  MXC, a new collaborative all-boy Korean band, are set to debut with an international tour just at their fingertips. Their company, Vision Management, have put blood, sweat, tears and a large sum of finances to ensure a profitable single and album release. They even hand-picked a team to ensure their journey to success and prosperity!
  
  What the company doesn’t know are the dark secrets lurking in the background.

  An idol too scared to move on to his following stages of life in the military. A leader who has a wandering eye for their manager. Not to mention the ongoing blackmail is just so delicious. As the one who got The Newbie the job, they can play the girl like a puppet whenever they please.   This roleplay is an old plot line I had tried to kick off back when I first joined RPN. It was the first group I had ever tried to GM, but have since learnt a lot since then! Joining me in co-gming this roleplay is one of the original writers from the first group ~ neon reverie ! I'm super excited to have her join me once more through this roleplay!
  
  To summarise it all up, this roleplay is about a collaborative k-pop group (think SuperM) and their journey together with their team. Each character has their own deep, dark secret that could make or break their reputation, and could potentially bring the company to shambles. Through this roleplay, we'll be looking at some dark themes, including the ins and outs of Korean media and entertainment companies.
  
  For your character sheets, you can make them as simple or as complex as you please. All we ask if that you must include how your character came to their position and any information that connects to the character role. Apart from that, you are free to include what ever you want in your cs!

  About Jae:

  Jae is often praised for his creativity , as he’s always looking for opportunities to express himself through his music and to think outside of the box. He is passionate about his work and craves a sense of purpose in life. Rather than running on autopilot or sticking to the status quo, he strives to chase after his dreams and ambitions. Due to this reluctance, Jae struggles to ask for any form of help, and inadvertently holds himself back, creating distances in relationships.
  

  The Secret

  
  At the age of fifteen, Young-Jae had fallen in love for the first time.
  
  He didn’t know her name. He didn’t know her age or who her family were. She attended the school thirty minutes down the road as she always was dressed in the school’s uniform. She hopped onto his school bus every afternoon at three forty-six at the stop right in front of the convenience store and sat on the right side of the bus; the fifth row back, window seat, staring out to the passing world. For over six months, he sat from afar and just gazed at her. Wondering what her life must’ve been like and compiling of all the words that he wished he had the courage to ask her.
  
  One afternoon, the bus didn’t come. There had been a mass car pile-up, leaving the roads blocked with no vehicle able to pass through. Young-Jae opted to walk home, taking the same path the bus took. Along the way, he found himself pausing in front of that very special convenience store. There she stood, confused and unaware that the bus she was waiting for was never coming. It took him a grand total of three minutes and fifty-two seconds to muster up any sort of spirit or courage to walk up to her. Stuttering over his words, his face on fire, he informed her in a mess of a sentence that the buses were cancelled because of the crash.
  
  And by some grace of God, she turned to him and asked if he could walk her home.
  
  Walking back to her house, she revealed that there were a lot of shady men that lived nearby, and she was always too scared to walk past by herself. She lived with her Aunt, who often slept during the day and worked at night time, so she didn’t want to bother her with her worries. It was the reason why she decided to walk to that very bus stop, even though it was a twenty-minute walk after school, and to take the very bus that he took every day. All so she could be dropped off somewhere that didn’t require her to walk in front of those very houses where those men dwelled.
  
  And so, what started as an act of kindness started to blossom into a friendship. They sat together on the bus, sharing anything sweet that she may have picked up at the store, and Young-Jae would walk her back to her house to make sure she was safe. They began to spend their weekends together and, finally, progressed to something. They weren’t dating but found comfort in each other through soft kisses and warm embraces. Which started off innocent enough. But as the seasons passed and the new year rolled by, he found himself being challenged by her. First, it had been taking up on her offer of smoking his first cigarette. It progressed to stealing small items - primarily sweets and alcohol - from convenience stores. And then, finally, during their drunken weekend explorations, they would find the comfort they desperately searched for in this world in bed together.
  
