SPACE OVER UEG COLONY WORLD REUNION

OCTOBER 6, 2846

0900 HOURS (INTERNAL CLOCK)

In the space over a warn-torn planet with fires raging down below, the black void seemed to rip open to a swirling portal of blue and gold, and the Property Damage sped through. The portal then closed behind it as the ship made its way down to the planet surface. The ship was a rather small Colorado-class heavy frigate, being just a little over five hundred metres in length. But even then the ship bristled with weapon emplacements, and its massive forward-facing gun pointed towards the planet. The enemy ships were all on the other side of the rocky planet, giving it an opportunity to slip through and reinforce the men fighting down there.

It had been three years since First Contact, the Battle of Cascade, and subsequent start of the Vaskran War. The Vaskrans are a species of sentient bipedal reptilians, each one standing at around seven feet, with a defining feature being their six eyes on their head. They had formed an empire centuries ago and spread to the stars, much like how humanity formed the United Earth Government. Humanity and the Vaskrans never knew of each other's existence until a human mining ship accidentally jumps out of hyperspace in Vaskran territory. The aliens attacked the craft and boarded, finding several seismic charges used for mining. The Vaskrans mistook those as weapons and intruded into UEG space, over the planet Cascade.

Upon encountering humanity's warships guarding the colony, the alien ships opened fire. That move was unacceptable. While humanity's military wing, the United Earth Government Naval Command was able to drive of the aliens with the help of the heroic Special Operations and Combat Team Anvil, it came at the cost of thousands of civilian lives and entire cities, not to mention the countless military personnel lost in the ensuring battle. What was a fight for a single colony erupted into full-scale war with the Vaskrans.

And now it comes to you, quietly staring out one of the windows of the Property Damage, reflecting on this. The war, the Vaskrans, everything. You sigh, and stare down at the reflection of your face on the visor of your helmet, tucking it by your side.

"Hey, man." A voice interrupts you. You turn, and you se a man wearing a set of powered armour much like yours. It was standard issue, after all. His helmet was off, showing his messy brown hair and green eyes. You've never seen him before, but you know he's one of the men in the 262nd General Infantry Combat Unit, just like you are. You nod in greeting before he asks you a simple question. "You got a name?"

You nod. "Yeah. I'm..."

[3] Heat

"...Heat." You feel the word for a second. You've only had that callsign for a while, being a mere Private and all. "Yeah. That's my name." The man who asked you the question gave a small smile and spoke. "Nice to meet you, mate." He says, his strong Australian accent showing. The insignia of a Private is painted onto his shoulderpad, the same rank as you. "I'm William Turf, but just call be Turf." You nod and return the smile, when suddenly a series of alarms ring out.

"ALL MARINES TO DROPSHIPS. WE ARE HEADING PLANETSIDE. REPEAT, WE ARE HEADING PLANETSIDE." A voice says over the intercom as you turn to Turf, other Marines rushing behind you. "Well, I guess this is it. Our first deployment." A hint of fear shows in his eyes for a second as his smile falters, before resuming. He nods and slips on his helmet. "Yep, mate, this is it!"

The two of you rush for the armoury, Turf grabbing his ACAR-38 assault rifle. He inserts a magazine into it, before cocking it and powering up the coil propulsion systems while keeping the safeties on. You, meanwhile, grab your

[3] M453 Squad Automatic Weapon

[4] AUTS-29 Automatic Utility Tactical Shotgun

Oh man, it's difficult to pick one gun type when they're pretty good. A shotgun's too close quarters for a soldier, however, and a squad automatic weapon isn't the best for accuracy, wastes ammo and is heavier then most other gun types. A battle rifle and an assault rifle are both good choices, but a battle rifle tends to be the better all around choice over an assault rifle.

2, the BXR-12 Battle Rifle.

[2] BXR-12 Battle Rifle

You retrieve your treasured rifle from the rack and insert a magazine of twenty 8.41x63mm armour-penetrating rounds and power it on. Just then, someone grabs your shoulder. You turn around and see the smiling face of one of your squadmates, Jason Parker. You met him during Basic Training, and had enough luck to be put together on the same team. He seemed nice enough. "Heat, man! Our first battle! We're finally gonna see some action!" He seemed a little too excited as he picks up his ACAR-38. "Finally get to pop some rounds into the skulls of those damn lizards."

