Nexus

The change in environment had only put Nexus on edge, it was clear they were no longer in their world, or even reality, things simply didn't mesh well. Sol was the first to catch Nexus's attention, his voice seeped anger, Poor guy, Nexus thought, witnessing a good chunk of your team being taken out and later being wounded by that fishlegs must've been awful. Nexus felt guilty that he wasn't there to support the other team, but he had been already preoccupied, if Sol and him had switched places, he'd be having very different thoughts right now. Nevertheless, he gave a simple nod at the worry spoken as an order of the party sticking together.

Nexus watched as each member tried different things, flinching as Prism almost caused a disaster and almost potentially got herself and others harmed. If the bridge was taken down perhaps Nexus could try a similar trick to the one he used with Hector, but he needed some energy first and things seemed eerily quiet. Yet as Prism's crystals exploded he saw at the corner of his eye another explosion.

It seemed others picked up on this mirrored effect and attempted different things, Twilight with her lightning and the mirrored one, an even Dopplewalkers clone which was an even simpler copy than the clone. Yet the moment Earthquake threw the rock, none seemed to launch from the other side. "Seems like it's only copying powers specifically." Nexus then approached Earthquake, "Your forms off" Nexus took the pose of a shot putter, "Try taking this pose and throwing a rock like that if you plan on throwing the heavier ones." he would then help Earthquake with his form and posture to maximize his strength of throw, "Hold that position and try to copy my movements." Nexus would then perform the shotput throw without a rock to give earthquake an idea of what he was supposed to do. "Lets also try with a more manageable weight" he crouched down picking up quite a heavy rock, but manageable enough for Earthquake's next throw.

Nina downloaded Magik Hero U on a whim. Many of her friends had downloaded the game and they encouraged her to start playing as well. Nina obliged, knowing she probably wouldn’t touch the app again after she finished the tutorial. She just had too much going on at the time and she was bound to forget that the app existed soon. Nina made her little avatar, which was really just her trying to replicate herself and then put herself in a cute outfit. The addition of deer ears was for funsies, upon completing her character she realized that she might have gone a little too hard on the sparkle accessories.

Still, her character was cute. But when she tried to put her name in, it was already taken, so she went with “Gaia”.

That was it for Nina’s experience with the app, just as she expected, she forgot about it for a few days.

Until it wasn’t. And one day, when Nina was lying on her bed and staring up at the ceiling, a little jingle came from her sound. When Nina went to check it she was met with a notification from the game, she indulged it.

IMG_7799.jpeg

Ah, this must be the game trying to start the actual gameplay prologue. How cute. Nina clicked accept, not expecting a blinding light to emerge from her phone. Nina almost yelped, flinching so hard that she actually dropped her phone. Nina was sensitive to things like bright lights, and she needed a moment to recover from the shock. Nina covered her eyes for a few seconds afterwards, using the tips of her fingers to massage the bridge of her nose. She was very much focused on quelling the unease caused by the flash bang that was Moki’s entrance. So focused that she didn’t even realize there was a magical cat creature on her bed. Then it spoke to her and she lifted her head to stare at it as it explained that she was going to be a magik hero in real life.

Nina was about to unload questions, but the little creature informed her that it needed to be brief, so she clamped her mouth shut and watched them explain with wide eyes. For a moment, Nina stopped listening and she was pondering on how the creature was kinda cute…

Nina was midway reaching to pet its head before it started to go, and a bright light encapsulated it. She felt like a giant hand wrapped around her torso and squeezed the breath out of her. Her eyes resembled those of a deer in headlights before the brief sensation subsided and she found herself in a familiar form. She glanced at her sleeved hands before bringing them to her ears to confirm her suspicions. She was a bit startled by the deer ears that dropped off the side of her head. She couldn’t dwell on it long because Moki kept explaining something else to her. Something about powers and a familiar. It was explained to her rather quickly, she felt like she blinked three times and the little guy was gone.

That left Nina with many questions and a little unicorn in her lap, nudging at her for attention. Nina looked down at him and smiled. “You’re such a cutie pie…” she cooed quietly. “I’ll call you Emoni.” She decided. Nina found herself extremely overwhelmed, there was so much to take in and Nina felt too intimidated by the sheer amount of things she needed to process. So she didn’t process any of it, she sort of just laid on her bed with a unicorn in her lap and petted it until she fell asleep.

She’d try to understand a bit better tomorrow.

Nina fumbled with her phone to silence it. There were a few gazes on her, but she didn’t seem to interrupt too badly. She quickly raised her hand and asked to be excused before making a dash for the girl’s bathroom. She used the app to change her form and sat her phone down on a sink, squeezing her eyes shut in preparation for the light that marked Moki’s entrance. Gaia was a bit annoyed with Moki for interrupting her class.

That annoyance disappeared when she felt his soft little paws landing on her head. Gaia tried to fight the feeling of her heart melting, reaching above her head to pick him up and hold him properly. She peered at him as he introduced himself, only managing to add a little ‘hi’ to the conversation before Moki informed her that she was about to feel uneasy sensations again. Gaia was grateful for the warning, she closed her eyes during the warp. The feeling of weightlessness deeply unsettled her, but it was brief. Briefer than the last time he did weird magic on her. Gaia tried to be grateful for that.

She stumbled a bit when she felt grass underneath her feet again. Gaia groaned quietly at the nauseous feeling settling in her stomach, briefly. Cracking her eyes open and observing her new location. A nursing home? Why? Gaia searched the area for Moki, to no success.

She did spot another person though, assumedly, a hero like her. Gaia watched them with mild shock. “H..Hello.” Gaia greeted hesitantly, she was still a bit off from the warping.

This whole thing was so surreal.

He had only gotten into this game for the hype. He wasn't really into geeky things, so when he heard of a super popular game sweeping the nation, it flagged his interest but he didn’t really think he'd enjoy it. So he let it pass. Only... it didn't pass. It remained a popular topic of conversation far longer than he had anticipated. At this point, he didn't really feel that he could ignore it anymore, so he made an account.

The ability to customize his character's appearance was particularly interesting. He was pretty close to perfect already, of course, but if this was supposed to be escapism, fantasy... he let himself have brown eyes. His hair was longer on his character, too, and his outfit had sort of an ouji-lolita vibe, to match his character's alias: Prinzipe. Otherwise, he looked pretty much the same.

He didn't really play the game all that often. He indulged for an afternoon the first time he downloaded it, but it quickly lost it's novelty... he supposed he just wasn't the target audience for this sort of thing. It bummed him out some that he couldn't get into something that everyone else enjoyed, but what could he do? He had better things to do than mope about a mobile game.

And then came that fateful night. He opened it out of boredom really, he thought that maybe he'd see if there was anything new to do on the game. Something was new, alright. A pop up asking him to accept becoming a "Magik Hero". He thought it might have been some new event going on for the game, so he clicked it. And as soon as he did, everything in the air changed.

He really felt like he was dreaming. This little animal was in his room, and it was talking to him. He didn't really hear what it was saying, he could only focus on the way it's mouth moved. He let it give it's whole little spiel, but most of it didn't grasp him, it just floated around his head-- it was even harder to focus on what it was saying when this electric buzzing radiated throughout his skin, and he was in this pretty new outfit. The little creature was still talking when Clementine looked into his mirror, and all he could do was laugh. This wasn't real. He didn't feel real. It was so funny, so ridiculous. He would wake up any second now, surely. This kind of thing just didn't happen, after all. He must have fallen asleep while playing, the game must have been that boring... And it naturally followed that he would dream about something he was engaging in before falling asleep.

He should have been listening, because he wasn't prepared at all for the sharp feeling in his chest, the pain like he was being ripped apart-- it winded him.

Oh. So this was a nightmare.

On the floor trying to catch his breath, he glared up at the monster who had been yammering on about some stupid nonsense this whole time. But a tickle on his chin distracted him, and he sat up straighter to see a white rabbit with wings staring up at him with red eyes. Okay. So yeah, he was asleep.

He liked this thing better than the annoying one that talked. Almost instinctively, he reached out and gave the rabbit a soft pet on the head, and it nuzzled into the touch. The purple thing was still talking, and Clementine was spitefully trying to ignore it; still, he couldn’t help but pick up 'virtue', and 'forces of evil'... this was so cheesy. What kind of B-grade fantasy movie script was this thing reading off of? He supposed, idly petting the rabbit, that his brain wasn't familiar enough with the genre to create a masterful scene of dialogue in his dream (nightmare?).