  She was his first love, and he was willing to do anything that she wanted or needed.
  
  Until one day, she wasn’t out the front of the store. She didn’t answer her phone, nor did was she home. She was simply gone with no explanation or trace left behind. She had passed through his life like the summer breeze. The sweet salvation to the dry desert he had been stranded in, providing comfort to his aching, sweating body. But only for a few moments. And once she was gone, she was never to be felt again. For four months, there was no contact despite all of his effort to find her. She was nothing but a distant memory, and all he had left was the memory of her touch to cherish.
  
  One day, upon arriving home from school, his parents quickly ushered him into the house without any explanation. There she stood. With her Aunt by her side and a newborn child in her arms. Her child. While the adults spoke, the children stood in silence and listened. Her aunt spat at Young-Jae’s parents, cursing them for ‘raising such a horrible child’ and ‘how could he take the innocence’ of her niece. It was at that moment that the lightbulb finally went off in Young-Jae’s head. The newborn girl that she was holding in her arms wasn’t just her child. It was his child too. Their child.
  
  The reunion wasn’t the way he had always envisioned it going. Instead of wrapping their arms in an embrace, finding their home in each other, words spat by the two wrapped around his neck, suffocating him. The conclusion of it all was that apparently, it wasn’t her fault and, therefore, shouldn’t be punished with the responsibility. She had the best grades in her class, and deserved to go to school. The newborn was dropped into the arms of the father, the mother pausing for a moment as she glared down at Young-Jae as he sat on the family couch. “I hope you’re happy with what you’ve done. You can ruin your life, but I’m not going to let you ruin mine” her words stung, tracing his body like venom.
  
  It was the last time he saw her.
  The last time he heard her voice.
  The last time he felt her warm breeze stinging his skin.
  All that was left of her passing through was the child sleeping in her father's arms.

and it is abroad that she meets her man; a charmer for sure, always giving kind compliments when he can. it was supposed to be unrequited, the one where you learn to let go-- but then there was an invite to dinner and a show. one date turns to many and before you know it, three years have passed and he asks you to marry. the wedding is beautiful and so is the bride; it is true that yin shuang decides to change her name with pride. im seo-eun is who she becomes and who is vows to be; a self-made women with a prestigious degree.

her career begins small, working as an assistant at an entertainment company and doing all. nevertheless, ambition roars and soon enough, there is an opening of doors. seo-eun rises in ranks and gets a promotion; a manager role it is, to prove her devotion. it is through her hard work in managing groups that she becomes more known, and slowly enough, she starts to assemble her own throne.

nevertheless, there is work and then there is life; doesn't everyone know what is to be expected of a wife? a child is what they want and what they get, seo-eun thought of them to be satisfied, but suddenly there are more expectations to be met. tradition runs deep, along with claims that becoming a stay at home mom is what the they need. can't they understand that financial independence is not a selfish greed? arguments turn to heated fights, all shoutings about who is wrong and who is right. in the end, it is her husband who relents, but nothing is the same after this sequence of events.

seo-eun's career might thrive now more than it has even done, but when it comes to passion in their marriage, there is none. still, she can't help but hope for things to go back to where they were before. is it so bad to think he could still love her, even after their war?

  Ki is a little standoffish, more so an examiner of a situation before inserting where he thinks he needs to go - not where he wants to go. He seems dependable when it comes to group projects and knowing when he's allowed to shine. A team player at all times just to keep the peace. A lot of people find him to be boring at first, someone who blends in the crowd if he wasn't groomed to be an idol.

  A LITTLE DEEPER

  Anyone can tell he's dedicated to his craft. He loves music and it's his whole purpose in life. Brethes, eats, sleeps it. His personality shines when he's performing, although his investment in constantly evolving his craft means he never knows when to turn it off. People often distance themselves when they realize how obsessed he is with music. He also listens to "almost anything" and literally forces himself to endure music that just seems weird.
  