You shrug, slipping your helmet back on. "Yeah. Can't wait." You say as you exit the area and meet up with the rest of your squad in the Property Damage's hangar bay. A multitude of other Marines were already there, moving into DTT-143 Vulture dropships as they took off and headed planetside. Your sergeant is there, and he's already barking orders. "Squad! Listen up!" Sergeant Ramsay says as he hefts his M453 into the air. "When we land, we're gonna kick some ass and chew bubblegum! We're gonna kill those damn aliens! Now let's move!"

Your squad, Kilo One, rushes into the troop compartment of the Vulture, lit by several ceiling lights. Its boarding ramp closes and you feel the dull thump and shake as it lifts off and exits the hangar along with a dozen others. As you enter the planet's atmosphere, the craft begins to shake even more. Atmospheric entry was never smooth. You look out the craft's window, back at the Property Damage, and notice that it was already sending drop pods hurtling towards the planet. Each pod held four Marines each, and while it was conventional, only the more experienced units got to use it. It was riskier too, anyway.

As the squadron of Vultures nears one of the planet's ruined cities, one dropship immediately takes direct hit from a bright red beam and bursts into flames. The beams start to fill the sky as the Vultures take evasive manoeuvres, banking and diving. Your squad is shaken about in the craft's interior. The Vaskrans knew you were coming. You look back out as a flight of AF-23 Warhawks streak by, launching missiles at enemy AA emplacements. Another dropship is hit and explodes, and you see several dead and living Marines fly out of the fireball.

Thankfully, your squad safely makes it down and the Vulture hovers a few feet off the ground. Its ramp lowers as your sergeant orders you to get out. "Go, go, go!" You do so, and rush out as more dropships land. The Vulture takes to the air and narrowly misses a beam. You take a deep breath as you recall your objectives.

[1] Rescue trapped civilians

[2] Secure and retrieve classified material

[3] Take out AA emplacements

[4] Kill enemy commander

3, taking out the anti-aircraft will make it easier for reinforcements to arrive safely. You could argue the commander should be the target, but he doesn't matter if the AA batteries don't go down.

3. @GreenBirdie seems to know war pretty well.

:D

I won't confirm or deny this statement. Also, a commander wouldn't be close to the battle if he has the technology to be able to stay far away while relaying commands, so Heat would have a long way to go before he found the commander. Unless the enemy is known to have less intelligence, then maybe he would be, but if that's the case then the commander probably isn't worth killing.

[3] Take out AA emplacements

Yeah, that's right. Take out every single AA emplacement in this city. That's your objective, even though this city is pretty damn huge, with a population of just under five hundred thousand before the Vaskrans invaded. Luckily, that was only a few hours ago, and the aliens have only managed to deploy hastily set up defences, so you estimate maybe nine or ten AA guns, maybe more.

The rumble of a DVT-102 Manticore Vehicle Transport dawns overhead, and the craft swoops down with a RT413 Dragoon Battle Tank magnetically attached to its underside. Hovering a few metres off the ground, its magnetic clamps disengage, and the 78-ton vehicle drops to the ground with a dull thump. That done, the Manticore flies off to retrieve and deliver more vehicle. The Dragoon, meanwhile, comes to life as it rolls into battle.

You watch this spectacle with great interest, before a trio of bright orange beams penetrates one of your squadmates. "Shit! Get to cover!" Sergeant Ramsay bellows as Kilo One dives behind whatever form of cover they could find. You instinctively take cover behind the tank, and watch as more beams appear, followed by the whizzing of plasma bolts. The Dragoon's turret shifts and rotates, then a massive boom erupts from it as a 157mm shell is launched from its railgun at hypersonic speeds, the projectile leaving a trail of bright blue as it literally rips the air around it so hard it creates a stream of plasma.

The shell smashes into the location where the bolts were coming from: the third storey of a burnt-out office building. The sheer kinetic energy in the projectile causes the surface to explode into a million fragments and sends some ruined structuring falling to the ground. Its target destroyed, the Dragoon lazily rolls forwards. You poke your head out and zoom in with your helmet's magnification feature and see them: the Vaskrans. They match the description, tall, scaly, angry, with six reptilian eyes each. The ones in front make a frantic attempt to return fire with their energy weapons, before they are vaporised by the Dragoon.

You are about to move, when you hear the crying of a girl in what seems like a room to your left. The door seems to have been locked tight, with just a few burn marks here and there. Cautiously, your move towards it, ignoring the rapid gunfire of your squadmates firing their respective coilguns. However, you are conflicted. Your objectives were to destroy AA guns, not to rescue civilians. That was for the other guys. Besides, your sergeant might give you a tongue lashing you'd never forget, but come on, it's the right thing to do even in times of war.

What do you do?

[1] Decide to rescue the girl

[2] The mission's more important
