The Upir

Many dread the passing shadows of the winged Upir soaring over the city's slums. But only few know that these sentinels are far from the worst vampirekind has to offer.
For there are certain few individuals whose very presence could destroy a mortal soul. And they are the true enemy.
They are the head of this serpent...But endless fights for dominance within Vampire society means that if one head is severed, several would rise to take its place.

There is no true way to ever destroy the Upir by simply decimating their numbers.
For each of them is as terrible and vile as the next.

Urlah Éjszaka, the Szàrny Wingmaster
Among the more ruthless Upir masters, Urlah counts as the most violent ones.
Unlike the other clans, the Szàrny had long since lost their founding elder and have went through more revisions than the more traditional pillars of vampirekind.
Their lack of bloodmother means that each individual is ranked equally and only results matter.

And Urlah makes sure to provide those.
He is the highest ranking Szàrny Upir and commands his flock of ravenous Sentinels with a very literal Iron fist, having lost it in the event that made him infamous, and elevated him to the rank of Wingmaster.
He is brutally efficient and cares little about his more aristocratic kin that would rather spend their immortal lives reaping the fruits of his work.

He knows the Ellenàllàs and hos they operate and is regarded as the one Upir that should never even suspect the involvement of Ellenàllàs as he is quick to make an example out of any suspicious human.

Mistress Serjival, the velvet Queen
Vampiredom had always associated itself with the noble, with aristocracy, with the many extravagances of royalty.
And Mistress Serjival makes sure her kin never has to endure a single night of melancholy, of hunger, of uneventful courtly hours.
She counts among the eldest Upir, having been the one bloodmother who had started the Clan of the Ravasz.

She is notorious for picking humans off the streets, those she deems too beautiful, too pure to waste away in the slums.
Be it children, girls, boys, men or women, the objects of her obsession rarely live longer than her fleeting interest in grooming them before presenting them to her ever-growing court of Upir nobility.
But few ever join the ranks, most just serve as unique nightly attractions...treats that will be bled dry by the end of the night.

Lady Louverniel
One of the first consorts of Mistress Serjival, and first Knight of her guard, Lady Louverniel is one of the few hand-picked Vampire Gouverneurs that deal with matters their pureblood masters deem to be too insignificant to require their own attention.
Louverniel is begrudgingly respected by vampiredom...and revered by those humans who strive to follow her lead.
To become humanborn tools of their Upir Masters, to prove their loyalty, and be gifted with immortality and unholy might.

She is the enforcer of her clan's will and has been granted the gift of charade by her mistress, making her a deadly adversary and causing the Ellenàllàs to fear even their own shadows.

Mishika
Little is known about the Upir by the name of Mishika, but one thing is certain; she is one of the few Sôtétek left.
Vile, pureborn vampires that see no use in terrorizing the human population, nor seem interested in the extravagant balls their kin partake in.
And yet Mishika is seen, or rather caught between the time it takes for a heart to beat twice, observed how she looms over the city of men, hangs from the dark towers of castle Felhôk.

Seen observing the lunar cycles and the dim light of the stars.

Whatever her kin seeks to achieve, the Ellenàllàs made it their chief objective to make sure to stop the Sôtétek's schemes.

The Ellenàllàs
Elusive protectors of humankind, the Ellenàllas have existed for as long as brave men and women wielded the crudest weapons in defense of the ideals they swore to protect. They operate in smaller sub-organizations rallying under the same banner, each city and town having their own goal and area of expertise.
And then there are those Ellenàllàs pf Sôtet Barlang; either brave or foolish enough to operate in the heart of vampiredom, these humans strive to strike the Upir where it hurts them most, sowing hope in those living in the slums and fear and contempt in the dark hearts of their tormentors.

Gouverneur Benjhamin
One of the very few Gouverneurs not under the Upir's wing, Benjhamin governs the southernmost sector of the city.
One of the only friends the Ellenàllàs have in high places, he tries to mislead his vampiric masters and gather as much information as possible for his human brothers and sisters to use against the dark imperators.
He is no fighter, but nonetheless one of their most important allies in the wars to come.

Enya Lamera
The owner of one of three public healer abodes, Enya is one of the last standing pillars of human society, allowing those with too little coin or no other family to be given the things they need to survive.
On the surface she runs an establishment like every other; dealing with the distribution of medicine, surgeries, even supporting the more human ways of bloodletting and thus working closely with the Upir...

And yet, she manages a massive smuggler network that supplies the Ellenàllàs with the weapons, tools and other useful material to combat the Upir.
She lost two of her children to the Upir, and her daughter Senna suffers from anemia because of the vampires' indiscriminate, brutal bloodletting.

Allester Veliav
The closest one would come to a de facto "Leader" of the Ellenàllàs, Allester, or "the Gray Hound" as he is known to the Upir, is the current head of Sôtek Barlang's Ellenàllàs division.
He has lived long enough to know most secrets of the trade and has steadily been bolstering the numbers of recruits for his...no everyone's cause.
Kind, supportive, wise and yet stern and resilient as the very Birches he tends to in his moments of respite, Allester stands with his brothers and sisters against the yoke of vampiredom.

