STRANDED
The snow was quiet as it fell around the mountain, only the gentle grinding of the cable car being heard alongside the idling of cars. People loaded themselves into the machines, ensuring their vehicles were locked before leaving. The trek up the mountain was quiet and nostalgic but the memories of youth and excitement were drowned out by guilt and dread. What would people think? What would they do when they met up?
Many questions were bouncing around the brains of those who dared to venture up to the Wintercourt Ski Resort. There seemed to be an eerie calm across the wilderness if one looked outside the window, the snow only being disturbed by wildlife, showing little human interference. As they reached the summit, the large main building loomed in the back, lit up with warm lights, almost transporting them back into their childhood. It was all the same as it was back then. Freshly combed ski runs, snowmobiles parked by the lodge, skis, and snowboards available for use, it was… disturbing.
It was as if the passing of the twins had never happened. The familiar purple banner hung across the entrance of the lodge, with gold letters spelling out something nobody had seen in years, “Happy Birthday Lauren & Kirk!”. A chill seemed to settle down everyone’s spines as they looked at the ‘celebration’ that had been prepared for them. They remembered Mr. and Mrs. Winters' words, how they had urged everyone in the group to celebrate the lives of Lauren and Kirk, allowing them to all move on once and for all.
Unbeknownst to the group, after the last cable car descended back down the mountain, the whole rig shut down. It was unable to be operated on either side, essentially stranding everyone at the top of the mountain, unless they dared to try and descend the mountain by other means. But nobody knew, how could they? They were too busy unloading their belongings in the lodge, preparing for a God-awful party that nobody asked for.
The group successfully made it up to the Wintercourt Ski Resort and has started to get settled in the lodge that they will be calling home for the next week. Upon arrival, everyone noticed that the twin's parents had arranged it to be exactly how it was ten years ago, the last time anyone was last there. The decorations are up, small gift bags were prepared on the table, snacks and meals filled the kitchen, and many games/movies were ready to be played in the living room. It's hard not to feel uncomfortable in such a setting but there's not much anyone can do. All they can hope for is that people get along with each other and they survive until the end of the week. However, without anyone's knowledge, after the last group member arrived at the lodge and was securely inside, the cable cars were completely shut down. No power, no access, no way down the mountain. At least, no easy way down. There is no explanation for this at present, but it's only a matter of time before someone wants to leave and they won't be able to.