  He can be straightforward with his opinions, stating his thoughts out in the open even if he knows there will be judgement. It's not because he doesn't care about the weight of the words he speaks, he just doesn't want to lie about his feelings. Lying just means there's more for him to keep track of.

  Ki likes urban sketching and art journaling. His mother taught him to keep a record of his daily life to look back when he's older, once asking him to show her when she's too old to remember memories on her own. He started being proactive on the journaling after her request. Ki-Hyuk's loyalty to himself comes first but a close second is his family - even his brother that betrayed him the most. He's a little quirky the way he does things but genuine about it all. Ki is someone people wished they were closer too but feels too aloof to every get to that level.

  Ki-Hyuk doesn't entirely cry over his sexuality, keeping the subject the same weight as his secret of eats a pint of Haagen-Dazs at night when he's anxious. Deep inside, it only bothers him when his father brings it up since it usually is tied with his incarcerated brother's shenanigans. The familial betrayal hurts more than Ki's actual sexuality.

  Born in Palo Alto, California to FATHERSNAME and MOTHERSNAME on August 16th, Ki-Hyuk's earliest memory is a family day trip to Great America theme park and crying his eyes out when he couldn't go on the "big kid" rides with his older brothers. He also pinpoints this day as "the day he fell in love with music". After his crying fit and a triple chocolate ice cream cone, his mom let him watch in awe a Beatles tribute band and meet them after their set. The smallest kid muttering, "How do I be as cool as you guys?" and their answer stuck with him the rest of his life, "By Never Giving up on Your Dreams"
  
  

  That year, on his 5th Christmas, his parents had two surprises for their small family of five. Little Ki-Hyuk was gifted his first ever guitar, a little thing that probably sounded like shit, but he loved it anyways. The second gift was far more impactful to his two brothers as FATHERSNAME was offered a well paying job back in South Korea, something he couldn't pass up with being the only person supporting the family financially.
  
  

  So, in 1997, the SURNAME family uprooted their lives to move to CITY, just outside of BIGGERCITY, with FATHERSNAME's childhood home. With Ki-Hyuk, the transition was fairly easy although he did get funny looks from time to time when he would speak English. Overall, Ki-Hyuk was easily the heartthrob of his classes all through elementary school. His American accent would stick with him for all his life.
  
  

  His brothers, Si-u and Jae-sung, were a different story. Si-u was pushed into an entire new high school system and study culture that set him up for failure. By the end of summer, Si-u was sent back to California to live with their aunty in San Diego, for the sake of his mental health. Jae-sung on the other hand was too young to be taken back to the States even if he begged every day for weeks. Instead, Jae-sung earned a reputation of a disobedient child at school, always having detention and causing issues for students, teachers, and eventually, their parents.
  
  

  With Jae-sung misbehaving, their mother put in all her efforts onto making Ki-Hyuk's dreams come true. She firmly believed Jae-sung was a lost cause after his second offense in middle school. FATHERSNAME put his high paying career's networking abilities to work as Ki-Hyuk was signed up for real guitar and singing lessons. Of course, academic tutoring was there too but his parents were fearful. If they didn't appease to Ki-Hyuk's interests enough, he would turn out just like Jae-sung.

  Most of Ki-Hyuk's teen years was spent working on his musical talents. On weekends, Ki-Hyuk would perform covers of Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, and of course The Beatles at a large park in BIGGERCITY. Same spot every week until one day, a woman about 5'4 in Louboutins watched with intrigue. He didn't notice how she recorded him on her phone and by the time his set was over for the day, she was nowhere to be found.
  
  

  The following Monday felt the same as it always was. Ki-Hyuk returned home from high school to pick up his guitar to find the same woman now sitting in their living room with his parents. She introduced herself as NPCNAMELOL and she was part of Visual Management as a recruiter for new talent. She apologized for taking a video of him before telling Ki-Hyuk she showed the video to her supervisor who was impressed by the 13 year old boy's skill and talent. They wanted him to try out to be part of a new group they were working on.
  
