Welcome to the future, year 2080, March 21st, a Friday, 9:30 PM.
It’s a new dawn where we are constantly on the edge of tomorrow everyday. Metropletic cities towering with eclectic numbers of gleaming corporate skyscrapers shadow over over-populated and slum-infested mega-buildings where entire towns prosper in. Every corner of the city is covered in a swath of adverts and holo-boards perpuating corporate products and buying trends. People are now unable to differentiate between the cold hard flaws of reality and the immaterial seductive realm of virtual simulations. Metal and flesh have fused together to create a lifestyle where one depends on cybernetics to AMPLIFY their future whilst the secrets of the flesh are slowly being pried open to reveal their secrets. There’s always a desire to buy more , more cyber-amps, more corp-tech, more fashion, more entertainment, more of the future that people are hooked on right now. The future isn’t something shared equally anymore. The future’s being produced, wrapped, packaged and sold by corporations.
While everyone tries to drown themselves in hedonistic consumerism, it doesn’t take a genius to recognise that the foundations of this seeming utopia (or is it dystopia?) are rotten to the core. Crowds of people ignore the beggars, the lepers, the homeless and the hungry who nest in alleyways. Drugs are rife among a population and when you add no gun regulations to the mixture, well, it’s no wonder that shootings happen by the second. Corporations wage back-door wars with one another using mercs as proxies and make deals with criminal organisations (technically illegal but there’s no one to enforce any rules.)
The future was once a symbol of progression to humanity and a constant reminder that despite of all our failures, we were on the cusp of achieving something greater. All of us were in awe of what was to come. Now? People are left wondering whether or not humanity still deserves a chance at a future.
Welcome to an imperfect future. Remember that light still casts a shadow.
The future is dominated by one word. Corporatocracy. Once you know the meaning of that word, it’s easy to see how this all happened. The first documented case of corporatocracy occured in 1660 when the British East India Company completely controlled the subcontinent of India and held power onto it for several decades, pilfering the country for their own gains, toppling the national government and accruing massive amounts of wealth to fill their own coffers. It was only through intervention and chance that the attempt collapsed but it was a sign of things to come.
3 centuries later is where we begin our story, during the aftermath of World War 2 and the inception of the Cold War between the two superpowers of the block, the USA and the Soviet Union. The world was still picking up the slack from the war and several countries in the European and Pacific theatre had been devastated. Capitalism and communism were rubbing against one another with friction and with the arrival of the nuclear bomb, everyone knew that ensuing armageddon was humanity’s future. Fortunately (or is it unfortunately?), the ancestors of 21st century corporations such as Arma-Tech and Shell Inc began to recognise what the threat of MAD could mean to their profit gains (and of course, humanity in general). Before the USA or the Soviet Union could meaningfully subsume these war-impoverished countries under their control, eastern and western corporations, some individually, others in tandem or in cooperation, began taking advantage of these impoverished and war-damaged countries, offering to privatize their peace and security at the cost of their national sovereignity and governmental oversight.
They accepted the offer.
Within the course of a few decades, corporations became the new leaders of the world and slowly rooted their way into both the Soviet Union and the USA. The international community and the people began subconciously and conciously associating corporations as paragons of progress and moral goodness. Corporations began the slow process of rebranding themselves, merging with other corporates to consolidate their stocks and casting away the more immoral parts of their history in favour of strengthening public relations. They began investing heavily in mass public work projects such as the development of renewable energy, biodegradable plastics and super-conductors for public use, portraying themselves as innovators and the saviours of mankind in a world where the two most largest superpowers traded blows with each other. Futuristic conurbations owned by corporations known as free-trade zones were erected as a vision of the grand future to come, the most famous of these cities being Night City.
The matters of the Cold War didn’t help much as the USA and the Soviet Union continued to duke out the battle of communism v capitalism. Countries that became the battle-grounds for their conflicts soon fell under the control of corporations, like vultures who feasted on the remains of carrion that lions left behind. Cuba, Vietnam, Korea, all of them soon became free-trade zones. The world economy was soon becoming irreversibly tied to corporations and soon, the USA and the Soviet Union were at a tipping point. With the amount of accidental nuclear exchanges, people's faith in these institutions were soon eroded to the point of fragility.
Meanwhile, the mass public work projects was growing into a large success. People were flocking in droves to free trade zones and were buying more corporate products than ever before. When the USA suffered stock market collapses and governments all over the world began to suffer a similar fate, the corporations began seizing their chance. After gaining the favour of the public majority and the people, the corporations began plying their popularity for the chance to ‘legally’ reign over the world. Corporate-owned education programmes dissaude the term from being used in school but most people know it as the Ousting of 2010. It was a scheme that couldn’t possibly fail. Corporate-owned politicians and senators began running for office to pass new legislation, puppetered by the whims and wishes of their corporate masters. As people lobbied and rioted for pro-corporate laws such as allowing corporations to buy areas of land away from governments and oversee its development with their own forces or allowing corporations veto power in passing new legislation, governments all over the world soon fell prey to a new global hegemony of corporations. The United Nations was soon disbanded in favour of a global corporatocracy.
