how longs someone who joins the realms army in training most likely?

its QUITE likely they trained with weapons before that if only in childs games if its what they wanted to do...

A raw recruit could expect 6 to 12 months training.

However, times have changed, Legions are falling more under House control, some have been destroyed. They may well wave that once ability is shown.

Any one with some proven Dragon Blood in them could expect a reduced time as well.

Is that in one of the books?  Or something you use based off history?

I'd say they get some stuff and are assigned to the light infantry.

If they are lucky their legion does garrison duty and they can pick up some things, if they are not lucky their legion goes on combat duty and they do learning by doing.

I know nothing from canon but I've always kind of assigned the newbs to the front line infantry, throwing javelins, manning spear walls, etc.

Legions would probably self-contain their own boot camps and training for the common infantryman.  Or maybe very basic training on the blessed isle and then send them to their legion where they learn more.

I'd say the Marian Legions from ancient Rome would be a good historical reference to base any assumptions off. Roman soldiers were expected to carry all their own kit as well as share responsibility for their unit's (a group of eight soldiers) camping gear.

Soldiers don't really have the time to be lugging bags around. A legion doesnt consist of just soldiers remember, there'll be a whole host of support staff and hangers on, including a large number of pack animals. Soldiers should concern themselves with soldiering. Leave baggage to the slaves. Senior officers most likely have orderlies to carry their personal luggage, but that's about as far as it goes.

I think you'd find a little research on the topic, even if you just went link hopping on wikipedia for thirty minutes, immensely beneficial.

Soldiers did receive training before joining active duty, and drilling continued for their entire term of service. 6-12 months however, is a huge over estimation, especially since realm legions are probably less disciplined than their Marian equivalents (barring the effect of training charms of course, I'm not sure how the DBs fare in this field).

I'd say 6-8 weeks at most.

With Rome though the legions quite often had large permanent camps where they were based almost all the time.  I could see people getting trained at the legions base and never having a boot camp.

My views are based on history, I am only thinking Realm Legions here and taking into account officers as well as soldiers.

I would see the Realm Legions as highly trained as any ancient world example. Also I should have made clear as others have mentioned, training was often done near the front line or on the march.

But how long would it take before the rest of the Legion consdiered the new recruit as being a fully trained member. Still recon about 6 to 12 months. You have to remember unless an officer you may not even realise you are no longer a recruit, you dont get a certificate!
