It was a warm Friday afternoon at the Academy. The second week into the school year and already Jay was assigned a group project. Well, everyone at the academy had. The city was sponsoring a local history event and the school jumped right on that opportunity. People from all grades were grouped together and assigned different sections of town to research and present on. His group, which consisted of his roommate Victor and a few others, were assigned to research the old factory on the river. There wasn't much about it online other than it was a car factory before being shut down, so his group decided to go check it out in person. After all, they were given the afternoon off for just this purpose.

Jay was still having some trouble adapting to the academy. Victor was nice enough, but Jay didn't know how to connect with him. He hoped they'd get over that soon, considering they lived together. The others in his group were Alisa, Russel, and Ashlynn. He didn't know much about any of them, other than Alisa was supposedly rich. Oh well, he'd just have to wait and see.

He was waiting on a bench in the courtyard waiting for the others to arrive. He hated being late to anything, so arrive way ahead of scheadule. Not like he had anything better to do anyway.

Ashlynn walked into the courtyard with her bag one her back, one strap on and the other of so her bag was swinging on her back. She was supposed to meet some other there, and was upset to know that they were getting Alisa the rich one. She did not like other rich people because they usually acted snooty or stuck up, thinking they are better than everyone. Ashlynn was willing to give them a chance to prove they were not this way but only time would tell. She saw the kid named Jay waiting on the bench nearby and walked towards him. "So... are we the only ones so far?" she asked as she held her hand out. "Ashlynn. You must be Jay?" she said with a semi smile.

A group project...not something Alisa was truly interested in. Well, she had to do it for her grade, and a few people she knew would be extremely upset if she failed a class due to laziness not to participate in a class so, here she was, strolling out to the courtyard to meet her...teammates? Perhaps that was the right word.

She knew nothing about those who she was about to meet, except Russel who was her roommate, and her ever constant rival. It'd be interesting to see how they'd work together, always trying to one up each other.

"And I'll outdo him again." Alisa mumbled to herself as she spotted a couple of people sitting around the bench. With a sigh she slung her bag over her back, approaching the group.

"You the project group?" She asked pretty blatantly as she strolled up to the group.

"Uh, yeah," Jay said, standing up to shake Ashlynn's hand. "Nice to meet you."

There wasn't hardly a break before another person walked up. She certainly wasn't Victor or the other guy in the group, Russel, so that left Alisa. The rich girl. It was no surprise that was the only description he'd heard of her, but hopefully she was more than a money bag. Jay nodded in response to her question and sat back down. The agreed upon time was fast approaching. Hopefully the others hadn't forgotten.

Russel strode leisurely towards the spot where his assigned group were going to meet. He hadn't seen Alisa in their dorm room, so he decided not to wait up. On the way, he spotted a nervous-looking kid struggling under a mountain of books.

Stepping up to help, Russel recognized the kid as Victor Cerveau.
In their first two weeks, he'd established himself as an unparalleled brainiac. Teachers loved him, even if he would occasionally correct them during lectures. A bit insufferable, but he kept to himself and seemed to mean well.

"Oh, hey dude, are you heading over to convene with the others too?" Victor asked, the stressed word sounding foreign on his tongue.

"Uh, yeah..." Russel replied unsurely.
"Aren't you going to put those books in your dorm first, though?"

Victor staggered another two steps as the books began to slide.
"Hmm? No, I'm bringing these with me."

"Really? Why so many? Do we really need-"
Russel picked out a book from the middle of the stack, causing Victor to shift uncomfortably.
"The Big Book of Moss?"

Victor recovered and adjusted his jacket with his shoulder.
"You can learn a lot about the history of a building by the state of it's exterior, especially by studying the moss in it."

Russel set down the book and picked another one, eliciting a slightly annoyed sound from Victor as he adjusted himself again.
"The Life of Derreck H. Cemper?"

"He was pretty famous, and also from around the area, I just thought that-"

Russel dropped the book on the last one he inspected and went to pick another. Victor realized what he was doing too late.
"Please don't-"

He barely managed to keep himself from falling, let alone all his books, which scattered around nearby.
"Oh, sorry," Russel said offhandedly.

The book in his hand had several illustrated characters, each wearing some kind of high-tech jumpsuit.
"Transcending Reality; A Tale of Valor?"

Victor looked slightly embarrassed. With a small shrug, he offered a sheepish response.
"In case, you know, the trip over gets dull."
Russel gave a small "Hmm" in interest, before returning the book to it's owner.

"You can't take all these, man. Pick three, and we have to get going. I've got a bag here, so we can put them in there and leave them until we get back."

Victor grumbled bit, but gathered three books off the ground; a book detailing the map of the city, along with several schematics, a short history of the overall area, and the aforementioned sci-fi book.

Then the two gathered the rest off the ground, loaded them with some difficulty into Russell's bag, and left it in a corner on the wall.

"I still think that moss book could've been helpful," Victor mumbled as they approached the meeting point. Russel patted him on the back helpfully, which the kid didn't seem to notice.

When they got to where the rest of the group waited, they greeted everyone.

"Sorry we're late, we were a little distracted," Russel said.
"We?" Victor asked with a touch of frustration.
The former sidled up next to Alisa, while Victor stood awkwardly, not knowing quite what to do with his hands now that they weren't preoccupied with the book stack.

Jay looked around at the group. He wasn't sure how things were going to go. He was already under the impression that Victor was frustrated with Russel and he was still tentative towards Alisa. Alisa and Victor seemed to be buddies already. If all else fails he knew Victor the most, though there was something about Ashlynn that he liked. Oh well, he was no psychic. Only time would tell how this would go.

"Looks like we're all here," Jay said, standing up again and picking up his backpack. "Shall we get going?" Out of paranoia, he opened his bag and began triple checking that he had everything he needed. Pens, pencils, erasers, notebook, clipboard, fresh plastic bags... didn't look like he was forgetting anything. Confident in his ability to pull his own weight, Jay swung his pack over his shoulders and slipped his arms through the straps.

"I believe we should. Don't want to go past our next meal now do we?" she said a bit jokingly. She had snacks in her pack, more than schoolwork if she was fully honest. So she was going to be alright if she was out of dinner, plus she had no roommate to snitch on her if she had been out all night. It was perfect.

"I wonder what we will find in that old factory... It must have been cleared out years ago." she said as she took out a soda from her bag. "I asked around and apparently there used to be a rumor that an ex-scientist used to run it."
