Can I Be Popular Too?

Today had been a usual day for Ai-Bo. Even though it was the first day of school. Things would be as usual, she would meet up with her friends, chat, and then do her work. Or.. if there was a new kid, she'd get a bit more attention on why she was popular or how she popular. Ai-Bo had made sure to look cute today since it was the first day of school. She had been putting on her lip-gloss and then getting her bag ready for school.

Rei yawned and turned to see the sunlight from his window, he really didn't feel like going to school, even if it's the first day. He sighed as he scratched the back of his head and sits up. His room was dark but was lit up by the sunlight. He stretched out his arms and then looks at house next to his, a childhood friend lives there but he didn't even want to think about that day. He pulled his curtains down and he starts getting ready for school. Memories of middle school, it was like a dream that he was one a few months ago. He was now a high school student but that's not all that change.

He started making his way to school and then puts on his headphones to listen to some music. On the way to school, he tried avoiding making any kind of contact to anyone who knew him from his old school. He just didn't want to even talk to them, thinking they are just all the same, hiding their real intentions.

Ai-Bo had arrived at school and already met some new friends. However, she had been with some of her old friends as well. According to other people, she was the nicest out of the friends but she never took anything seriously. She had been chatting with friends, not really remembering her old childhood friend. Did he eve come to this school? That wasn't even on her mind. However, if she saw him, she'd definitely say hi. Ai-Bo had started to set up her locker, putting in all these useless things in there. Like a mirror, a dry-erase board so she can draw on it, etc. She was making it girly and trying to make it look cute so people can look.

After that, she had headed off to class. She looked over at her friend putting makeup on and the other drawing in their notebook with a pen that had a fluffy end. All Ai-Bo did was just check her schedule on her phone to see what classes she had.

Just the sight of the school makes him even stressed out already. Rei then goes in one of the buildings and then checked on which class he was assigned to and there it is, he saw his name on it as well, after that he goes to his locker and puts some the books he would read when he got bored and some notebooks as well. He noticed some girls were looking at him and even some guys, he didn't knew these people but he wondered what they were muttering about and even those girls, one even came to walk over to him but he just ignored and walked passed her while continuing to listen to his music. He then heads to his class and sits at the back, where there weren't much people, which was good for him.

Ai-Bo had been checking her schedule till she felt a tap on her shoulder. It was her friend, Kaiya, who was whispering to her. "That boy is pretty cute back there? You're single.. Go talk to him..!" She whispered. Ai-Bo had looked to where the boy was. She tried focusing on him and couldn't tell who is was until she took a double take. Wait a minute.. That's my neighbor Rei who I haven't seen in years! Wonder why he hasn't talked to me in a while.. Since she was excited, she wanted to talk to him. Ai-Bo quickly rushed over with a bright, cheery smile. She was excited to see him after so long. "Rei! Can you hear me?" She asked, noticing he had headphones in.

Rei was bust listening to his music and was about to get something to doodle on when he noticed a girl coming his way. And when he made eye contact with the girl, it surprised him to see a familiar face. It was Ai-Bo. Wait, is it really her? It couldn't be. When he looked at her more, he tried to avoid eye contact with her and tried to face the window. But when he thought that she was gone, she was still there. 'What is she doing here? Smiling like an idiot... can't she just bother someone else other than me...' he thought and sighed, he just wanted to be over with this as he soon face back to her and said "What?" he didn't want to speak to much so just a few words was fine with him.

Ai-Bo smiled lightly and waved to him. "It's been a long time since we've seen each other. I didn't know you'd be here! That's really awesome actually.. Anyway, I thought we could catch up! Y'know since we stopped talking to each other really." She said, not really taking note of him wanting to be alone or anything. Ai-Bo was just trying to be nice and she was also happy seeing him after a while. She had sat next to him and looked at him. "Can I sit with you at lunch?"

'Is she trying to be friendly with me again? This is so annoying... ' he thought and didn't even look at her cheerful smile. "Sorry, but I prefer to be alone than eat with some other people..." he answered flatly and was starting to remember how Ai-Bo did that nasty prank on him last time. It wasn't a good experience for him, it felt like eternity when he was inside that room. And he noticed some girls facing them, and it seems they were trying to listen on their conversation. "And those girls, your friends maybe, why don't you go and talk to them..." he said and laid his arms on the table and rested his head on top of his arms as he try to pretend he is asleep.

Ai-Bo tilted her head slightly when he told her that. Rather be alone than with other people? What's that supposed to mean? She thought to herself. However, she didn't say anything about it. "Well.. Those girls I've known for quite a long time. I wanted to talk to you since I haven't seen you in a while. Plus, I wanted to catch up. I don't know why we went quiet but let's start talking again!" She asked, getting her things for class, ready to leave.

'To catch up? Is she serious?' he lets out a sigh "Just go back to your friend will you Ai-Bo..." he insisted and shooed her away and when she was finally away from him he let out a sigh of relief. "Thank goodness..." he mumbled and turns off his music and puts his headphones back in his bag and takes out his notebooks for the first class they will be having. But then again, shouldn't it be like there was supposed to be a ceremony first before classes actually start? He got confused and then sees the teacher walking up the front and introduced herself as their adviser. After that, she told the class to fall in line, one for the boys and one for the girls. He was at the back and rather be alone instead be at the middle. He puts his hands in his pocket and starts walking. They were supposed to go to the school gym for the first ceremony of the year.