The thing soon left, but the rabbit stayed. He pet it for a while, and liked watching it's nose twitch, and its little paws tap happily. "Bunnie..." he said to no one in particular. Eventually he fell asleep on the floor, next to Bunnie.

When he woke up the next day, he was still on the floor. That was... odd. But he wasn't in his fancy little outfit, so that confirmed to him that he must have been dreaming. Of course, he didn't see the rabbit sleeping soundly by his kitchen counter, nor did he notice the rabbit fur on his already fluffy rug. He went to the bathroom, got dressed, skipped breakfast, and made his way to school.

On the way, he opened the app again, just out of curiosity. Was his dream accurate to anything in the game? But he had to look where he was going, and put his phone back in his pocket before he could really look at anything too thoroughly.

Still, the dream nagged at him. It wasn't often that he could recall dreams so vividly, and so long after the fact. It felt like he was remembering something that actually happened. But he tried to shake it off. His day was fairly uneventful until his afternoon classes, when his phone went off in the middle of a lecture.

He unlocked his phone without much care (he had never gotten in trouble for using his phone in class before), but found it eerie that he had heard another phone or two go off at the same time. At least, he thought he did?

Good afternoon, New Heroes! The time has come for your first mission! Please find a suitably private area to assume your EGO form and Moki shall do the rest

... Huh?

This was really strange. Suddenly he felt kind of anxious, like he was severely unprepared, like he had just been told that he had to present a project in front of the class and he had five minutes to come up with it. He put his phone away, and tried to ignore it. He did, for a few minutes. But this strange notification, and the dream...

"Yes?"

"May I be excused?"

"Sign out, and take the hall pass."

As Clementine signed out, he noticed that while the hall pass was still there, the bathroom pass was taken.

A suitably private area, a suitably private area... well, someone was already in the bathroom. He could go to the roof? It would have to do. Once there, and once he had made sure no one else was there, he leant his back against the door, to make sure no one would suddenly intrude. He pulled out his phone and opened up the game. The notification instructions must have been talking about an in-game mission, right? He probably didn’t need to go all the way up here, but privacy was better anyways. 'Assume your EGO form'? But his character was already dressed. Unless it was like in his dream...

His stomach felt cold as he realized that, maybe, it wasn't a dream after all.

He explored the games settings and options until he found a button that he thought would make him 'assume his EGO form'. He felt sick as he pressed it.

He barely had time to feel the fabric on his skin before the thing from before was there again, landing on the roof of the small structure that housed the roof door. Clementine stared up at it, completely still.

"Hello! Please excuse Moki for a moment as Moki transports you to the training area! Moki is told that this sensation can be unpleasant or disorientating for the first time."

Unpleasant or disorientating? No--

"Wait, stop--"

Clementine was too scared to open his eyes. He didn't know which way was up or where he was going, just that even with his eyes closed he could tell his surroundings were exceptionally bright. He felt weightless, and nauseous, and just... scared.

He felt his weight coming back to him, and opened his eyes just in time to not totally wipe out on the grass below him. He made a graceful enough landing, one foot after the other, arms floating back down towards his sides. He took a second to catch his breath. Where was this now?

Before noticing anything about his surroundings, he registered two figures in similarly cute outfits. Oh god. There are other people here.

Clementine quickly composed himself, as if someone had flicked a switch on his back. Did they know eachother already? Ugh. Clementine would hate feeling like a third wheel. He had to get in on whatever they had going on, now. More pressing to him than the fact that there was something surreal going on, was the need to secure social standing.

"Hello!" he waved gracefully at the two. He curled a strand of his long orange hair with his other hand, and internally screamed as he registered that his hair was actually long now. His smile was sweet and peaceful as he asked, "I take it the two of you have played the game as well?"

Clair

Waiting a bit away from where she had appeared was a good call on Clair’s part as she watched the next hero be summoned to the area. Tsk Tsk someone didn’t make a graceful landing she thought as Gaia stumbled. In full judging mode Clair let her eyes roam over the new hero.

Given the simplistic outfit she either was confident in her style or didn’t embrace the heroic feel the game pushed as much. The strange fantasy ears made it seem that Gaia had spent a lot of the time in character creation so maybe she had grown bored of the game after that. And that long hair just screamed I will be fighting from a distance lest something uses it to grab me. The expression she wore while looking around which changed upon spot Clair did not earn Gaia any points. If Clair had to venture a guess for a name of such a frail looking deer like woman it would probably be something generic like Selene or Eocene.

“Hello,” Clair said in curt response, still flicking her gaze up and down the new hero trying to glean more information. You would think being the second to arrive the woman would have introduced herself but before Clair could comment on it seemed another Hero arrived.

This hero landed more gracefully but wait? What was this? Those raised arms were they T-posing? Hmm….well at least this hero had more style than the simply refreshing woodland nymph vibe the other was going for. Clair didn’t know whether to call it classic or basic but couldn’t dwell on it as much or the sudden switch in his composure as greetings were being exchanged again.

“Greetings,” Clair said, taking in the yet again long hair to peg Prinzipe as a long-range user. Seems like someone wasn’t going to introduce themselves either.

“I know of it,” Clair said with a tone implying his sweetness, no he himself, meant nothing to her,” Have you…?” She finished motioning to Gaia with a vague gesture and pause to imply the other should finally introduce herself.

Initially, Gaia thought she would be the only hero here. She figured that this was an opportunity given to one person. But in the moment when she acknowledged the other heroes in the area, she remembered the notification reading that there would be multiple heroes at the meeting. She would’ve remembered that if she didn’t skim. She supposed- she thought she was special, for a moment.

With a damper on her thoughts, Gaia composed herself, the nauseated feeling from her warping diminishing and she was able to shift her demeanor to a much less startled one. A passive smile on her face as she looked over the other heroe with her. If Gaia was phased by the curtness of her greeting, she didn’t show it. She opened her mouth to introduce herself.

“My name is—“ Another hero then landed into the lawn. Gaia glanced at them and seemed less surprised than before. Her ears perked a bit, that was new. She didn’t know they did that. She held her hands loosely in front of herself. She didn’t want to just ignore the new addition and introduce herself. She’s come to the conclusion that there were likely more people coming. Introducing herself now just meant she’d have to repeat herself to any late additions.

“Hello!” Gaia’s greeting to this person was more chipper. She made a polite waving motion. She glanced at Clair as she motioned to her. “A little.” She had the game for around ten minutes before she realized she had a tutoring session that she needed to prepare for. So technically, she didn’t play it.

Nina glanced around for any new additions, oh alright, she supposed she wouldn’t mind reintroducing herself to anyone who showed up late. It wouldn’t be a major inconvenience.

“My name is Gaia.” She put a hand on her chest and glanced at the others with an encouraging expectancy.

Ah, okay. So they didn't actually know eachother, that was sort of a relief. The shorter one seemed nicer, Clementine could feel himself gravitating more towards her-- but there was also something to be said about the satisfaction of getting a frigid person to smile at you. Maybe he’d take up the challenge, though that would have to wait.

The shortie introduced herself as Gaia, and Clementine wasn't sure if that was her real name or her username in the game. It didn't seem that far out there, it could have been her given name... but it could have been an alias, too. He wasn't sure what to say, but he couldn’t let there be an awkward pause when he was supposed to introduce himself, and he certainly wouldn't give up information that no one else was offering. Gears turning in no time at all, he didn't skip a beat as he made the decision to act under the assumption that Gaia was a hero name, and introduced himself in kind.

"Prinzipe," he gave a shallow bow. His crown didn't dislodge, which he did take note of. "Charmed, I'm sure. And you are?" he looked to the taller girl in the white and blue (maybe it was more of a teal?) dress.

They were both pretty cute, actually. He could see them as a matched set, a pink one and a blue one, a tall one and a short one, a long haired one and one with a ponytail. Where did that leave him, exactly?

In any case, at least he wasn't the only one who hadn't gotten a chance to play the game very much (or in his case, practically at all). He felt totally unprepared, but at least he wasn't the only one in the boat, so to speak.

Clair

Seems like Clair was the special one here from actually playing the game. Nothing that she wasn’t used to since she was always special. Clair refrained from expanding on her answer on playing the game though since she only really played solo and if the group leader was chosen by who had the most experience she did not want to be in charge of this disaster waiting to happen.

Clair mentally gave Gaia back some points for finishing her introduction. Also gave herself some points for guessing that lil Cambrian period here would have some nature themed name. With the ice broke it was Prinzipe’s turn to introduce himself to the pair, which he did so with a small bow. Definitely seemed like the type to name themselves after a German word.

