Bardbarian, the Divine Chordia of Concordia
Discord and TeamSpeak are the two, main external apps which had been prominently used for RpNation. A group of mine uses Slack, which is very similar to Discord. Skype is also a thing.
Can any of those (or any other chat) be embedded into a forum and used? Discord can be embedded but you can't use it on the page it's embedded on.

I'm not aware of how embed-friendly these applications are. You would likely have to pay a fee to embed a chat onto your site.
