Overview

It’s the year 1308 AE [After Expansion] and by now humanity has populated endless star systems within eight closest galaxies—the rest of them are too far for humans to venture to, whoever did was never seen again.

The traditional political landscape is dominated by the ruthless conflicts between powerful mega-corporations such as Hyperion, Dahl, and Atlas. They operate with near-sovereign authority, waging wars against each other to control resources and assert dominance.

Amidst the corporate warfare, political and religious powers have carved out their own spheres of influence—in certain regions, charismatic leaders and ancient bloodline royalties command loyalty through promises of stability and prosperity. Using faith and heritage to manipulate and rule over their territories.

The Vaults

They are legendary and mysterious structures, allegedly created by the long-extinct Eridian civilization. Humans don’t know much about it but they believe it to be the only sentient alien life form that’s vestiges are buried in our planets, hidden in our galaxies. The stories speak about impossible power and riches buried within the Vaults, sparking fierce competition and conflict among individuals and factions that seek them.

Technology

Innovation is driven by the insatiable greed and cutthroat competition among the mega-corporations. These advances were often born out of necessity and survival among the new and harsh environments of uncharted planets that the corporations invaded in search of new profits. It led to a diverse array of high-tech weaponry, vehicles, and gadgets that defined everyday life.

Weaponry, Shields, and Grenades

Corporations like Jakobs, Maliwan, Torgue, Vladof and others, produce a staggering variety of guns [Pistols, Assault Rifles, SMGs, Sniper Rifles, Rocket Launchers, Revolvers, Lasers]. Each with unique attributes, from explosive Torgue shotguns to elemental Maliwan rifles. Some treat these weapons just as tools but corporate soldiers might see them as symbols of identity. The modular nature of these guns allows for endless customization.

Personal defense is equally advanced, with energy shields providing a direct layer of protection. They come in many forms, offering enhancements such as quick recharges, resistance to elemental damage or explosive retaliation upon depletion. So you don't need a physical armor to be protected.

Grenades, too, feature a range of effects from homing capabilities to elemental bursts, turning them into versatile tools for assault and crowd control.

Transportation

Interplanetary travel is facilitated by various types of spacecrafts. These range from small shuttles used for short distances within a star system, to metropolis-size vessels capable of traversing vast interstellar distances, and anything in between.

There are also smaller, atmospheric crafts used for planetary travel, capable of landing in rough terrain and hostile environments. Various tire- and hover-crafts are available for on-land travel.

Corporations

They shape the political, economic, and social landscapes of various planets, often eclipsing traditional governments. Their primary goal is the relentless pursuit of profit and they often don't shy away from ruthless tactics to dominate markets and secure resources.

Hyperion: Hyperion is known for its high-tech weaponry, precision manufacturing, and oppressive control over planets like Pandora.

Dahl: Dahl Corporation specializes in military-grade weapons and large-scale mining operations, leaving a significant impact on the planets they exploit.

Atlas: Atlas is renowned for its advanced weaponry and exploration endeavors, constantly seeking to reclaim its former glory through innovation and strategic alliances.

Maliwan: Maliwan focuses on elemental weapons that combine cutting-edge technology with corrosive, incendiary, and shock capabilities, making their products both lethal and trendy.

Torgue: Torque is synonymous with explosive firepower and rugged weapon designs, catering to those who value raw destructive power.

Jakobs: Jakobs prides itself on manufacturing traditional, high-damage firearms with a classic, old-fashioned design, favored by those who appreciate raw power and precision, in style.

Vladof: Vladof is known for its rapid-fire weaponry and socialist-themed branding, providing high rates of fire and extended magazine sizes for relentless combat efficiency.

Pandora

Pandora is a remote and desolate planet, far from the central hubs of human civilization. It was initially colonized by various corporations and prospectors seeking to exploit its abundant resources and rumored alien technology. However, the planet's harsh environment and the elusive nature of the hidden treasures led many to abandon their efforts or die in the process.

The prisoners that the corporations brought here for labor in extracting the resources, were cut loose. Desperate and ruthless, they formed bands and factions to survive amidst the planet's hostile conditions. It sparked cutthroat rivalries driven by the eternal pursuit of profit and control and the lack of structured government created a brutal reality where power shifted rapidly and allegiances were as unstable as the deadly wasteland.

Some of the ex-convicts who worked deep in the mines spread rumors about ancient crystals they saw down there. But those men gradually lost their sanity and nobody trusted their stories. Until one day said crystals began to erupt and resurface and the corporate scopes once more zeroed in on this frontier planet.

Your Creations

This setting is so vast that there's room for everybody's imagination! You can create a whole star system or just a small community for the sake of your character's backstory. You can invent gear or even make up a religion. You can even volunteer to lead a group scene and clash our characters with your own faction or hostile environment on Pandora.

I'd say, sky's the limit, but we're well beyond that limit! That said, please make sure to run your ideas by me so I can confirm they're consistent with this more realistic version of Borderlands universe that some of you might already know from the games and the movie. Whenever in doubt, don't be shy and ask!
