Broken to Last

Jayden sat in the same coffee in and day out, chasing the previous night's hangover. This one was particularly nasty, as he rested his forehead against his iced coffee cup. His eyes searched the crowds as they all went about their morning routines. He found himself to be a bit annoyed by their smiling faces, and their eternal optimism as he desperately clung to his own sour disposition. He sat back swiping through his phone searching for some reason to actually have a decent day. Taking a quick sip from his cup he fished into his leather jacket's inner pocket pulling out his silver flask pouring his morning shot into it.

He stood up not taking his eyes off his phone, blindly making his way towards the door. His head swimming in thoughts of his past mistakes and how 11 am was far to early to be awake and sober.

Winter was walking down the street listening to music, today was her day off and she was trying her best to enjoy it. Her mother had called her earlier that morning and told her in her new portfolio shots her waist was "quite large" and needed to be worked on.

Winter sighed turning into a coffee shop with her head down bumping into some guy "Oh shit! I'm so sorry" she adjusted her hoodie as she spoke.

His phone spun out of his hand crashing against the marble floor, Rolling his eyes he knelt down to get it "Great,Thanks." he muttered as he picked up still having not looking at her. As he stood back up he finally got a glimpse at this girl , he staggered back a his breath hitching in his chest. "Are you alright?" he asked. He absent-mindedly studied her face, her features it was the photographer in him.

"I should have been watching-"He began "I'm Jayden" he said softly

Winter giggled lightly as the boy introduced himself "Hey, I'm Winter" she held out her hand for a shake something she had been trained to do. In this moment, she had a couple seconds to look at Jayden's face she blushed lightly with the realization of how attractive he was.

Dee was gonna love to hear this later.

He smiled delighted at how her giggle made him almost forget how much he needed a drink, emphasis on almost. "Nice to meet you winter" He said. His hand sliding into hers gripping lightly "Can I get you a coffee, I mean it's only fair" He said. Leaning back on his heels he thought he might have held onto her hand a bit longer than he should have. He half turned his body inviting her to follow him .

Winter smiled at him and nodded "Ok yea, sure" she walked past him into the coffee shop quickly pulling her hair into a bun. When he held her hand Winter felt a little spark. It was probably nothing, just static she thought.

He stepped up to the counter biting his lip as he stared up at the list of Mocha choaca blah blahs. He finally let his hazel eye's settle on her, the light catching them "So what can I get you?" he asked trying to ignore the continuous buzzing in his inner jacket pocket. He had to pick up Alexis in an hour, but right now he was locked in this moment.

Winter glanced up at him and then quickly looked away a blush gaining on her cheeks. "Just a coffee with skim milk... actually just black coffee" she quickly analyzed the calories and changed her choice. She was hoping he wouldn't notice cause he was a cute guy and she didn't want to come off as crazy.

He smiled as he turned to the Barista "Can I get a black coffee, and a..." he scanned the menu really quckly "Banana nut muffin" He said. He pulled out his wallet sliding a twenty across the counter "Split a Muffin with me?" he said over his shoulder hoping to prolong the encounter.

Winter smiled nervously "Sure" she adjusted her hoodie yet again. She was hoping to keep this encounter going as long as possible. "So Jayden, are you like in school or are you working?"

The Barista handed him a brown paper bag and a coffee, he turned to her handing her the coffee. "Actually I work, I am a photographer." He left out the part about being a full-time alcoholic. walking over to a nearby table he pulled out a chair for her before sitting in his own. "What about you? What do you do?" he asked

Winter nodded in thanks and took a sip of her coffee. "Photographer? That's so cool!" she sat down her smile remaining on her lips "Well I'm a business student but I teach dance and am hoping to get a professional dance contract soon"

Leaning forward removing his jacket placing it on the back of his chair. "A dancer eh?" He said a smirk dancing upon his lips he opened the the paper bag pulling out his muffin cutting it in half. "What kind of dance do you do?" he asked as he slid half of the muffin across the table.

Winter glanced down at the half muffin being pushed towards her but chose to ignore it a take a sip of her coffee. "Well I teach all types but I dance break dancing and ballet mostly" it was wierd for her to just be so ok with talking to someone she just met, but he made her feel comfortable. "So, how long have you been a photographer?"

He sat back n his chair crossing his legs never breaking eye contact "I started back when I was 12, but professionally since I was 21" he said. He noticed she wasn't eating but thought better than to point it out. "Has anyone ever told you, you have a face for modeling" he said his voice an octave above a whisper.

A blush quickly gained on her cheeks as he told her about modelling "really? I don't think I'm quite pretty enough to model" her blue eyes disconnected with his as she spoke glancing down at the table.

He sat forward running his finger along the table top, tilting his head as he tried to get a glimpse at those eyes. "I beg to differ" He said. He reached into hs jacket pocket pulling out a business card sliding it across the table. "Why dont you let me show you" He said taking a sip from his coffee cup. "I can do a few shots for you, on the house of course." His phone buzzing again sliding it from his pocket, if he was going to pick up his niece he would have to leave soon.

Winter nodding and picked up the card studying it for a moment. "Yea ok" she glanced back up at him and gave him a smile "in exchange" she grabbed a napkin and took a pen out of her bag quickly writing her number on it and placing it on the table in front of him "you should text or call me sometime"

He grinned taking the number sliding the napkin in his pocket "I certainly will" he said standing up straightening up his jacket. "I'm afraid I gotta run, but I would like it if you would join me for a proper drink tonight if you aren't busy." he said. His phone successfully silenced in the folds of his inner jacket pocket "Please say yes" he said with a boyhood smile.

Winter laughed lightly "I'd love to" she stood up and adjusted her hoodie "I'll see you tonight Jayden" she picked up her coffee and left the small coffee shop beginning her walk home

Julian pulled up to the bar, his Chevy laid to rest as he turned it off. He reached in his pocket pulling out a small container, tilting it letting a small trail of cocaine spread across his dashboard. Taking a quick bump, his heart slammed in his chest. He stepped out of the car making his way inside, his eyes scanning the room.

Winter sat at the bar a beer in her hand. She had told her roommate about the encounter and her friend did her up curling er hair and doing her makeup. The dress scraped against the cuts on Winters thighs and the heels hurt a bit. A random guy sat next to her and said "Hey sexy this seat taken?" he laid a hand on her lower back and Winter panicked slightly

"Leave me alone please" the man did not listen and proceeded to wrap his arm around her waist