“ Esper Princess [____],” Clair said with a curtsy. She didn’t have to take note of her crown not slipping because she had perfect form. At least now if other heroes appeared they might avoid an endless loop of introducing themselves since those desperate to make an impression could do it for the group.

Clair didn’t feel the need to respond to his narcissistic or sarcastic introduction since her bristly aura would say what words could not. Minus points for Pringles here. Her eyes went between the two as she glanced for familiars or weapons. Shifting her stance Clair decided to fish for more information,

“Since you two have not played much, have you had a chance to apply the information Moki gave us?”

It would make sense to start getting a feel for what abilities or habits the others had as heroes. The more Clair learned the more she could avoid whatever trouble they caused. The last thing she needed was someone to do a woopsie sling some filth at her.

Lila

Have you ever smelt spray paint? People huff that shit, apparently. It's addicting- this kind of indescribably off smell, chemically and unnatural, that you'd probably never associate with that awe-inspiring mural on the side of an abandoned warehouse. That's the smell Lila was taking in as her arms flew across a wall-sized canvas, creating her latest work of art.

Should she have been in school? Well, yeah, probably. But she hadn't really bothered for a while- her mom would never be satisfied with her grades either way, and she found that roughly two days of school a week was enough to get her at least a diploma. So, instead, she'd opted to work on what she'd called her 'beautifying project'- which was just tagging murals across dilapidated buildings across the city. Hey, it's not like it's making them look any worse.

Right as she'd finished touching up some details on an arrow departing its' bow, her phone buzzed, chirping the familiar tune of the MHU app she'd downloaded a few weeks ago. Lila quickly moved to silence her phone, looking around before checking the notification- she might've been a delinquent, but she'd be damned if anyone were to find out she was a gamer. Once the coast was clear, Lila pulled her phone out of her hoodie pocket, checking the notification. She'd expected another leaderboard update- despite being relatively new to the game, she'd been climbing the ranks like a pro, likely due to the countless hours she'd put into the game since downloading. Though she'd never admit it, the game was one of the few pastimes she actually found enjoyable.

To her confusion, however, the notification simply said,
"Congratulations! You've been chosen to become a Magik Hero! Accept?" Lila blinked a few times, before hitting "Accept"- It's probably some sort of ranked competition thing, she rationalized. What she couldn't rationalize was when a bright light exited her phone, sending the device clattering to the ground. Not long after, a small, cat-like- or was it rabbit-like?- creature materialized from her fallen phone, chirping in a bright voice, "Hello, and congratulations on becoming the newest Magik Hero! My name is Moki and-"

"Shit! A Yokai!" Lila yelped, reactively spraying the creature with her paint- though the creature only turned semi-transparent for a second, the paint splattering on the concrete behind it.

The creature shook its head, replying in an unsettlingly cheerful voice, "Moki is not a Yokai! Moki is Moki! Moki also understands that this situation can be distressing for humans, but please calm down so Moki can explain! Moki is not here to harm you!"

"I've been huffing too much spray paint," Lila said, shaking her head and returning to her mural as the creature continued.

"You should have many questions, but Moki must be brief! Tomorrow you can ask Moki all the questions you like, but for now Moki is here to test your E.G.O.! Please excuse Moki for a moment, this can feel strange to humans!"

Lila was trying her best to ignore the startlingly realistic creature- that was, until, a bright golden light started moving up her limbs, lengthening and polishing her nails, morphing her baggy hoodie into an elaborate- and embarrassingly revealing- blue and gold dress, and completely transforming her hair and face until she was scarcely recognizable.

"How do you like it, hero? Familiar? It's just like how you imagined yourself as a Magik Hero in the game! You can now transform into this when needed."

"What do you mean, 'when needed'? Turn me back! What if someone sees me?" Lila- or rather, Daybreak, now fully realized, said, her voice cracking as it shifted to a pitch higher than what it was set to in her original form.

Alas, the rabbit-thing seemed intent on ignoring her. "Unlike your human body, you are physically superior and capable of harnessing your own magik. Go on, give it a try! Moki will watch you."

Lila huffed. If I can't turn back, I'm at least gonna scorch this thing into the next realm over. Lila reached down, trying to imagine her summoning one of her in-game abilities- a Solar Storm, or Dawnlit Daggers, or anything- but all that ended up happening was har palm flickering like a dollar store flashlight. Lila growled, staring at her palm in annoyance.

"Oh no, please do not give Moki that look! Magik powers must set in before growing to their full potential! It is dangerous to absorb it all at once, you see. Wait a full day, Moki will show you. Tomorrow night, meet Moki in Memorial Park for your first day of training!"

"Training? What..." Before Lila coud conclude her thought process, however, the cat creature disappeared back into her now-shattered phone, the only evidence of her presence being Lila herself. "How am I going to change back..." Lila muttered, though the longer she stayed as her Alter-EGO, the more... off she felt. The world opened up in a technicolor craze, with unlimited creative potential spelling itself in front of her eyes. No! Focus! You have to turn back!

That's when another ball of light erupted from her phone, splitting into twin orbs which formed into a pair of small, wolf-like creatures, no larger than a cat. "Hi there!" One of the wolves, with a golden pelt and a sun marking on its' forehead, stepped forward. "We're your-"

"Familiars," Lila said, recognizing the chibi-fied animals from the respective MHU game mechanic.

"Yep!" The sun wolf, who, judging by its' voice, was a male, replied. "And we're super cool! We can give you extra abilities, and turn into weapons, and, and-"

"And I believe we need names," The other wolf, a silver female with a moon on her forehead, replied in a cool tone.

"Right." Lila took a breath, her eyes wandering up to her incomplete mural- a pair of twin archers, one running through the day, the other night. "How about... Apollo and Artemis?"

"I love that!" Apollo said. "What's an Apollo?"

Artemis sighed. "If you want to transform into your original form, Daybreak, you can do so through the app. I'll be more of use to you at night, anyways."

"Yeah, okay." Lila blinked, picking up her phone, which, despite being cracked, still worked. She navigated to the app, which now had a toggle for her real-life magical girl form. This is... going to take some getting used to.

The next day was one of Lila's school days. She was in her last class of the day- geometry- and intent on simply getting this pop quiz over with.

That was, until her phone started chirping.

What? I was sure I put it on silent, Lila thought, discreetly reaching in her bag to turn off her notifications. But no matter how low she set her volume, the notifications wouldn't cease. Hell, even turning her phone off didn't work, as she began eliciting stares from her classmates- and her teacher.

"Lila," her teacher started, staring, "If whatever is on your phone is so important that you can't silence it, please deal with it in an area where you will not distract your fellow students. You will be receiving a thirty point deduction for this interruption."

Lila grabbed her phone and rushed out of the classroom, mumbling an apology as a blush spread up her cheeks. Outside the room, Lila checked her phone, finding a notification reading, Good afternoon, New Heroes! The time has come for your first mission! Please find a suitably private area to assume your EGO form and Moki shall do the rest~

Lila grumbled. I'd hoped that was just a bad dream... She slunk over to the girl's restroom, squeezing herself into a stall before transforming into her Alter-EGO through the app. She could only assume some poor freshman was walking by at that very moment and wondering why there was a strobe light going off in the bathroom.

Not long after she'd transformed, her least-favorite rat made in appearance. "Hello! Please excuse Moki for a moment as Moki transports you to the training area! Moki is told that this sensation can be unpleasant or disorientating for the first time."

"Sorry rat, I'm not really down for..." Before Lila could voice her displeasure, she was whisked away through a sparkling purple void, causing her to literally see stars. It probably wasn't longer than a couple of seconds, but it felt like an eternity before Lila was plopped back onto solid ground, the dizzying experience nearly bringing her to her knees, for her own sake, though, she kept her composure- especially since it seemed she had company.

"Uh... hi." Lila took inventory of the others around her- a green-haired girl in a teal princess dress, a pretty, almost elven girl, and a long-haired boy in an ouji lolita-esque outfit. "I figure you all were brought here by the space rodent, too?

To her confusion, however, the notification simply said, "Congratulations!

Gaia took note of the other heroes' names. She liked the royalty aesthetic they had going on. She liked when people put effort into the aesthetic of their appearance and demeanor. It made her feel less silly for putting so much effort into hers.