For hope never dies. And he bloody makes sure it stays that way.
But unlike his immortal foes, time does little for his health, and each passing year the burden of his position wears heavier on him.

Home town/Origin: Sôtet Barlang

As a mortal born in Sôtet Barlang Fergus would never escape fear. Perpetual dread is the immutable condition of those at the bottom of the food chain - which is where humanity had fallen. Like wolves ruling a flock of sheep the Upir were simultaneously mankind's masters and predators. It was a wicked arrangement, but fortune favors the strong, not the decent.

Because he had always known oppression Fergus never thought to resent it. He followed the example of his parents who accepted their pitiful lot in life. His father, a withdrawn and hardworking man, earned a living as a talented carpenter. When his sons were of age he would often bring them (or drag in some cases) to his worksites. Of the two boys it was Abbas - the younger by three years - who took to carpentry like a duck to water. Fergus never shared his brother's interest in woodwork, which kept his eyes open for other paths in life.

One day their father brought them to a job for an apothecary, owned and operated by the mercurial Mr. MacCùga. It was there, in the shop of bubbling potions, tinned balms, jarred salves, and potted herbs; that Fergus discovered what would be his calling - medicine craft. Recognizing the young Quigg's enthusiasm for chemistry and herbalism Mr. MacCùga offered the boy an apprenticeship. Fergus jumped on the opportunity, and to his relief, never worked with his father and brother again.

He learned much as a journeyman apothecary. Mr. MacCùga lent out his treasured tomes on botony, entomology, physiology, chemistry, and alchemy, as well as other disciplines. Fergus demonstrated a knack for the profession. He was particularly delighted by experimentation, and created four original remedies before his eighteenth birthday.

His father, proud of the man his eldest son had become, was killed when Fergus was twenty. The murder resulted from an argument over not being paid the agreed upon price for a carpentry job. He was struck down by his own hammer when his back was turned.

Fergus coped with his loss by burying himself in his work. But it wasn't any formula or recipe which would significantly lift his spirits, that came from the love of a woman.

He was twenty-four when she found her way into his shop. She was shy, short, dark-haired, and freckled. And she returned to shop and chat often after she noticed her apothecary couldn't keep his eyes off her. Her name was Elspeth, and the two were married that summer.

Shortly after they wed Mr. MacCùga passed away. Ready to go into business on his own Fergus purchased his shop and renamed it 'Mr. Quigg's Potions & Medicines.' That's when he was finally invited into one of the region's oldest guilds - the Potio Forum, a fraternity of apothecaries, of which he is still a member today.

Having settled down Elspeth and her husband tried for a baby. Unfortunately for the couple conception proved to be a nearly insurmountable challenge. After years of failure Fergus finally fathered a daughter at the age of thirty-four. They named her Fiona; she was the only child they would have.

Life in the shadow of immortals was horrifying, but despite his monstrous masters, Fergus managed to create some genuine happiness between his family and work. This worried the apothecary as much as it pleased him. He had come to learn in his world, there are those who can spot contentment in the same way a hungry owl can spy a mouse. They are the wicked and the cruel. And make no mistake, they will do their damndest to claw every ounce of joy out of your heart.

One night, when Fiona was still a young girl, Fergus was forced to work late. At this point he had moved his mother in with them; she was senile and needed constant care. Elspeth, who was use to having her husband's help by sundown, told her daughter a few too many bedtime stories which allowed her mother-in-law to slip out. She was confused and believed it was time for her to return home. If only she could have remembered that her "home" now belonged to someone else.

Elspeth rushed out to scour the city's dark streets the moment she discovered her mistake. Tragically for Fergus's wife someone found his mother first. His name was Áldozat Véres, and he was a vampire.

The prowling Upir swooped down to confront the old woman when he overheard her crooning a heretical prayer. Worship of the old gods was forbidden by the immortals. Áldozat had her pinned against an alley wall when Elspeth cried out for mercy.

Accompanying Mood Music

Neighbors risked peeks from behind cracked shutters to watch the encounter unfold. Fergus's wife frantically explained that his mother's mind had grown feeble. And she blamed herself for giving her mother-in-law the opportunity to wander. Unbeknownst to Elspeth, Áldozat - even compared against his kind - was not a creature of pity. So despite her pleas he slayed the old woman with a single savage strike.

Elspeth, in a momentray lapse of self-control, struck the immortal across his shoulder. In response Áldozat seized and carried her into the night sky. And she was never seen again.

The destruction of his mother and true love was a seminal change for the apothecary. His grief was great, but so was his hatred. Hate for the world, for the Upir, and for men and women like him who had done nothing to change things. No longer would he accept this unchecked predation like his parents did. Like so many continue to do.

A change of heart so great can not be hidden from those closest to you. So after a reasonable mourning period he was approached by his oldest nephew Raghnall. He explained to Fergus that there was a clandestine alliance of brave men and women who acted against the immortals. They were known as the Ellenàllàs, and they believed in revolution.

Fergus Quigg was not a soldier. He didn't look or speak the way one generally imagines a hero to look and sound like. But he was creative. He was resourceful. And the monsters had changed him into a man of will. That was their mistake, because he would dedicate his life to making them regret that. He is still afraid, and he always will be, but now he fears submission more than death.
