It comes naturally to her, the smiling and small talk and bits of humor sprinkled in for relatability. She has almost an unreal quality, like she might turn around and reveal herself to be just super-advanced AI.
Under the surface, Val is a deeply conflicted person. She enjoys the unexpected; midnight swims, concerts in different cities, the thrill of trying a new restaurant on the other side of town. She loves the thrill of knowing that she is human, not a weird trophy child for her parents to parade. She resents that her life has been laid out for her, but has experienced her mother's wrath first-hand and knows that she has a duty to fulfill. But she longs for something else – anything else, really.

Valentina had expectations on her shoulders before she was even out of the womb. Her father was a rising politician, newly elected alderman and shooting for mayor by 30, and her mother's family were considered pillars of the community for their grand parties and charitable efforts. She was the couple's first child, and unbeknownst to them at the time, the only child they would ever have. There was no room for error.
Growing up, Val only had the best. Toys, clothes, vacations, and education. Though she spent a majority of her time at home with her nannies, she relished the long holidays with her parents in far-off tropical locales and the few functions a year that she was allowed to attend. But as the years went on, the responsibilities got heavier. First was the dance and fencing lessons, then the etiquette lessons and the debutante circuit, then private tutors were brought in to ensure that her grades didn't suffer and she was made to learn piano. Valentina had so many extra-curricular activities by the time she reached high school, friendships were a dream long passed.
At her 20th birthday party, she was introduced to Killian Frey. His father, she was informed, was the financial officer for quite a large private endowment. It would be good for the family, so her mother insisted. Six months later, they were engaged at a party at his family's lake house. Valentina kept up her smile, not only because both of their families were there and she didn't have a choice, but because she tried to convince herself that it was the right move. After all, this was her duty.