Prinzipe, as he had introduced himself, seemed charming enough. He was thankful for his presence, mostly because she didn’t think that the newly introduced Esper Princess liked her very much. Gaia was very familiar with what judgment looked like thanks to her mother. And she recognized it very quickly. Gaia automatically equated judgment with disdain. That was what she was used to. Gaia hoped that, if she did her best, she could improve Clair’s opinion of her.

“It’s a pleasure.” Gaia said briefly, after both of the heroes' introductions. These were her future comrades afterall. She’d look forward to getting to know them better. Hopefully they will all get along.

“Yes, I know how to call my powers and I’ve been introduced to my familiar. I read up on the information the app could offer.” Nina explained. She read about how the familiars could turn into weapons. But Gaia was embarrassed to admit that she wasn’t able to will Emoni to do that yet. And her understanding of her abilities were rudimentary.

Gaia lifted her hand slightly and a vine sprouted from her palm and wrapped around her hand once. The movement was enough to show that she could actively control every part of the vine and not to shoot ‘em out and let gravity do its thing. Still. Gaia was partially disappointed, that was all she could manage last night when Gaia was helping her too. Gaia reserved herself to accepting it, she would improve quickly with practice. That’s why she was here after all. Hee disappointment didn’t show to the others, nor did her worry that she was lagging behind them ability wise.

“I’d love to hear about what you can do.” Gaia spoke invitingly. Nina lowered her hand and the vine began to rot quickly. Within seconds, it was like dust rolling off her fingers.

Nina’s ears perked at the sound of feet landing in the grass and she turned to face the new addition. A girl with foxy features. She was glad she wasn’t the only person to put animal ears on her avatar. When she spoke, Nina smiled. “That’s right.” Nina confirmed. Though she didn’t know why there was a disdain being shown for Moki. She thought he was a cutie pie. Maybe it’s an affectionate nickname?

“We’re just doing introductions and sharing what powers we have.” Nina explained.

Doppelwalker's eyes narrowed as the visuals experienced by the clone was transmitted back to the main body. Of course, she expected there to be some sort of difference, as subtle as it might be, it did happen with the others' attacks, but this...

"A rather specific difference, isn't it?" She asked to no one in particular. It appears that different types of magic distorted in different ways, and physical objects disappeared completely...well, that might not be true, it may simply be that the barrier that caused this reflection masked out the physical objects from the outside world somehow, much like how the supernatural elements of their battles seem to be masked from the real world. The others were trying to throw more rocks, Doppelwalker sighed and almost faced palmed, weren't these guys the self-proclaimed heroes that was really into that 'saving people' narrative? Now they're acting like middle school students who's too scared to approach some grumpy senior's house.

The clone that Doppelwalker created was now right in front of the reflected one, through it the real Doppelwalker gazed at its featureless form for a moment, if it was mirroring the movements then it would not make a move unless the real thing does. After a few seconds of little to no progress made, Doppelwalker eventually decided to raise the clone's hand and pressed against the reflection's boarder like one would press their hand against a mirror. Although seeming ethereal, her constructs do still have physical form, it would be a good way to check if the reflections where just reflections, or something more.

Clementine wasn't actually entirely sure what his powers were. He had done a small display of power last night in his room, but he wasn't really taking it seriously at the time, and couldn't really remember what exactly he had done-- he thought he had been dreaming. He realized, now, what an oversight that was. And 'familiar'? So that was Bunnie...? Where were they now?

Luckily, he didn't have to explain himself (not yet anyways). Just as he was feeling a bit jealous over Gaia's conjuring of vines, a new person appeared. Fox ears, huh?

He nodded, still smiling, as Gaia explained that they were just introducing themselves when the newcomer arrived. Maybe now would be a good time to stay on the backburner, try to learn as much as he could from the conversation. He could let everyone speak first and maybe by then he might have figured out what he could do. Then again... while it wasn't the worst thing in the world to be pegged as a wallflower (quite handy in some situations, actually), he didn't want to just stare at everyone from the background (or worse, read the game information on his phone-- how rude!). He didn't know how many people would keep coming, but he knew it would be harder to get a hold in the party if he tried to rub elbows when there was a big crowd, as opposed to a close knit group. He should really get in on the proverbial ground floor here, shouldn't he? Establish his presence from the beginning.

"It's a pleasure to meet you" he bowed slightly again, "You can call me Prinzipe. Gaia here was just showing us how she can control these pretty green vines, it's quite the sight to behold." he smiled down at Gaia. "Have you discovered how far they can extend?"

He wondered if they hurt either party to touch, and wanted to ask if he could feel one, but that might be too forward for someone as soft looking as Gaia.

✧ Seren Raynes || Mercury ✧

Seren is on edge. The images still play vividly before her eyes. Every now and then the images get interrupted by her sense of reasoning: it must have been a dream. But she is very sure that it wasn’t. Yet she couldn’t make any sense of what had just happened. She is way too level-headed to believe that a rabbit-fox in unnatural colors had jumped out of her phone and unleashed magical powers in her. More so, that she had become a copy of the in-game avatar that she had been playing for countless hours. Over the course of playing the game she had become so familiar with the controls, the combos, the strengths and weaknesses of her character and the monsters... Yet now that she had been put into her character’s shoes, quite literally, Seren finds herself trembling and unable to mimic even the simplest of spells. She has no idea how to manifest her hero abilities. Frustrated, she looks up at the cuttlefish that has been floating in the middle of her bedroom this entire time, from the moment they have been summoned into existence by the rabbit-fox. “What are you staring at?” she scoffs. Their expression remains blank. After a short silence they calmly state: “I cannot help you. You have to make a connection with the magic that has been granted to you. I can only assist you in enhancing your skills.” Unsure what to do with this information, Seren remains silent and continues to look at the creature, hoping they will somehow be able to provide an answer to her problem after all. “I believe in you,” they simply say, although their dull expression does not really seem to match the intent. Seren sighs, words of affirmation are not really going to help her. “Maybe the MHU guide can give you some information?” the cuttlefish suddenly suggests. Right, the weird fox-like creature had mentioned this. Seren starts to scroll through the app, taking in all the info that is provided. The walls of text seem to calm her down, although some of them raise more questions than they reveal. Several minutes pass in silence, when the quiet gets disrupted by the cuttlefish. “I don’t mean to interrupt you, but… Have you thought of a name yet?” they ask softly but firmly. “A name..?” Seren stammers. She jumps up, “Ah, yes, a name for you!” she exclaims in a manner more true to her now that he has gotten a hold of herself again. She eyes her familiar up and down, before her gaze catches the patterns on their sides. Their colors seem to change in an almost hypnotizing, wave-like manner. “Hmmm…” She moves her left hand to her mouth as she’s thinking, her thumb resting under her chin and her index finger covering her lips. “How about..." Neon?” she asks the creature in front of her, looking them directly into their outlandish eyes. Their skin color changes, becoming more pink. “Neon,” they repeat, “I like it.” Seren flashes a small but proud smile in return, being acknowledged that she has chosen a fitting title for her pet. Some time passes in which the two become more acquinted with one another and discuss the concepts put forward in the app, until eventually Seren’s head is about to explode with the sheer amount of information. Quickly she transforms back into her human-self using the app and changing into her pajamas. This action also seems to have returned Neon to wherever it came from, because they are nowhere to be seen. As she slips into her bed, she notices the small alarm clock next to her bed: 1:35AM it reads. Being a diligent student, she has her alarm set for 6:30AM. It was going to be a short night’s rest, if she would be able to sleep at all, that is. She tosses and turns, her mind still trying to comprehend the situation she has gotten herself into by merely tapping on that one seemingly meaningless message on her screen, before she finally slumbers off.

The following morning Seren wakes up restless and this feeling persists throughout the day. She is having a harder time focusing, which is only enhanced by the small number of hours of sleep. Luckily she largely manages to brush off the events of last night, deciding that she first has more important things to focus on, like her gymnastics training. She is in the middle of doing a balancing exercise, when she hears a loud beeping from her bag, which she recognizes to be her phone. She looks up, puzzled, since she usually keeps her phone on silent during the day. She ignores it for the time being, as she glances at her coach, who looks back at her with an expression which Seren believes to identify as discontent and impatience. After taking a deep breath, she continues her routine. Standing up as straight as possible, her breast pushed forward and her right foot placed slightly in front of her, she takes on an elegant pose, getting ready for the jump. She takes a few leaps and jumps, pushing her body forwards which in return swirls around itself as it flies through the air. Her feet swing in position and right as she is about to land, her phone disturbs her focus with a shrill and annoying sound. One foot hits the beam but the other slips, with Seren tumbling forward onto the apparatus. By some miracle she doesn’t hurt herself significantly, but enough to make her curse inwardly at the device. She stumbles over to her bag, rummaging through it to reach for her phone. The display is still lit up, showing a colorful popup message from her favorite game.

