that evening. He didn't feel like listening to the riotous chatter of the others, not like facing Abigail after screwing up. Instead he wondered outside, sitting outside the stable with the horses, whose presence he'd always found comforting, and lit a cigarette - a bad habit he'd picked up from the army and had been meaning to break, but had never quite broken free of - leaning back against the barn walls as he watched the clear night sky, enjoying the now pleasant heat of the evening.

Abigail had finished her work for the day and took Thair for a ride. She had told the ranch hands to eat with out her for dinner. She be a bit late and to keep it down or she kick there asses for waking her father. Abigail went for a rise down a trail she knew all to well. She posted while Thair galloped along. She pulled Thair to a stop and got off him.She sat at the lake and went for a swim. She got out and let the hot night air dry her off.She went to grab thair, when she heard a rustling noise. She looked around and shrugged probably a snake. She dressed in her clothes and boots again. She pulled herself up on to Thairs back and started to ride back. As she did Thair got spooked and threw her off. Thair galloped for the barn.Abigail had hit her head on a rock, she was curled up a hand on her head.she lay there trying to get her bearings.

The men finished dinner and cleaned up and went to Daniel. "Hey Abigail hasn't come back and were kinda starting to worry about her."They say. Abigail was never out past dark. Just as they spoke Thair came running up."oh there she..."they say and stop and go to grab Thair. Seeing Abigail wasn't with her horse." Oh shit" on says. He whistled for the dogs. "First one to find her let out a whistle to the rest of us."He says.
