Advice/Help Character help wanted

I think everyone has a different way of making a character. Personally, the first thing I do is look find an image/Face-claim. From there, I start developing a personality for this person. I can't work without an image. There's no way. After the image, and personality next there comes their history. I feel like history is to explain why they are the way they are. Why is he a troubled teen? Why is he so closed off?

But I think personality is the most important one and I tend to spend a lot of time on that. Because in the end, it determines how they are going to react in a particular situation. While Roleplaying, I always go back and read their personality and think about what would they do?
This works for me, but it might not work for you. I have experience on another site I used to roleplay on my first character sucked (HE HAD NO FLAVOR). Your first character is going to suck, and it's ok.

I always find that for me it's easier to write a new character if I have an established setting and if I've seen others' characters. If you want to join a group RP here it might be helpful to look at the characters people have already made and ask yourself "what kind of character would have a fun dynamic with these types of characters? What type of person is this group missing?" (A cast of brooding loners could maybe use an extroverted optimist type to bring them out of their shell, for example) Answering that will give you a personality and concept and you can expand from there to figure out the character's backstory and why they are the way they are. That's what I do!

Greetings Furcatgirl Furcatgirl !

It depends on how deep you want to dive into the character creation process, and how "real" you want the character to feel.

If you're going into RP's that don't require much character depth in the character sheet submissions (if there even is one), then you can simply come up with a name, maybe (cause it's optional) add a picture to give an idea of what they look like, and describe their basic bio such as when they were born, what their early life was like (cause formative years are important in shaping who someone becomes), and a quick summary of how they got to where they are now.

If you want to really deep dive into a character and make them as deep and realistic as possible to the point where you could swear this was a real person whose life was simply being recounted like in a biographical novel or TV Documentary, then the all-important question to ask about every detail you come up with is "why?"

For example, let's say you have an idea for a character and you decide on the name Reginald. Why Reginald? Is it a common name where they come from? Was it a spur of the moment name chosen by the parents? Was it a name both parents agreed on? Did one oppose to it but relent after enough discussion? Or is it just a name you liked and wanted to use whether or not there's an "in-story" reason for the name being chosen?

Simply asking "why" will open a host of other questions about the singular topic at that moment. And the more question you can think of to answer, the deeper and more realistic your character will be because you've got so much detail ready and waiting in the wings to use for them as the story progresses.

"What's the use of coming up with all that information though?" You may be asking. Glad you asked. It's because all of this information can, and likely will, play a role in your character's decision making process or become part of a recalled memory at some point in time in the RP.

For example, with the name thing we mentioned earlier. Does your character like their name? If not, that's a good thing to include right from the get-go in the RP on your first post. Including a sentence right at the start of someone calling them by name and having them react in disgust saying "I told you to call me Regi!" suggests that the character really doesn't like their full name and prefers a shortened version or nickname. There's no need to use any narrative text like He hated his name. It was such a lame and boring name compared to others they (his parents) could have chosen for him. Just putting that one line of dialogue where he's barking to use Regi instead of Reginald sends the message that he doesn't like his full name and that's a little element and nugget of his character that will serve you throughout the entire experience.

Hopefully this was helpful!

Cheers!