Her heartbeat rises at its contents. For a moment she hesitates as she looks up at her coach who is clearly disgruntled. In the end she decides to follow up on the directions and briefly apologizes to the woman, before excusing herself and rushing out of the gymnastics room. Grabbing all of her belongings, she runs out of the building and behind it, hiding herself behind one of its thick walls. Right as she opens the app, Moki appears with a flash, just like the night before. With its fox-like (or was it cat-like?) behavior, it sits perched up on the grass in front of Seren. She also notices that she is now back into her hero form.

"Hello! Please excuse Moki for a moment as Moki transports you to the training area! Moki is told that this sensation can be unpleasant or disorientating for the first time."

Before she can even protest against being taken somewhere against her will, Seren feels herself get dragged along, as if a strong current swept her off her feet and is now dragging her down into the depths. Instinctively, she holds her breath. She gasps for air loudly once she feels solid ground under her feet again. She glances around a little bewildered, processing the drastic change of scene. She then notices the group of people a small distance away from her. She takes on a cautious stance at first, but her posture relaxes when she realizes based on the attire and conversations that they were heroes just like her. With a few nimble steps she closes the gap and introduces herself. “Sorry I’m late to the party. I go by Mercury,” she says in a cool manner, trying to appear confident in her potential. “I guess we were all summoned here by the same being, correct?”

She looks in awe as one of the people, looking ethereal like a forest nymph, spawns veins from her hand. “Awesome!” she exclaims. Which reminds her… She has not really tried out her powers yet. She also has not realized that Neon is floating behind her, close to her left shoulder.

Clair

Seems like some of them studied more than others. Of course, Gaia would have some nature themed powers and while it looked like the vine was weak such a versatile power could be useful depending on what her weapon was. Clair split her attention to it since it seemed even more heroes were coming out of the woodwork as if the earthy hero had summoned them herself.

Wait was that fucking dust? Just because Ch-ch-chia had earth powers didn’t mean she had to bring along the scorn of the earth. Clair made a mental note to stay away from any plant life Chia would produce.

Before Clair could open her mouth to press Prinzipe to show his abilities or familiar next at Gaia’s request he changed the topic drawing attention to their new ally. Well, at least he introduced some of them and asked a follow up question to Gaia so Clair could know how far to stand away from her.

Assigned long ranged by hair again Clair began to judge Daybreak. At least this time it seemed like the long hair would burst into flame or something so it could be she was midrange like Clair was. They also seemed to have spent a bit of time in character creation as well given those fox ears so maybe Clair could pawn the leader duties off onto them. Daybreak had seemed to keep her composure to teleporting pretty well so Clair allowed a small hope to blossom. That blossom died. It died before it even had a chance to bloom as Daybreak called Moki some space rodent. How dare she. Moki was definitely some sort of space cat.

Gaia gained back some approval points as she quickly brought the new hero into the current topic while answering her questions. It gave Clair yet again time to split her focus to watch the other new hero make their way over.

Mercury wouldn’t lose any points from being bewildered upon arrival since by this point the group of heroes was probably a sight to see with all their designs clashing but she would not gain any points. Quick nimble steps, introducing herself with an apology, and having her familiar in tow gave her some points. Clair was starting to get worried about their party composition at this point however so hopefully the fact mercury had her hair up meant she was close range and not just some fashion statement. Water was most likely her theme based on the color choices and familiar appearance. Wait, didn’t cuttlefish produce ink? Her familiar better not barf on her…

Not feeling like wading into the small talk yet Clair used her telekinetic powers on her scarf to have it adjust her glasses. Since it was done without a second thought it ruined any plan, she had of waiting to show her powers until last.

It seemed another hero appeared while she was doing her introduction. She didn’t want to repeat what she just said to the last hero who appeared. But thankfully, Prinzipe was able to do it for her. Then he addressed her again and she thought about his questions for a moment. Silencing acknowledging that he was totally right about her vines being pretty (<— botany nerd).

“This is the most I can do at the moment. I’m sure the distance will increase as I train.” Gaia answered with a confident smile. Even when she spoke with self-assurance, she somehow managed to look dainty. She adjusted one of her sleeves and averted her eyes from Prinzipe to the newest-new addition.

She must’ve missed Mercury’s introduction while she was speaking with Prinzipe. Gaia didn’t let it show, though. She sent an appreciative glance towards the new addition that exclaimed about how her powers were awesome. Her smile turned dorky. She felt a bit bad that she was literally about to will her vines away the moment Mercury took notice of them. But she was already doing it so oops.

“Thank you!” Gaia grinned a bit. “I like your familiar, they’re very cute.” Gaia spoke as if being complimentary came naturally. She looked more comfortable when she was giving compliments. Gaia liked making people smile.

Still, Nina wanted everyone to stay on topic with the hero talk. So she glanced around the group expectantly, hoping someone would demonstrate their ability next. She noticed Clair using a telekinetic-type ability to adjust her glass and she smiled.

“Telekinesis? Lovely.” Nina smiled. Telekinesis was a good power. Versatile and helpful in almost any situation. What a lucky gift to have!

Nina was about to verbally encourage someone else to speak, but she felt like she was talking too much. The others might be annoyed. She glanced at the others encouragingly instead.

Dopplewalker received no answer to her question, the faceless clone unable to even mimic her words. It silently followed each and every one of her movements perfectly, just like a mirror's unflinching reflection. Just like the clone in front of it, it reached out towards the other until their fingertips touched. Within that moment Dopplewalker could quickly tell two things; the 'reflection' was as physical as her clones, and that it soon moved on its own.

The reflection's fingers interlocked with the clone's and tugged it forward with impressive strength, forcing the clone to stumble across the mirror's tell-tale barrier. This rippled when she crossed it, something that all of the others could see, like a pool of still water being disturbed. They would also see that Dopplewalker's clone disappeared as it was pulled through by the faceless reflection.

What the others couldn't see was what was behind the barrier. Through the clone's eyes, Dopplewalker caught a glimpse into the twisted scene beyond. There were several significant differences, namely that there was no longer a castle on the other side, and the bridge abruptly ended in the middle, right where the mirror's edge once stood. Thanks to the Reflection's pull, the clone was now falling into the ravine. That had changed too. Instead of being an empty drop onto rocks far below, the ravine was completely filled by a wreathing mass of freakishly long arms each tipped with grasping hands. There were too many to count, but several broke off from the main mass and reached up to wrap long fingers around the clone's arms, legs and face.

The moment they touched her clone, Dopplewalker's mind was bombarded with the overwhelming sense of isolation and anguish. For the time being, she couldn't move or cancel the connection. The hopeless sensation was so potent that she could feel her chest ache, and visions of similar memories began to invade her thoughts, even exaggerated visions that were not quite true. Empty friends lists and empty houses, the girl named Kiva had been alone quite often. Perhaps s̶̩̑h̶͊͜e̶͚͊ ̸͇̑w̶̱̐i̷̩̽l̷̮̽l̷̬͠ ̸̲̌d̷̨̕i̶̕͜e̴̤̊ ̶̻̀a̸̢͂l̴͔͊o̷̬͋n̴͖̍é̷̝. N̵̯͙̉͜o̴̲͎̻̊͌̕b̸̙̖̹͇̈ö̸̠̣̙̜̤́͊͜ḑ̵̺̳̽y̸̛̘̺̘͕̬͇̲̒̊̿́̉̕ ̸͈͔̬̓͜w̸̲͙͗͂͑̃͌̽͝į̶̫̗̇͑̽̕ļ̶̗̥̤͇̣̋̃̍̀ļ̴̞̪̲̦͊ͅ ̸̟̈̐̑̓̚c̶͎͎͖͊̕͝ạ̷̡̡͚̜̺͗r̴̢̫̘͉̖̈͜e̶̟͕͓̟̅̊.̶̉̚͘͝ͅ

It would seem that just being connected to the clone was enough to be subjected to this crippling mental corruption. However, Dopplewalker happened to have a unique defense against this. The control of the clone was made possible by the cooperation of her Familiar, who unlike Kiva was not the target of this attack. Using their power, perhaps the aptly named "Spare Cable" could help sever the connection by guiding Dopplewalker to freedom.

Everyone else could see Dopplewalker freeze up and fall to a knee. A cloud of inky mist swirled around her head ominously.