A new world order arrived in the 21st century. The privatization of education, the police force, energy, the internet, legislative measures and effectively all government resources resulted in a hegemony of corporations ruling over the world where only the mightiest and biggest corporations survived lest they feared becoming subsidiaries. Your education-programmes were approved by corporations. Corporations replaced courts of law. Corporations soon began issuing their own security forces as police forces. Your house was owned by the corporations. You weren’t a citizen of a country anymore; you were technically a corporate employee.
Without government regulatory measures nor the fear of any legal retribution, technology advancement skyrocketed at the cost of moral degeneration and at the cost of the environment as well. Mechanical and biological augmentations became the norm of the post-21st Century, otherwise known as Amps. It's estimated that nearly 80% of Earth's population is fully amped in the year 2080. Gene editing became easy as playing with a pile of LEGO bricks. Robotics. Virtual Reality. Synthetic energy. Electromagnetic weaponry. Automated technology. Bio-dermal chips. The corporations hold all the power in how the future proceeds and whether or not people deserve the future or not.
Of course, there were a few minor international controversies that threatened to destroy the craftily created power that these corporations had created for themselves. Whilst profit margins had soared and business had expanded, natural resources dwindled, biodiversity decreased due to overfishing and urban growth and pollution was at a all time high. Corporations signed new legislation for the reduction of pollutants and the protection and cloning of near-extinct plants and animal species out of fear of retribution from the local populace. The largest event is of course known as the “Shadow-War”, named due to its inability to be reported on, where corporates waged war with each other for ownership of the last remaining tracts of land in undeveloped countries such as Africa and South-East Asia. The use of private military corporations and mercenaries flourished in this era.
Lovely, isn't it?
Technology
It's a high-tech/low-life landscape where technology has seeped into almost every facet of life from vehicles being magnitude of times faster than before and high-capacity batteries. It's a anachronistic land where cyberized gangsters are armed with high-voltage flechette spitters while corporate CEOs wear analogue watches meticulously crafted from the last remaining forests of ebony wood. Low-cost mag-lev light rails run across the city on clockwork while high-profile corporate employees fly around in jet-propelled air vehicles, hovering just above the heads of citizens. Automation has permeated every facet of life from restaurants, to checking your accounts, to the operation of mass-supermarkets and even automated transport (Although, consumer vehicles have reached a peak in sales since 2075 ever since congress passed a law to limit the amount of self-driving vehicles, justifying it due to the "threat of hacking".) Yet, technology still exists in a stratified hierarchy with mega-corporations getting the lion's share of advanced tech and distributing "obsolete" tech to the public as a means of planned obsolescence. However, custom-ware and stolen corpo-tech still floods the black-market from the efforts of net-runners, ambitious fixers and needy edge-runners.
The field of killing people has increased in its boundless creativity, from simple mono-molecular blades that vibrate with a button, smart-guns with bullets that track the target upon leaving the barrel, electromagnetic powered rifles that fire projectiles at hypersonic speeds, portable MANPADS that can down a AV within seconds, experimental photonic lasers and sonic grenades capable of vaporising a store front. In the fields of South-East Asia and Africa, Mechanical exoskeletons and suits simply wreak havoc in personal combat, armed to the teeth with a blitzing arsenal of weapons that would make a gun-nut blush. Simply put, if you've thought of something, a sadist in the RnD of Militech is probably going to come up with a solution to satisfy that killing boner of yours.
Cybernetic modification has reached near the edge of the singularity. The first 'amp' (short-hand for amplification and a general positive term for any bodily modification) that everyone usually receives when they are born right out of the womb is a dermal info-chip that displays all of the current biological information of your body. Neural-amps to increase the capabilities of your brain or allow you to act as a grid-fi modem. Physio-amps that consist of titanium-alloyed endo-skeletons to strengthen your body. Tech-amps that allow you to sheathe claws or breathe flames. The possibilities are endless for cyber-amps. Some cyber-amplified go to extremes such as converting nearly all of their body into one cyber-organism or implanting their organs into vehicles. Meanwhile, genetic modification otherwise known as wet-amplification has removed the need and worry for disease entirely (although, the cure for cancer and AIDS is restricted heavily by corporations and can only be obtainable on the black market). Extra secondary hearts. Acidic saliva. Gills. Some corporations are considering resurrecting extinct species of the past. The advent and populariation of cyber-amps and wet-amps has led to a slow death in early fear-mongering attitudes about the loss of the 'soul' . Yet, there is a heavy cost with evidence that shows (claimed to be mere tripe and articles with no scientific basis by corporations) that excessive amplification of the body leads to psychological dissociation in individuals; particularly in individuals who have been known to replace massive amounts of their body with cyber-amps or genetically modify themselves beyond human capabilities otherwise known as morpsychos.
