See, if you don't give the people more freedoms as internal conditions are deteriorating, your enemies become more economically and culturally dominant, and capitalism and nationalism are on the rise, they often take it by force. You're focusing on the actions of a few men while ignoring the troubling conditions which led them to make these decisions out of necessity.