Prism and Twilight didn't seem to be making much headway with figuring out just how they would pass through or around the barrier safely, and while a few other heroes decided to test the nature of the obstruction before them, nothing much was gleaned except the fact that it reflected any application of magic towards it; not a deflection, but a perfectly symmetrical depiction.

"Alas, truly a conundrum of our time. What secret could this pliant yet unyielding barrier bear?" Sarasvati mused.

Doppelwalker, dismissive as always, decided to gather information her own way. And it worked, it definitely did.

But before she could withdraw her clone and relay her findings in her own idiosyncratic way, Doppelwalker seemed to tense up as if struck by electricity, before falling to the ground. A malicious miasma seemed to engulf her, its very presence chilling the air and casting a pallor over the already dark atmosphere.

Great, not again.

"H-hey! You alright?!" They'd been here a while, but finally the presence that inhabited this place made itself known even subtly. Clearly, that barrier was not to be contacted. Stepping forward, Gleam put her hands under Dopplewalker's arms, trying to drag her further away from the barrier.

She was dragging people around a bit more than she expected to today.

"Fiend! Devil!" Kali bellowed. "Utterly contemptible to strike at us with such vile sorcery! Show yourself, that we may strike you down!"

It would be so much easier if it was just another big monster to show up and beat. But the way it looked, it was quite contented to take them apart one by one...

TWILIGHT
Twilight.jpgTwilight had taken care to properly observe her attack as it went across the ravine. And as she had expected, a mirror effect seemed to copy her ability, mimicking its appearance and trajectory, yet with a clear sign of it being a copy. “Ah-ha! It really is a mirror effect. Be careful, everyone, traversing it might be- oh… I guess that works.” Her voice trailed off as she noticed Dopplewalker use her own ability to conjure a clone that would act as a scout and go past the bridge. That sure sounded like it could’ve been the first attempted strategy…

She carefully observed the clone as it made its way to the center of the bridge. Would it also get mirrored? Where even was the mirror? She assumed the center of the bridge but one could never be too sure when Magik Hero stuff was involved. “Oh hoh, progress!”, she let out once the clone copy appeared on the other side of the bridge. Same as with her lightning bolt, this clone looked different than the original, being without a face. “Urgh, this is getting creepy…”

She didn’t pay much attention to Earthquake’s attempt until she noticed in the corner of her eye the rock thrown by her ally disappeared at the middle point of the bridge. “Ooh, nice one! So it’s a magical… illusory barrier?”, she theorized. “What’s even going to happen to Dopple’s clone?”

Her question was immediately answered when said clone fell into the other side of the mirror. “Whoa, Dopple! You okay!?”, Twilight cried out when Dopplewalker showed signs of being affected by… something. She approached the other girl, wanting to make sure she wasn’t injured. “Ohhhh nope, you’re not okay…”, she added, now noticed the eldritch mist hovering around her ally’s head. “Whatever happened to the clone must’ve been transmitted back to her.”, she analyzed, glancing back at the bridge in case more dangerous development was brewing in the castle.

“Oh dear, that is not good! Not good at all!” Was Moki’s cheerful response to Dopplewalker’s current ailments. Their starry eyes drifted to the barrier, which after the brief ripple, had returned back to its perfectly still state.

The mental attack on Dopplewalker was enough to shake Prism out of her self-pity. Besides Gleam and Twilight, she was one of the first to rush over to provide (or at least, attempt to provide) assistance. She ran up to stand beside Gleam, “What happened?”

It seemed that Twilight had been paying close attention to the events, so Prism listened to her recount carefully. "So whatever was on the other side did this... but what was it? Did she see anything?" She then turned to address Sol Invictus, Earthquake, Nexus and Candace, "Everyone be careful and stay away from the bridge until we figure out what was behind it."

Eyeing the dark cloud, Prism cautiously raised her spear to touch it, noticing how the eerie mist shifted and wrapped around the spearpoint. Despite its appearance, Prism was able to move her spear away without issue, scattering the tendrils back into amorphous mist. Maybe she had only imagined it?

“Moki, what is this mist and what do we… what can we do to help get rid of it?” Prism asked the creature, a bit of fear slipping past her authoritative tone.

“Well, the outcome of an attack on the psyche is predominantly determined by the target. Afterall, each individual is unique in their resistances and weaknesses.” Moki said in a matter of fact, yet cheerful tone that never fit the serious situations it tended to accompany. They swished their tail lazily, “To answer Prism’s first question; Dopplewalker has been touched by the corrupting force of the Lair’s Heart. To answer Prism’s second question; very little! An internal battle is fought solely by the soul of the individual.”

Moki blinked and tilted their head quizzically, staring up into the dead sky as if to recall something. “Hmm… Moki actually does think outside forces can contribute… but cannot confirm this. It is not unheard of for close friends and fuzzy animals to provide emotional support to humans undergoing emotional stress, yes? Moki does believe this information to be at least 30% factual! Moki will try to verify this information at a later time. Moki is sorry for the inconvenience.”

"Fiend! Devil!" Kali bellowed. "Utterly contemptible to strike at us with such vile sorcery! Show yourself, that we may strike you down!"
The familiar's voice rang out through the dead silence, unanswered by the gloom and unheard by all heroes except Gleam.

Moki's ears twitched and they gave a small chirp, “Moki doesn’t think that the idea of honorable combat is something shared by monsters, but loud noises are an excellent way to draw attention! What a creative strategy! Perhaps some monsters may stir!"

They glanced at the barrier and then back to the group. Out of habit, they began to knead their paws and purr lightly, "Since the standard amount of time has now passed, Moki is able to give the heroes one helpful suggestion! Actually, Moki believes the suitable format in these cases is known as a [hint]! Moki's Helpful Hint no.1: copies and reflections are not the same thing. Take Dopplewalker's clone, for example. Is it a copy of herself, or is it a reflection? Was the hero magic reflected or mimicked? If this can be done to a hero's power, do the heroes think that the same can be done to a monster's power? We have only arrived recently, so Could it be copying something other than the hero powers?"

"Hehe Moki thinks that puzzles are very entertaining!"
With chest puffed out and tail flicking happily, Moki looked very pleased with themselves. Then they saw some of the confused looks on the heroes' faces and their pride deflated. "Oh, was Moki too obscure? Oopsie, maybe [hint] formats are not very helpful or fun? Moki has used up their time-limited [hint] too... hmmm... well Moki can just give a small lesson instead!"

Moki hopped down from their perch and trotted to a central spot near the heroes. They walked past Dopplewalker, ignoring the miasma she was suffering. The little critter then sat down on a patch of dead grass that used to be the parking lot. “A barrier such as this is meant to confuse the senses. Many Lairs utilize similar things to confuse and manipulate humans, which in turn can also trick Magik Heroes, who are still human. Moki thinks that the heroes are relying too much on their human senses and not their magikal ones. Remember when Moki mentioned that experienced heroes can detect Lairs? Well the same can be said for Hearts. Right now you may be able to sense a large, general area... but it should be enough! Try to focus on your inner magik. Close your eyes and try to reach out with your magik. It will be difficult at first, but Moki promises that over time it will be easier. Do not be discouraged if you cannot get it at first."

Should a hero concentrate deeply for a few moments, they could just faintly detect a sickening feeling in their gut and an itch behind their eyes. It was about as clear as seeing in murky water, but there was a small tug in one direction. If the bridge was North, then this sensation was South. That was about all they could garner at this time. The bad sensation from the South was also growing stronger. Rapidly.

It seemed that their little introduction get together would have to be cut short. Clementine watched with guarded interest as a beat up vehicle drove onto the premises, sporting some kind of advertisement on the roof-- a restaurant, likely. Were they here to make a delivery to some old people? This would be awkward... they probably looked like a bunch of cosplayers standing around like this. He wasn't really expecting the woman that exited the vehicle to engage with them, but that's exactly what she did, approaching them with a hand in her pocket. A weapon?

Worse was in her other hand. Black Stag? That stuff was nasty. Though, as Clementine eyed her up and down, he decided that she did seem like the type to drink it. At the very least, the type to pretend that she did. Tough girl, huh?

When she spoke, he realized that she was unlikely to be putting on a front about it. He also realized that he had probably missed a lot more than he could learn in a night. How long had everyone else gotten to prepare? The 'Heart'? What? She acted like they should be able to understand her little friend's chirping, too.