The internet has been privatized and transformed into a stream-lined high-speed interconnected global network known as the Grid. The Grid allows users to interface and manipulate the very essence of code itself in ways that are just unimaginable. Experienced users and hackers of the Grid are known as "surfers", able to pry into any corporate secrets and create programs capable of the impossible such as shutting down an entire power network or hacking into the cyber-amps of another user. The Grid is another universe entirely; not just another metaphor, but a reality that people can literally experience with the use of VR holo-sets, immersive body suits, grid interfaces and 4-dimensional movement rigs.
Culture
Mid-century culture is characterized by a relentless obsession with vapid materialism of both commercialism products and the body and having a good time. The night-life of 2080 is a seductive chaotic rickshaw of the high life with over-speeding tricked out custom vehicles to dancing to Sliverhand's latest techno tunes. The culture of the future has become subsumed by corporations and laps at their heels like a good dog. Amps are treated as items on a shopping catalogue with everyone moving to buy the newest product. Most civil conflicts now consist of debating and arguing over the merits of corporate brands and the outcomes of vapid entertainment shows. In the future, you focus on being the future. You dance and party at newly built corporate techno-clubs. You amp yourself up with the latest hits from Bionic-O or from Biotechnica. You grab technology by the throat and keep it there of your own volition. Corporate-sanctioned "pharmaceuticals" flood the streets as the youth chemically induce themselves to a higher psychoactive state of consciousness from the cruel and harsh dystopic realities of life. The Grid and reality have mixed together in people's minds irreversibly and most can't escape from the otherworldly pleasures of the Grid, becoming severely limited in their capabilities to socialize normally.
However, dissatisfaction with the current hierarchy of society still runs high among the slums. The formation of gangs and most importantly, Deviants (performing artists who use their work to sway the public) are the main form of objection of the corporate hegemony and there are still those who reject the capitalistic consumerism that corporations offer them in exchange for their own humanity, instead accepting a sort of apathetic demeanour in the face of a world slowly breaking in front of them.
PARTNER REQUIREMENTS
1) Partners are required to send a writing sample along with a statement in their PM about why they want to join this RP and basic general information.
2) World-Building and Pre-Plotting is essential in this RP. A familiarity with cyberpunk and its works is also welcome.
3) If it's romance, privy to only MxF relationships.
4) Generally looking for partners who are at a mostly advanced level (hate using the word literate because it's so derogatory) and those who write extremely long detailed posts. Remember that quality does not equate to quantity. Try to break my pre-conceived notions of length v quality.
5) Be willing to change yourself.
VISIONS OF A DISTANT FUTURE - the future/plots is constantly changing/arriving soon
1. Rock 'Em, Sock 'Em
In the Free Economic Zone of Neo-Singapore, corporate-sponsored robot fighting was once a "fun" past-time. Robots have advanced in both design and cost of manufacturing, making them ideal for the sport.
However, after gaining sentience, the robots rebelled and the mega-corporations issued a law that prohibited their manufacture. All drones were collected by corporate authorities and disassembled into spare parts.
A number of these robots remain un-accounted for and rewards are issued around the globe for those who can find the last com-bots.......
2. Black-Collar
Night-City, the most crime-infested city of the Free Economic Zone of California, is suffering a series of riotous attacks perpetuated by a coalition of gangs that have united together under one figure-head elusively known as the Bronze Baron.
Corporations such as Akahashi-Corp and Soto Tech have been hiring numerous edge-runners and fixers to hunt down and kill the Bronze Baron.
It has been several months since it was issued.
Since then, the Bronze Baron has become quiet. Unusually quiet. The streets breath a sign of relief while the heads of corporations frown deeply in their high-glassed offices.
Something is up.
Someone needs to find out.
3. Third Law
In 2018, during the outbreak of the first Corpo-Wars, Vitruvius Enterprises were the pioneers of the world's first cryogenic technology. The founder of the technology, seeing the devastation caused by the massive rampant onset urbanisation that corporations caused, forcefully kidnapped and stored citizens on ice for years.
Vitruvius Enterprises was then subsumed by Biotechnica as one of its periphery companies and was changed to Vitrision Industries. The cryo-market was shut down but the bodies are still stored in underground labs, away from the eyes of the public, living relics while the world around them changed.
Just this morning, Bio-Technica suffered a major break-in
Just this morning, a secret facility off the coast of Baja was infiltrated by a team of cyber-psychos.
Just this morning, one of these pods have been opened.....

Huh, that's strange. Why the hell is my.......