  

  It felt like all of Ki-Hyuk's dreams were coming true! His parents were reluctant at first but ultimately, all they wanted was for one of their sons to be happy. Of course, they forced Visual Management to have Ki-Hyuk stay in school instead of opting for home-schooling, being one of the few finicky parents in regards to their children's contracts. FATHERSNAME was no fool about contracts, making sure Ki-Hyuk knew his life was soulbound forever to a contract if he signed away. It didn't matter. Ki-Hyuk wanted to be a singer-songwriter for the rest of his life. He was sure he'll find a way to keep doing what he loved.
  
  

  The rest of Ki-Hyuk's high school experience after being recruited felt the same, just adding in the drive to and from BIGGERCITY every day for training. He was a quiet kid compared to his fellow trainees, always keeping his head down and focused on his best. Most group training sessions tended to be dancing, something he fumbled in most days until practices made him at least follow steps on time. With his schedule different than other trainees, and being one of the younger ones, it was easy for Ki-Hyuk to be overlooked at competition and even a REAL contender for a spot in the group.
  
  

  One day, the producers (?) threw all the candidates up on a stage and told them to perform any song with only an twenty minutes to prepare. Everyone nervous about leaving a good impression with the producers and trying to figure out their setup. Ki-Hyuk? He grabbed a guitar and offered to go first. Nervous? As hell. But Ki-Hyuk knew three things to be true:
  

  1. He'd the more nervous if he had to wait his turn.​

  2. The producers MUST be testing them for courage and stage presence instead of vocal talent.​

  3. He skipped lunch and really wanted to be dismissed early to have a giant bowl of Cap'n Crunch.​

  
  

  So the kid talked up to the mic with a stranger's guitar in hand, pressed his mouth to the mic to get the attention of the producers, and offered to perform for them. A song he already played so many times in his room that drove his older brother crazy from the cracking voice trying to hit the high notes. Cool Cat wasn't too popular of a Queen song in South Korea but Ki-Hyuk looked like a Cool Cat with the guitar playing, the body sway against the mic, and clear eye contact on the female producer. Of course, the vocals of Freddie Mercury overwhelmed Ki-Hyuk's juvenile voice but with a more obscure song choice, comparisons were slim for this lucky promising teen.
  
  

  Soon after, Ki-Hyuk debuted at 15 as an idol for 4TUNE among six other fellow trainees. Their first song "SONGTITLE" was a major success as Ki-Hyuk's career was now on a uphill trajectory. He was one of the two youngest members of BANDNAME and known for his acoustic renditions of their slower songs while he had virtually no say in the songs he would make. Ultimately, his opinions on their music sound deteriorated to becoming a yes man and accepting his role in the group.
  
  

  Adulthood

  
  

  At age 21, Ki-Hyuk's middle brother was arrested in a drug bust, landing him 15 years in prison after multiple offenses against the law. Jae-sung had a lot of time on his hands and agreed to talking to any of Ki-Hyuk's fans who wanted to talk to him. As more and more fans learned this would be a mistake as Jae-sung would pry on their fanhood for his own gain and ultimately insinuate Ki-Hyuk always had "Western values" and lived a "controversial American lifestyle".
  
  

  Eventually, Ki-Hyuk needed to address his older brother's implications and completely denying the rumors his own kin made just because there was resentment between them due to their parents. "I love my brother and I'll always cherish the good memories with him." It was the truth, what Ki-Hyuk and Jae-sung said. Ki-Hyuk was always "different" the way he looked at boys and girls and it didn't help he was now in a innocent romantic relationship... with his fellow band member.
  
  

  Management didn't know about their romance leaning friendship, allowing it to blossom with the fan base slowly turning into a chaos storm about the pair. Before Jae-sung's aid in spreading the "lifestyle" rumor, Ki-Hyuk and his bandmand amiably decided the relationship would end just as innocent as it started. A first love that never turned bittersweet as Ki's first love went to complete his military service with another member of their group.
  