When she started talking about levels and purifying cores, he decided that now would be as good a time as any to come clean about his experience. Optimal, even. She seemed frustrated at their lack of experience, which might have been intimidating to some, but he knew it would be worse to try and keep bullshitting his way through this, and if he came forward about it first he may imbue some confidence in his... new aquaintences. Confidence enough to lay their own shortcomings out of the table, some of them at least.

"I'm afraid I haven't the slightest idea what you're talking about." Clementine shook his head softly, eyes closed and brows knit ruefully. "Truth be told, I was only made aware of," he gestured vaguely, raising a delicate hand in the air, "this last night. I'm not entirely sure what's going on, or what I'm meant to be doing here. And I've certainly never 'purified a core'-- at least, I don't think I have" he raised a perfectly manicured pointer finger to his chin and looked to the sky in a show of consideration.

Seren Raynes || Mercury

Mercury looks a bit puzzled when Gaia compliments her pet. How does she know what my familiar looks like..? "Thank you", Neon speaks up from behind her, giving Mercury quite the jolt. They flutter forward, drawing closer to Gaia in the hopes of even more admiration from her side. Mercury doesn't give it much thought, as her attention gets drawn to another display of magik powers.

She catches herself smiling; she is quite enjoying this meeting as an opportunity to get to know some new people. She wonders if she might know any of them from school.

The amiable mood changes however when a new girl enters the scene. Mercury raises an eyebrow at her rowdy introduction or interruption rather. Oh god... Don't tell me she's a hero, too...

As the sour smell of tobacco and alcohol enter her nostrils, she does her best not to pull a face of disgust. She despises these kind of people; the complete opposite of her. No manners, no efforts to seem even the littlest bit nice, giving in to substances that are bad for your health and being very open about it as well... Probably the type to not care about contributing to society either. So why on earth was she chosen to become a Magik Hero?

The girl continues to snap at them, mentioning concepts completely new to Mercury, and apparently to some of the other heroes as well. This new girl's arrogance was really starting to get on her nerves. Besides, Mercury is slightly frustrated at herself for not knowing what the girl is talking about. She tries to keep a calm composure, but her irritation gets the best of her. She flinches when the can of Black Stag implodes in the other girl's hand, spraying its contents all over her and any heroes standing nearby. Her eyes grow big. Did I just do that..?! Her moment of excitement is only short as she realizes she is now probably in a lot of trouble.

Clair | Esper Princess [_____]

It seemed like the conversation reached the everyone say something nice about each other lol oh no you point. For the second time in the conversation Clair opened her mouth to respond and got cut off this time by someone blasting the stereo approaching. As if that wasn’t bad enough the beater up car had some tacky sign for that fast food restaurant. What was their slogan? A rolling wok gathers no dross or something. Thanks to the information Moki installed on the app Clair knew at least normal people wouldn’t be able to recognize them so and wouldn’t need to worry about people thinking she was a part of some subpar larping group.

The woman that emerged from the vehicle was exactly the type Clair would peg to own it. She honestly didn’t know where to start judging her. The fact she didn’t lock her car? The day drinking or assumedly driving under the influence? The fact she has such little self-love she was drinking booze from a can, at least splurge for a bottle and have some class about it. The worst thing though was how she called Moki a rat. Also, Moki was more white than purple so.

Given the bitter smell rolling off of the woman it wasn’t surprising she had a bitter personality as well. She was a magik hero as well judging by the familiar thing she had. Her virtue must be something like individualism or independence. At least it seemed like the words find your own sparkle or be who you want to be wouldn’t cross her lips. The feeling of not wanting to work in a team was mutual to say the least.

Clair bit back a retort about aligning their chakras would next after purifying their core as the can of black stage the woman held imploded. Even though she was not in the splash distance Clair manipulated the scarf to drop any theoretical droplets that headed her way.

“With how the paint by numbers explination Moki gave us last night has gone,” Clair said shooting a look to everyone since it seemed Prinzipe spoke for most of them,” I can see why we only received the most basic information.”

nina/gaia

Gaia was growing a bit impatient with the introductions, everyone was lovely and all, but she wanted to get some training in. She wanted to improve already and get more information. She was anxious to actually get started. Nobody had made a new example of their power either, which was also partially irking Gaia. She wanted information on the team she’d be working with. Even if they didn’t know their powers, she would prefer if they communicated that. Gaia’s least favorite thing was being blindsided, even when it was good.

Gaia’s thought process was interrupted when she heard loud music approaching from a short distance. Gaia remained silent as she watched the car approach the team with an expression of curiosity and caution. A woman with bleached hair stepped out of the car after a few moments, holding a bottle and something in her pocket.

Gaia didn’t peg the woman as a magik hero at first, but the more she spoke the more she realized that she was likely a veteran of sorts. More experienced than them, in any case. And that was enough to get Gaia to listen.

A tiny creature appeared to the group from behind the woman’s legs and she peered down at it with interest. The petting kind of interest. Little guy, little guy. However, before Nina could be unsettled by the smell of cigarette and alcohol the woman said something curious.

Apparently, they were supposed to understand Tiny. Gaia’s attention quickly returned to the woman as a realization crossed the older girl’s face. Judging by her reaction, there seems to be a lot we didn’t know. Gaia was now much more inclined to listen to what this person was telling them. Hoping she was here to fill the gaps.

She did mention a lying piece of shit, and Gaia felt a bit bad for assuming that she was talking about Moki. But she was probably right. So either the woman was irritated on behalf of her and the new team about Moki lying to them about something. Or, the more likely option, Moki lied to her to get her to come here. Maybe about the heart she mentioned earlier? Did Moki trick her into coming here so she would have to play mentor to their new group instead?

Those were the most like ideas in Gaia’s mind. Gaia didn’t think speaking was necessary when Prinzipe already gave a pretty good rundown of their knowledge. That being said, shortly after he finished speaking, the bottle she held imploded in her hand. Gaia flinched and stepped back, that did Gaia no good, as she was pretty close to the new arrival and ended up partially soaked anyways. She honestly looked like a kicked puppy for a second. Gaia looked at the other members of the group with a confused expression, judging by Mercury’s wide eyes, she was the one responsible. Gaia didn’t want to be mad, but she didn’t think it was smart to explode the possessions of someone more experienced than you. Gaia paid little mind that she was kinda caught in the crossfire. She didn’t matter. What mattered was the woman’s willingness to help them after this.

“Ah, sorry, some of us don’t have much control over our powers either.” Gaia spoke, sounding sincerely apologetic. Gaia didn’t actually feel too bad about it, she didn’t think it was a big deal. But she really wanted information out of this woman.

Clementine flinched slightly at the sound of the can exploding, closing his eyes soon enough to not get any alcohol in them. So that was good, at least. On the downside, he had just been sprayed with what was probably his least favourite alcoholic drink. It couldn't have even been that peach wine he liked so much, or a Smirnoff? Bummer.

He was initially angry at the woman, thinking that she had carelessly clenched her can in anger, or worse, deliberately wet the group because she was displeased with their lack of experience. However, he noticed Gaia looking at a wide-eyed Mercury, and then immediately apologizing for the fact that some of them couldn't control their powers. It was easy enough to put two and two together.

A more pressing detail caught his attention: everything was pink. Purple? Everything was tinted. It was then that he realized, that it wasn't that the droplets were so small that he couldn't really feel them. He wasn't actually wet. Something had protected him, there was some kind of force field surrounding him. Had he done that? Or maybe someone else in the group had saved him? This new mystery woman, maybe? Looking around the group, he didn't see anyone looking like they were casting something on him. He realized too late that he neglected to mask his shock, and it was probably clear to everyone that, if he had indeed done this himself, he wasn't aware that he had that ability.

This was so fucking surreal.

"Will you come to my funeral when I die?"

Her voice was always so calm, so pleasant, gentle, and even "motherly". Yet what she speaks of is always so fascinatingly morbid.

Kiva would rather play her video games than entertain those ideas.

"No."

The child answered rather plainly.

"I don't think anyone would. I think you deserve to die alone."

The child continued. It was certainly something a child would say, Kiva's hindsight tells her, it was an undeniably childish way to answer that question.

The woman didn't seem to be fazed, she even laughed gently, like a mother who's child just showed her a butterfly on their hand in the middle of a family picnic.

"Oh dear, are you trying to insult me? That's rather trite, isn't it?"

"Kiva, I am l'etranger to this world, you must try harder if you want to find the words to offend me."

"Kiva, many people die surrounded by others, yet I think many of them died alone regardless."

