  Josie's room is small but clean. A full-size bed sits against one wall, while a desk is against the wall opposite it. Both her bedding and the walls are white and a red oriental rug lays between her bed and her desk. There isn't much room for anything else. Her clothes are all in her small closet and her windowsill doubles as her nightstand. She tries to make her bed regularly but usually decides not to.   Josie Paige Keyes arrived into the world two weeks after her mother’s nineteenth birthday. Sammy Keyes named her first and only child after her father, Joseph, who died in an accident when she was nine years old. She was always a bit of a rebel but really started going off the rails at sixteen. Luckily, despite all the trouble she’s caused, her mother, Linda, wanted to help her when she fell pregnant. So, Josie was raised in her mother’s childhood home, in a small coastal town in Southern California.
  
  Despite her mother’s issues, her life was relatively stable. Her grandma made sure of that. Her days were spent in the sunshine, playing with her friends and all of her mother’s troubles were hidden from view. However, when she was eight, everything came crashing down. Linda was diagnosed with cancer and died within three months. This drove Sammy to spiral, falling deeper into the addiction that was so well hidden from Josie.
  
  With no way to afford the home they were living in, the pair relocated to an apartment on Gilded Street in Seattle. Sammy wanted a “fresh start” in a new place. Seattle was so dreary and different from home. Josie grew up in a quiet, safe suburb, so Gilded Street was quite a shock to her. She struggled to fit in at first, unaware of all the unwritten rules and knowing what was “normal”. It was a completely different way of life.
  
  Her mother was not the most responsible, but she did the best she could when she could. Sammy’s addiction, however, often interfered with her intentions to be a good mother. She was inconsistent, forgetting to show up to parent-teacher conferences, forgetting to pick Josie up, and forgetting to make dinner. But, she made up for it when she could. She did love her daughter and did her best to be there for her when she could.
  
  With time, Josie adapted, but Gilded Street never became home to her. As she got older, she realized college could be her ticket back home, or at least just out of Seattle. She could make a life for herself and escape her circumstances. She studied hard and stashed away as much cash as she could from the various jobs she worked in high school.
  
  Her hard work paid off. She was accepted to a school about an hour from where she grew up. She didn’t get a full ride, but the scholarship was substantial enough that she could probably swing it with her savings and if she got a decent job when she got to the school. Her savings would be just enough to get her to school and get her set up for her first year. She was finally getting out.
  
  A week before she was due to pay her deposit, she came home to find her bedroom ransacked. The first thing Josie did was dig in her closet for the shoebox she kept her money in only to find it empty. She screamed and wailed as her reality set in. She wasn’t going to college anymore.
  
  Her suspicions that her mother took her money were confirmed when her mother showed up three days later and wasn’t able to look her in the eye. Josie had never felt so betrayed in her life. Sammy gave her what was left of the money, but that wasn’t near enough to do anything with. Josie stopped speaking to her mother and wanted nothing more than to move out. But, with no money, she obviously couldn’t.
  
  Three months after she graduated high school, right around when she was supposed to be starting college, things crumbled further. Sammy was arrested and was set to go to prison for at least four years. That was it. Josie decided to sell as many of their things (mostly her mother’s things) as she could and used that money to move on her own. She found an apartment with a few roommates and moved in. Of course, she could only afford to stay on Gilded Street, but at least she was on her own two feet.
  
  She dreams of leaving but has given up all hope of it ever happening. The money she makes waitressing at a shitty diner is only enough for rent and her food. It’s difficult to save with only a little left over every month, but she tries. It doesn’t make much of a difference.