  

  The 4TUNE hiatus continued to be prolonged, stunted by each member's required military service, Ki-Hyuk found himself doing whatever he could to make money while staying faithful to BANDNAME and Vision Management. He's been the face of Samsung phones, male skincare lines, and even a popular hot dog food court company.
  
  

  When Ki-Hyuk was 27, he helped write two songs for upcoming groups and still makes large amounts of royalty from it today. With the money he made in royalties, Ki-hyuk was finally able to fulfill a dream of his: buying a house for his parents to retire in. The mid-century house nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles was perfect for the old couple since they wanted to see their eldest son more often. And to be further away from the shame of the family.
  
  

  A year later, Si-u married his girlfriend of 4 years at Joshua Tree National Park in a beautiful ceremony. Photos of the wedding leaked onto the internet and jump started a new found interest in Ki-Hyuk as the two years of living in LA changed his style drastically. He also is seen taking his girlfriend to this wedding, dispelling "lifestyle" rumors from years ago just by photos of them kissing.
  

  Note: He does finally accept doing a cosmetic surgery on his jaw that does change his facial features to be less "boyish". He's been extremely vocal about his fear of "going under" as well as wanting to "respect" the features his parents gifted him.   go hayoung is six when she thinks she may find family. they aren't particularly well-off and hayoung is older than they would like, but they've tried and tried to conceive and the orphanage promises hayoung is an angel. out of the slums and into the city, she soon finds that someone like her should not be allowed in school; there is shame in being an orphan, shame in her clumsy habits, shame all the more in her temper when she doesn't take it lying down. she lasts six months and thirty bruises before she is unceremoniously returned like a spoilt good.
  
  go hayoung is thirteen when she is forced into a family. she learns quickly it is a dog-eat-dog world, and hayoung decides it smartest to surround herself with tigers than become their prey. someone like her fits in perfectly amongst misfits and young criminals, with cruel smiles and crueller eyes. her youth is a time she would rather not remember, filled with regret and wronged relationships she wishes she could take back. her foster father, a kindly man whose wrinkles deepen each time she runs away from home, wants only the best for her. hayoung thinks this is the best as she may ever see.
  
  go hayoung is nineteen when she leaves her family on the behest of her other. it is his last wish before he leaves for the states for her to "take care of yourself." it is the remorse and the stricken heart; someone like her has no place in society, but against all odds, she becomes someone else. frantic hands weave a new identity, a new name where the only whispers of her past are the summer breeze that lent her its name. she makes use of the last of her connections to get a job as a lowly production assistant— it's not much, but it's honest work.

  Her wardrobe ranged from professional suits to frilly dresses, So-Yeong expressed herself through her clothes and it was her passion. The clothes were often her own way to reward herself and she probably had more than what she needed. Some undersized clothes or ones that never considered wearing anymore also remained in her hoard of outfits, never liking to throw stuff away as a result of growing up poorer than most.

  A deceiver, insensitive and power-hungry, not what So-Yeong as a child thought she would become but now, it seemed to be the best for her. Her materialism and need for control had all culminated in her selling information to fans, maybe even sprinkling in a touch of blackmail. It was a risky choice but one that she enjoyed nonetheless no matter the consequences on others, selfish but an on-brand decision for her. It was a way for her insecurity of not being in control, of not being wanted to be ignored, knowing the safety she possessed with all the information she knew. Despite her less-than-moral activities, no one could deny her enthusiasm and skill in her area of work, career-oriented and independent mixed well with passion and So-yeong’s dedication.
  
  So-Yeong always made an effort to be polite, knowing how much impressions mattered in the long run. However, she was more reclusive than anything else, a bit awkward in certain situations and misreading social cues often. In those rare instances where she gets close to someone, she can be a bit clingy, though still immensely loyal. Though impatient and annoyed at times, she usually hides it or ignores it until it becomes too big of an issue.