"Kiva, you are flattering me, I would be happy to die alone, least I fade with some dimwit's clamorous mockery."

"Kiva, you should come to my funeral, I'm sure you'll find it fun. There will be a parade, with plenty of food, and hoards of cheering people relishing in my demise."

"Kiva, don't lie to yourself."

"Kiva, one day you'll understand that it's beautiful. The benign indifference of death, of the universe."

"I hope you can find happiness, my daughter."

There was a certain memory that was stirring. Kiva rarely dreamt, and felt nostalgia even less, but somehow, perhaps it was due to the strange nature of this world, her memories has been stirred up. There were some words that she didn't really listen to, drowned out by a small cacophony of the clicking of buttons and cheesy 8-bit sound effects. It forced her to face something that she never wanted to think about: perhaps the way she was living was predetermined, predetermined by someone that was so close yet so far in her life.

Doppelwalker buried her face in her hand for a few moments, she had expected something to happen, but the sensory overload of whatever psychological attacks that this world uses was more intensive than she had anticipated. There was a lot of jumbled thoughts mixed together, many of them seemingly tailored to be unpleasant. But aren't pleasantries something subjective all along?

"Chry- Chrysothemis......"

The floating lenses with a serpentine frame dropped to the ground when the mental attack happened, and it stacked up and reverted into a coiled up snake-like creature. It didn't seem as concerned as it should be at its master's pain, instead it even seem to be enjoying it, rather twistedly. Its excitement only perked up even more once it heard Doppelwalker muttering something, it sounded like, a name?

"Ha! I knew it! I knew you'd come to beg me to help you some day! That must be my true name, isn't it? Chrysothemis, I like the sound of it, much more refined than those lil pet names bestowed to the others." With a lash of the snake-like creature's tail, the clone that Doppelwalker sent out to scout the bridge detonated through the familiar's magic.

"Ugh......my head......What the hell...is that place..." With a dry cough Doppelwalker slowly got up, trying to brush away what seemed like dark dots clouding her vision. Although a bit disorientated, she wasn't even sure if that was an issue with her vision or something is physically blinding her. "I remembered...something......"

"Well well well, good thing you remembered my name! Now remember that it was me! Lord Chrysothemis that saved your pathetic little soul from your own stupidity." The familiar pointed its tail at the still groggy human.

"H-huh...Chrysothemis...that's the name of my m-"

Doppelwalker was about to say something, but she looked at the familiar, who seems to be in the process of slithering in place because of happiness or something, and decided to withhold her comment. It might be better to keep that snake thing in a good mood until they get through this whole ordeal. She looked at the bridge, which was doing some extremely unnatural floating, and it's making her recovering headache get worse by the second. There doesn't seem to be another obvious way in anymore, at least not for now.

Moki observed Dopplewalker and the few heroes that had gathered around her in an attempt to help something they could not. They patiently waited, and soon enough the mist began to dissolve until nothing remained. Dopplewalker had successfully managed to repel the attack.

"Excellent work Dopplewalker and Chrysothemis!" Moki congratulated in a chipper tone, swaying their tail back and forth, "The bond between familiar and hero is a precious thing! Actually, Moki should report that this particular bond is quite weak, but Moki is pleased to see some progress!"

As usual, the purple and white creature couldn't resist an opportunity to run its mouth and jumped to answer Dopplewalker's question. Even if clearly she had been asking it no nobody, and was probably not in the best state to process much information.

"Of course! Lairs are not always symmetrical, and some areas have more concentrated Dark than others. Some call these areas Heavy Dark, Corruption, or Miasma based on the most recent survey. Like appendages of a member of the cnidaria phylum, the power of a heart can be extended into certain areas in order to better capture prey! Although it is not unusual for Lairs to have traps, Moki believes this is one of the few Lonely Lairs that has used this particular technique most often seen in Lies, Manipulation, and other similar veins within the same Concept. Quite fascinating! Please exercise caution! Dopplewalker was quite fortunate that this was a lair of Loneliness~"

Moki tilted their head to the side and looked off into the distance. Their ears twitched forward, standing up to their full height like a rabbit sensing for danger. "Oh dear. Please excuse Moki! Moki shall return shortly! In the meantime, Moki wishes all heroes good luck!"

With this said, the purple creature jumped into a nearby phone and disappeared in a puff of sparkles. It was amazing just how quiet the landscape seemed without their annoying cheerful chatter. Nothing but the sound of a dry wind rustling the dead branches of the nearby trees and whistling through the chasm.

Across the chasm, something stirred along the edge of the castle walls. It crawled down the broken bricks with all the unnatural speed and agility of a spider. The outline of it was twitchy and unclear, as if made of scribbles. For lack of a better word, it looked like a big blob of black scribbles with stick legs jutting out. It wasn't alone either. A mass of scribbles, smaller than the first blob, soon followed suit and scaled down the side of the distant castle.

They were incredible fast, with the leader of the swarm soon reaching the chasm, yet instead of falling into the pit the whole swarm completely disappeared. It was at this exact moment that the heroes could hear the screeches and shrieks from directly behind them.
Thick enough to be confused as a cloud, a swarm of claws and teeth emerged from thin air to surround the heroes gathered near the bridge. They must have been obscured in some way, because the heroes could have neither heard nor seen them in any way other than their weird reflection in the giant 'mirror'. There were so many that it became hard to see any hero that was not within 3 meters of each other. This almost seemed deliberate, as they quickly moved between the separated groups of heroes before falling on top of them in a unified mass of claws and fangs. It was a tactic that Sol Invictus and Dopplewalker would recognize from their harrowing night at [The Neighborhood].
Swarm is made out of these lovely lads!
They have very sharp claws that will leave minor scratches, but add up with multiple attacks or if left alone. They work as a pack, so some will bite onto ankles and arms to slow down a hero while others attack. They are constantly either shrieking or laughing. Killing one will cause the creature to 'poof' and then reform a few moments later. The only way they seem to die for good is if they are attacked by someone other than their target, making it impossible to kill them when alone.

Currently the heroes are separated as follows:
    1. Dopplewalker, Twilight, Gleam and Prism
    2. Sol Invictus
    3. Earthquake and Nexus
    4. Candace

Likewise, Dopplewalker was the only one who had experience with the true nature of the attack. The leader (or leaders) were nowhere in sight, which meant it had chosen a target. Just like the battle with Potentia, the creature was likely hidden and about to strike.

Nexus had been giving helpful pointers to Earthquake one moment, and the next something had grabbed him within its twisted claws. Struggle as he may, the creature's only response to resistance was to clamp down its misshapen fangs into his flesh and drag him into the swarm and out of sight, leaving Earthquake alone. The beast was much larger than Nexus, about the size of two horses combined. Due to this, Nexus was completely lifted off the ground, dragged only by the fangs that firmly pinned his shoulder and most of his upper torso. Each of the fangs were about the length of a finger, and magikal blood seeped from between them like sticky sap.

It moved quickly towards the woods (in the opposite direction of the bridge), crashing through dead branches and dried grass. Nexus could see the ground zooming beneath him and could hear the creature's ragged breathing. It smelled like thick mold and was covered in oily hair. He could also feel his strength seeping out like the blood from his wound. Dark clouds flickered in his vision, hurting the back of his mind.

Nexus was not the only one to be abducted. It would seem that Candace had also been chosen. A similar creature to the leader, albeit smaller, had began to drag Candace away from the group and into the dead woods.

"Wait, no! Don't you dare!" Prism shouted, quickly breaking off from her group, spear at the ready. The monsters quickly fell upon her, tearing and biting, covering almost every inch of her in a swarming mass. Yet in her desperation, she braced herself for a stunt.

Tossing her spear ahead of her, she cleaved a crystalline path through the swarm, just enough for her to tear away from the grip of her opposition and break free. Blood like melted pearls seeped from the heavy scratches across her body, and one of her eyes had been slashed, but Prism's mind focused only on the task ahead of her. Failure was not an option. A silent duty she had assigned herself, a diligence to see it through. Wounds were merely a punishment for lack of responsibility.

Hands slick with her own blood, Prism grabbed her spear where it lay and sprinted after the monster dragging Candace away. The smaller monsters trailed her, snapping just at her heels, but she seemed to pay them no mind.

Note! If a player wishes to chase after either of the two monsters, they can do so at the cost of suffering a moderate-severe injury that may cripple them in some way (as Prism displayed). Choose carefully. Otherwise, they will need to handle their immediate threat as the more safer option and then run off possibly as a group. If you've been snatched please contact me for further instructions.