Ai-Bo sighed slightly when he asked her to go. However, she listened to him and went back to her desk, collecting her things as she went into a line to head towards the gym. There seemed to be a mix of a pep rally and a ceremony. The cheerleaders that came out were pretty, however.. Ai-Bo wasn't flexible. At all, whatsoever. She couldn't do a split, cartwheel, any of that. All she could do was run fast. She was great in track. Ai-Bo had focused on the rally but occasionally tried looking for Rei to see if she could find him. Maybe she can catch up with him after school especially since they live next to each other.

The principal calm down the students after the whole entertainment with the cheerleaders and also some band performed and welcomed the students to their new school. The principal started to say his long boring speech about having a great year for the students and to let them excel with their studies and whatnot. Rei sighed and decided to sneak away fro the crowd and walks out of the gym and goes to look for some room to be alone. He first went over to the classroom to get his headphones and then and walks up to the stairs where it ended up at a door to the rooftop. He opened it and it looked like this could be where he could hang out alone and just be in peace. There is wide space around him and felt the cool refreshing air. He smiled a bit and then walks over to the other side and then leans on the wall and puts on his headphones. "Finally... I'm alone.." he said and ended up lying down on the floor and closed his eyes.

Once the principal had settled everything down, Ai-Bo looked around for Rei however this time.. She couldn't find him at all. She didn't want to get in trouble on the first day to go looking for him. However, she was a bit surprised. Does Rei always wander even though he wasn't supposed to? Kind of weird.. She had been sitting down with her friends who had been talking about their up-coming classes. How some of the girls dreaded to go into the upcoming class while others were happy. All Ai-Bo was interested in were two things: Lunch and where Rei was.

Time passed by and it was already Lunch time and Rei bought some bread and also melon milk from the school cafeteria and then ignored every girl who tried to approach him or even talk. Even some guys tried to talk to him but to his hatred to even talk to one of them, he simply ignored them while he was wearing his headphones and goes to where he was and goes to the rooftop and surely enough, there was a sign no one was allowed to go in but he didn't care and just opened the door and closes the door quietly and goes to his usual spot. He sits down on the floor and leans on the wall and takes out the yakisoba bread from the plastic bag and unwraps it and starts eating it. Rei wasn't really the type to disobey rules, especially school rules when he was still in a child or in his elementary and middle school days but it all changed after that stupid of a prank.

Once the whole pep-rally was over, Ai-Bo had walked around to try to find Rei. However, he wasn't in sight at all. She was starting to get worried but she didn't have his number to call or text him. As the day passed by, she attended her classes, thinking about Rei occasionally but writing notes already. Lunch came around, Ai-Bo was a little late since her friends brought her to the bathroom to gossip. She didn't mind though, she just wanted to see Rei. Once she got to the lunchroom, he still wasn't there. She just sighed to herself. Maybe if she had a class with him, she could talk to him. If not, she can talk to him when they get home since they live next door! That was something she could look forward to.

When school finished, Rei puts his headphones back on and started his music. He didn't want anyone to talk to him, he didn't even want to bother listening to them. Especially a certain someone. He packs up his things and then stands up and turns up his volume, even though they try to shout at him, he won't even hear them. He walks out of the classroom without even bothering anyone and when he was near the school gate he just prayed that someone won't be following him.

Once school was over, Ai-Bo had waved off her friends and started walking home. School was about fifteen minutes away so it wasn't too far of a walk. Unless it was winter time, then it was brutal. As she was starting to walk back, she noticed the tall figure putting in his head phones. She quickly ran over to him and patted his back. "Hey! Where were you? I was looking for you since I didn't want you to get in trouble." She said.

Rei continued walking until he felt someone pat his back. He turned around and sees Ai-Bo. He turns his music down but doesn't take his headphones off. "I was in school for your in for information. And anyway, why are you so persistent into talking with me? Don't you have like some boyfriend or some friends to hangout with?" he said and continues to walk. But this time, he was walking faster so she wouldn't keep up. 'Okay Rei... don't go ballistic whenever you see her.. just try to stay calm...' he thought.

Ai-Bo was trying to keep up with him by skipping. "My friends are going home and I don't have a boyfriend. I'm not persistent in talking to you! I just wanted to talk since we haven't in forever. I'm grateful we live close so I have time to talk to you now. But, I was only looking for you because I didn't want you to get in trouble, you weren't at the rally so that's why." She said, still skipping to walk by him.

Rei let's out a sigh 'I forgot, we're neighbors....' he thought while walking. "Well if its talking, I'm not entirely interested.." he told him before stopping to a red light as he noticed her still skipping along and already passed him. "Hey the light is red." he said, a bit annoyed and grabs her arms and pulls her next to him before cars started to pass by. "Are you a kid or something, you have to be careful when crossing the streets, idiot." he said sounding annoying but at the same time he was just telling her to be careful.

Ai-Bo was caught off guard when he pulled her back. "O-Oh! Sorry about that, didn't even realize. Thanks Rei." She let out a small smile. "Anyway, talking isn't bad. I'm not doing anything bad." She said. "What classes are you taking? I think we are in a class together." She said, feeling a bit excited. It would be nice to connect with Rei again.

Rei lets out sigh. "And why would I even want to tell you my schedule..." he told as he waits for the light to turn green from the stoplight. "And anyway... I got some more important stuff to deal with rather than talk." he sai and sees the light turn green again for the pedestrians. And he starts walking "If you still have time, why not do something else other than talking to me, yeah, I think that's a great idea." he told her in a monotone voice.