  So-Yeong loves expressing her creativity through clothing, matching accessories and outfits together and the area of fashion in general. She enjoys K-pop, hence why she was ecstatic when she first received her invitation to be the stylist for a K-pop Group. She also had a certain liking for power, being in control, and money.

  Dislikes +

  She had always disliked not being in control of things, or not having a say in anything. Travelling in a plane was also an annoyance of hers-she had sea sickness as well as plane sickness and an unexplainable fear of heights didn't help either. To her, it was cramping and tedious, so she never gets on one until she needs to.

  Hobbies +

  Designing outfits was an activity So-Yeong arguably spent the most time on, whether it be for her work or simply out of fun. This was accompanied by drawing, something she was attempting to get better at. She had a sketchbook filled with drawings, getting progressively better towards the end of the book.

  Quirks +

  Oftentimes, she brushes her fingers through her hair when she is nervous as well as biting her fingernails, though So-Yeong is working on stopping that habit. Her handwriting is often unclear/messy, and illegible if she is in a rush.

  EARLY LIFE

  Born to a foreigner and a Korean woman, So-yeong’s life wasn’t exactly gratifying. Born in a low-income family with only her father working as a manual labour where her parents had an unwanted child far too young, barely adults themsleves, she had never known peace. Screaming bouts, swinging fists and unwilling parents, though they tried but sometimes, trying wasn’t enough. It was an unfortunate situation for all parties involved, her parents were not even married yet burdened with So-Yeong. They got engaged though once So-Yeong looked back on it, she had always assumed it was because of duty and responsibility instead of love.
  
  At the age of nine, So-yeong’s father left back to his hometown, pushed to his limits. He didn’t want to be stuck in a loveless marriage with a kid, stuck in an unpromising job. So-yeong’s mother attempted to get back on her feet but without a proper education and a young child, So-Yeong was given away to an orphanage. To her mom’s credit, it was the best decision, but not one that So-Yeong understood at the time. The only thing she knew was that in the span of her year, both of her points of support were ripped away, that no one wanted her anymore.
  Left with the clothes on her back, the bitter memories of her parents and a singular sack of knickknacks she had collected that So-Yeong treasured even in adulthood, she was transported from foster home to foster home. Some she liked, some she didn’t, but none of them kept her for long-the shortest being a couple of weeks, the longest being a year-long stint. Soon, it was too late. Adulthood loomed closer and closer, and she was kicked out of the system. As lost and hopeless as her life had started, but instead of optimism and naivety, it was replaced with materialism and a need for control, something that would’ve saved her from all this misery. However, the fear of never being good enough and not being wanted had always lingered inside of her.
  

  
  
  

  ADULTHOOD

  Having dropped out of school, finding it unfulfilling at the time, especially considering the tumultuous state of her life, So-Yeong was forced to enter work as a cashier at a food chain. Whilst many people would have given up in this situation, she turned her desperation and frustration into ambition, anger only fueling her. Hours consumed by stress, and a tiring nine-to-five job, So-Yeong found solace in fashion and designing outfits. It was her interest, the only thing that would work for her. It was a troublesome career choice but…she made it. Exploiting every opportunity, doing whatever she could even if it wasn’t moral. She started off with online clients for practise and eventually got more attention from bigger companies due to her eye for fashion. She could remember the euphoria and mirth of the day she made it K-pop as a stylist, her passion. Money, influence, she could have it now. However, So-Yeong didn’t exactly walk a straight line now that her life was on track. After all, a tiger didn’t change its stripes.
  
  Selling information to desperate fans of the group she was with, her money amassed, and her control grew. Not to mention, the blackmail she had…for once, she was in control. She had power over others, not just anybody average either, influential, well-known people. Always acutely aware of the risk that was being stripped of her title and job, So-Yeong had always been careful, and meticulous and had never been caught or even questioned. So, once she joined MXC she knew exactly what to do. Her ‘strategy’ had done wonders for her over the years and now with the delicious chance of a newbie to play with and a brand new cast, how could she resist?
