Children of Villainy
- It is generally accepted that the Tyranny began when King Henrich and Queen Patil died on a hunt. It was an accident, or so everyone believed. Prince Neddeir came home from his travels to his young wife Inina, and the two mourned the loss of the beloved King and Queen. The next morning, Prince Neddeir was crowned king, and the princess was crowned Queen. It was then that everything seemed to spiral downwards. First, King Neddeir institutionalized forced labor of any homeless or jobless individual, removed almost all courtiers, nobility, and any non-essential staff (those that were removed were sent along with the forced laborers to various mines, shipping yards, factories, or military). Once his military was large enough, he ignored any treaties made and went to war with the neighboring country of Quihiri. In a short war that lasted four years, he conquered and pillaged Quihiri, creating a nervous tension between Fareen and other nations. Having proved his military's might, Fareen signed treaties with Erso, Tatalis, and Wergsta, essentially stating that Fareen would not attack them as long as they provided taxes. Erso contended against this, and Fareen crushed them. Tatalis and Wergsta were quick to fall into line.
Within Fareen, the citizens were split between several major groups. Most supported the wars of Quihiri and Erso, seeing the wealth and strength it brought their nation. However, there was a growing resistance group made of the forced laborers that disagreed with King Neddeir's treatment of them and other nations. They were simply known as "The Resistance" and it was whispered throughout the kingdom rumors of unrest and thoughts of rebellion.
Throughout all of this, Queen Inina appeared to be the savior of the resistance. She organized giant food stores to be smuggled out of the castle, under her husband's nose. She encouraged talk of dissent and rebellion, making it clear that she would help however she could. The Resistance truly believed that she was an ally, a member of the court that King Neddeir would never suspect. However, as the years of the Tyranny continued, the situation worsened. Any attempt to organize and rise against the King was met with shadowy assassins killing any leaders or members of Resistance groups. Hope was crushed, and public opinion turned away from the King to the Stoneknife guild, where the assassins were from. However, no one could touch them, and it was quickly obvious that without the Stoneknife guild, the King wouldn't be able to stop them.
It is assumed that this opinion is what made Queen Inina reveal her true role in the Tyranny. The Resistance was gaining strength again, and there was one particular meeting where the Resistance leader received a letter. "From the Stoneknife Guild. We will no longer support Averti's Crown. Where would you like us to strike first?"
After that, the Resistance found themselves a powerful new ally. Stoneknife was quick to implicate Queen Inina as the true ruling force in Averti. It took many months before the Resistance leaders believed Stoneknife, and even then it took a final showdown at the White Ice Citadel in Averti before it was abundantly clear who was in charge. Queen Inina was killed, overrun by sheer numbers, but not before she killed Mary Polaskis, the wife of Ricky Polaskis, leader of the Resistance.
General Daveedi was also killed in that final battle. The last of Queen Inina's government officials, a man named Bihaal Dyrone, surrendered and was later executed by Resistance Leaders.
Ricky Polaskis became King Polaskis, and he established a court with the other leaders of the Resistance. It's been through many, many changes, and they've created treaties and payment plans with the other nations in order to repair the damaged relationships between them. Everyone has been rebuilding from riots and battles that happened between the Queen's soldiers and the Resistance militia. Orphans have been scattered across the land, and King Polaskis has been organizing a system for these orphans to be adopted into families across Fareen.
With King Polaskis' military past, he kept the military roughly the same as it was during the Tyranny. It's similarly organized, except now the soldiers receive a good pay, and no one is forced to stay. Many soldiers do simply because the army is the only life they know. Because the army stayed the same (the forced soldiers in the Queen's army switched sides and remained in the army under King Polaskis), it remained relatively the same size and tenacity. Because of this, the other nations didn't try to take advantage of the switch in governments (or even the first few years when King Polaskis was still learning how best to rule).
Because the grand majority of laborers were allowed to go home, they went back to their small towns and villages and started simply living again. The economy was hit hard in the first few years, but its been recovering nicely. Because of this, the small villages have been able to sustain themselves. A few cities remain, but they aren't nearly the size they were during the Tyranny.
Trade has mostly centered around the ports. Fareen has been known for its shipbuilding, and so that industry (along with several major trade agreements that were heavily amended) sustained Fareen's economy. The small villages will occasionally trade with each other, but for the most part trade and merchants pass between the four major cities, as well as along Merchant's Road. Merchant's Road connects Averti, Braffield, Arinzye, and finally leads to the Fields of Silence. It's taken by merchants who travel to Braffield before turning and heading back down the coast towards Averti. People from small villages who need trade will often pay a merchant caravan to come specifically to their village, and so they'll meet the merchant caravans in Braffield or Arinzye to lead them back to their villages.
Please note that I am not a economist, a historian, or a politician, and this is my attempt at building a world. If you have a more realistic idea of what would've happened, I'd love to discuss it with you.- Locations within Fareen
Braffeld: A small city of only 500. This tiny town mostly farms corn and wheat. During the revolution, it was razed to the ground, but its economy's back up again. It is a meeting point for the Merchant’s Road, as well as serves as a makeshift regional government for villages that need to settle disputes between each other.
Arinzye: This is a trade city on the river Vor, the biggest in Fareen. Some would be a little leery of calling it a city, as it's only got about 3,000 inhabitants, but trade is definitely booming. It’s also been called the “Record City” as it holds the largest libraries in the kingdom. Arinzye is also where many of the orphans went after the wars were over, and records of them were kept in the city.
Forenkig: North of Forenkig is this mining town. Several gold and iron mines are still operational, and a few farmers work here as well. During the revolution, it was the site of a major battle, and most of the gold prospectors were veterans of the war.
The Fields of Silence: These fields lay just west of Arinzye. It's said the spirits of those who fought in the war still wander here, and there are odd happenings afoot at night in the fields.
Averti: The capital of Fareen. Home to over 500,000 inhabitants, this was the seat of Inina Falconspeare and her ill-fated husband. It is famed for its citadel, which is likened to "white ice", and here the revolutionaries set up the new form of government.
More details of locations to be added as we encounter them.
The pull, for those characters who have senses of direction, is pulling you west. And for those who have maps, you feel that you are heading to the the Fields of Silence, and that you must get there. And that's all the detail you get.
